Background / History
Bahadun'er was one of the Void God's vassal races and once ravaged the galaxy alongside the Babel Swarm. After the Void God was sealed and the Galactic Alliance hunted its crystals, the collective spent a long period evading encirclement and pursuit. 40 41
It eventually escaped the pursuing fleets and occupied a resource-rich star system, using stellar radiation to produce nutrients and expand its crystal population. Remembering that it had once commanded one hundred billion times more crystals than it possessed then, Bahadun'er focused on rebuilding its strength and seeking revenge against the Galactic Alliance. 41
Appearance
Bahadun'er manifests through vast numbers of meteor-sized crystals. Under starlight, the crystals flicker irregularly at their cores and can form a disk around a star resembling planetary rings. 41
- Its individual Crystal Entities possess highly stable lattice structures. 42
- Their atomic structure is described as comparable in toughness to carbon fiber. 42
- Captured crystals were confined within lightless cavities inside planetary organisms. 43 44
Abilities & Skills
Collective Existence
Bahadun'er is an individual consciousness formed from information converging through a psionic network of countless low-intelligence Crystal Entities. 44
- It commands dispersed Crystal Entities through their shared psionic network. 41 44
- Destroying its currently gathered forces cannot permanently kill it if even one Crystal Entity survives elsewhere. 44
- This decentralized survival mechanism makes it exceptionally difficult to eradicate. 44
Faster-Than-Light Crystal Swarms
Bahadun'er can direct enormous formations of crystals into faster-than-light travel. 41 42
- It ordered its entire crystal force to travel to the Bogu Grand Nebula to destroy the Babel Swarm. 41
- It uses small probing forces before major attacks to assess enemy strength and reduce the risk of encountering a superior force. 42
- It can use destroyed scouting crystals' information to target enemy fleet coordinates. 42
Crystal Physiology
The Crystal Entities use electric current to maintain their vitality. 43
- Their lattice structure resists ordinary chemical reactions, limiting the effectiveness of spore acid and plasma jets. 42
- Their physical structure is highly resilient against ordinary fangs and claws. 42
- Their durability did not protect them against the Babel Swarm's overwhelming planetary-scale psionics. 42 43
Orbital Assault
Bahadun'er employs massed crystal forces in space warfare and planetary attacks. 42
- It bombarded Hathe from orbit after defeating its defending fleet. 42
- It deployed large numbers of crystals onto Hathe's surface with the intent of converting the planet into a crystal planet. 42
- It relies on numerical superiority to compensate for insufficient direct attack power against advanced warships. 42
Relationships
- Void God — Master of Bahadun'er's vassal race; Bahadun'er seeks the Void God's seal and believes only the Void God's leadership can defeat the Galactic Alliance. 40 41
- Babel Swarm — Former fellow servant race. Bahadun'er declared the Swarm traitors after Lu Shang refused to search for the Void God's seal without compensation. 40 41
- Lu Shang — Enemy and captor. Lu Shang imprisoned Bahadun'er's crystallites, interrogated it about other vassal races, and used intimidation to discourage further harassment. 43 45
- Galactic Alliance — Long-standing enemy that pursued and besieged Bahadun'er's crystals after the Void God's defeat. 41
Story Role / Major Arcs
Demand for the Void God's Seal
Bahadun'er contacted the Babel Swarm through the psionic network and invoked the old command structure, ordering it to locate the Void God's seal. It offered no reward, considering obedience to the Void God an unconditional duty. 40 41
Lu Shang rejected the order and mocked Bahadun'er's threat to execute the Swarm for betrayal. Bahadun'er then activated its death-penalty protocol, formally declaring war on the Babel Swarm and moving its crystal forces toward the Bogu Grand Nebula. 40 41
Assault on Hathe
Upon reaching the Bogu Grand Nebula, Bahadun'er detected unexpectedly powerful psionic signatures and cautiously selected Hathe as a target with a comparatively weak signature. It first dispatched a probing force, then committed its main crystal swarm after concluding that the Babel Swarm was using parasitized Galactic Alliance warships. 42
The collective destroyed Hathe's defending fleet and began an orbital assault, but three planetary organisms appeared. Their psionic power immobilized the crystal swarm, exposing Bahadun'er's failure to recognize how far the Babel Swarm had evolved. 42
Capture and Interrogation
The Babel Swarm captured all crystallites in Hati's star system and divided them among three planetary organisms. Bahadun'er was confined in one of these organisms, cut off from all light. 43
Lu Shang later opened its prison to interrogate it about the locations of other Void God vassal races. Bahadun'er refused, maintaining that it would not aid a race it considered traitorous. 44
Deterrence
Lu Shang openly explained that he understood Bahadun'er's decentralized survival mechanism, then warned it to flee before the Babel Swarm became even stronger. The warning was intended less as goodwill than as a means of preventing surviving Crystal Entities from reproducing and harassing the Swarm during its war with the Galactic Alliance. 44 45
Trivia
- Bahadun'er's communication is described as an ancient-radio-like mechanical voice and often uses terse, procedural phrasing such as “Query confirmed” and “Response... refusal.” 40 44
- It initially could not reconcile the Babel Swarm's planetary organisms and overwhelming psionics with its inherited understanding of the species. 42 44
