Background / History

Lu Yu was born in Huainan Prefecture's Shuiqu County as the younger son of the Lu family, one year after his elder brother Lu Chen. Their Daoist uncle accepted both brothers as reserve disciples of the Three Truths Sect while they were still children. 2

As a boy, Lu Yu was bold, restless, and determined to join his father on the northern frontier. He attempted to run away twice; Lu Chen first reported him to their mother, then secretly removed the silver and provisions from his bundle. 2 His stubborn loyalty to Lu Chen later defined his decision to refuse Liu Jinchan's offer of sole discipleship: Liu would have to accept his elder brother as well. 7

At Mount Zhongnan, Lu Yu's aptitude rapidly eclipsed that of the other disciples. He cultivated the Innate Skill, became a first-rate martial artist while still seventeen, and earned widespread admiration within the sect. 7 When war engulfed the north, he descended the mountain with fellow disciples to protect the people and eventually reunited with Lu Chen at Hulao Pass. 7 11

During the northern campaign, Lu Yu served as the Lu Family Army's decisive martial force. He led the assault force against the Iron Pagoda Cavalry, slew more than two thousand enemies in the resulting raid, and later assassinated the suspected traitor Zhao Pu alone. 12 15 16 Though famed for his strength, he consistently deferred to Lu Chen's strategy and judgment. 12 17

After the war, Lu Yu remained at Mount Zhongnan with Lu Chen and Liu Jinchan. He took in seven disciples, most of them orphans of the chaotic era, and shaped them into the Seven Disciples of Zhongnan. 47 60 His repeated journeys through the martial world earned him a fearsome reputation for exterminating demonic cultivators. 59 69

Lu Yu continued to protect Lu Chen through the Spiritual Energy Revival and the political struggles surrounding Great Qing, Yan Territory, and the competing kingdoms. He defeated top Grandmasters, fought the Five Absolutes, and entered the Celestial Realm while remaining apparently youthful and ordinary. 46 86 205 207

In Lu Chen's final campaigns, Lu Yu fought beside him through the struggle for Yan and the battle at Great Deer Pass. He ultimately surpassed the limits of the mortal world, but rejected the Heaven Gate so that Lu Chen would retain an opportunity to ascend. He instead opened a path with his own fist and promised to find his brother again regardless of the heaven or world that separated them. 235

Much later, during a subsequent Celestial Reincarnation, Lu Yu appeared at the ascension grounds after nearly ten thousand years had passed since his original era. He confronted Yu Ke and demanded the Three Truths Dao Tradition and everything belonging to Lu Chen. After Yu Ke permitted him to proceed so that the reincarnation deduction could continue, Lu Yu removed nearly all members of the Three Truths Sect from the ascension grounds, leaving only Lu Beiyou. 805 826

Lu Yu claimed that the heavens beyond ascension contained thirty-three layers and that the Three Truths Lineage had existed there as a powerful sect for tens of thousands of years. He reassured Lu Beiyou that Lu Chen was merely in seclusion, instructed her to call his name after ascending, and recovered a remnant of Lu Chen's Dao Foundation from Mount Zhongnan. 826

He then confronted Imperial Homeland over his schemes against the Three Truths Lineage. Although the Judge's Brush returned the souls of the Three Truths disciples preserved in the Netherworld and pleaded for Imperial Homeland's life, Lu Yu's restraint was attributed to his respect for the Netherworld Emperor. After sparing Imperial Homeland, Lu Yu tore open the boundary between worlds and departed through the void. 826

Lu Yu is bold, direct, and intensely proud of his martial path. As a child, he repeatedly tried to leave home to aid his father; as an adult, he remains eager for worthy opponents and easily grows impatient with evildoers or cowards. 2 69

Beneath that aggression, he retains what Liu Jinchan calls a child's pure heart. He is open in his feelings, irreverent toward status and politics, and capable of mercy even after overwhelming an enemy. His deepest loyalty is reserved for Lu Chen. Lu Yu supports his brother's decisions without condition, follows him into danger without hesitation, and treats threats against Lu Chen as his reverse scale. 33 147 207 This devotion outweighs even his desire for ascension. 235

Despite his overwhelming post-ascension power, Lu Yu remains protective and decisive rather than needlessly destructive. He removes the Three Truths disciples from danger, preserves Lu Chen's legacy, and spares Imperial Homeland when doing so honors the Netherworld Emperor. 826
