Background / History

Yan was an orphan selected by Spirit Hall after awakening the Flame Lord martial soul. He became part of its Golden Generation and received exceptional training and resources, earning a reputation as a Rank 32 Soul Elder by age thirteen 10 36.

When Bibi Dong accepted the six-year-old Yang Jian as a nominal disciple, Yan immediately resented the newcomer’s status. He questioned why Yang Jian deserved recognition from the Pope when he himself had not been accepted as her disciple, then challenged him to a physical sparring match 10.

Yan was initially overwhelmed by Yang Jian’s body-tempering combat instincts and was beaten badly. Although Yang Jian conceded after his stamina failed, Yan tried to retaliate with his Flame Lord martial soul and soul power, violating the terms of their match; Hu Liena and Xie Yue stopped him 11 12.

He later demanded a second duel after Yang Jian obtained his first soul ring. Despite suppressing his strength and limiting his soul skills, Yan was launched away in a single strike from the Three-Point Double-Edged Saber while in Flame Lord possession, suffering severe chest injuries 21 22.

Over the following six years, Yan trained obsessively to surpass Yang Jian, but Yang Jian’s growth only widened the gap. Driven by humiliation, resentment, and jealousy over Hu Liena’s growing interest in Yang Jian, Yan anonymously sent the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect intelligence identifying Yang Jian as a twelve-year-old Spirit King and exposing his travel plans 26 27.

The leak enabled Chen Xin and Gu Rong to ambush Yang Jian and Yue Guan. Chen Xin later identified Yan as the letter’s sender, leading Yang Jian to return to Spirit City and accuse him of betraying Spirit Hall 36 70 72. Yan denied the accusation before Bibi Dong and the gathered Spirit Hall members, but Yang Jian executed him and hung his severed head at Spirit City’s gates as a warning 72 74.

He was a poor loser. After agreeing not to use soul power or his martial soul in their first fight, he attempted to attack Yang Jian with Flame Lord possession after being humiliated. Hu Liena openly rebuked him for being unable to accept defeat 11.

His fixation on Yang Jian became increasingly destructive. Yan trained relentlessly for six years, but the failure to close the gap—combined with Hu Liena’s distance from him—turned his resentment into hatred and motivated his betrayal of Spirit Hall 26 27.

Betrayal of Spirit Hall

Unable to accept Yang Jian’s rapid rise, Yan leaks Yang Jian’s identity and movements to Ning Fengzhi of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect in hopes of provoking hostile action against him 27. The information contributes to the ambush by Chen Xin and Gu Rong 36.

Exposure and Death

After Yang Jian returns to Spirit City, he publicly confronts Yan over the leak. Yan maintains his innocence before Bibi Dong, but Yue Guan corroborates Chen Xin’s identification of him 71 72 73. Yang Jian kills Yan and displays his head at Spirit City’s gates as a warning against betrayal 74.
