History
Origins and the first Troll Empire
Zandalar emerged as the center of the first unified troll civilization. After uncorrupted troll ancestors fled Uldir, a group settled near the Great Seal and eventually produced King Dazar, who united the trolls and led their war against the Aqir. 44 632
The Zandalar Tribe organized the independent tribes into the Zul Empire, the first Troll Empire. With the aid of the Wild Gods, its forces defeated the Aqir and drove the surviving insectoid armies underground. Zandalar then encouraged individual tribes to establish strongholds across ancient Kalimdor, promising them ownership of the territories they defended. 44 134
This expansion eventually weakened central unity. The Amani and Gurubashi rose as major powers beneath the Zul Empire, while the troll tribes gradually developed separate identities and empires. Zandalar retained considerable prestige, but the original empire fractured. 44 134
Rastakhan's reign
Rastakhan, the last blood descendant of the Troll Empire's royal family, ascended as Zandalar's God-King with the support of his childhood companion, the Dark Prophet Zul. His stated goal was to restore the former glory of the troll peoples. 39
Zandalar maintained a policy of supporting weaker troll tribes through supplies, funding, and diplomacy. Prophet Zul was a principal advocate of this policy, while many other Zanchul Council members regarded non-Zandalari trolls as inferior. 245
Rastakhan was murdered by Queen Tana during the Dinosaur Festival. Her subsequent attempt to kill Tonatiuh failed when she fell from the ceremonial platform, leaving the Zandalari state leaderless and in chaos. 266
Tonatiuh and Zul's ascendancy
During the Zanchul crisis, Zul manipulated High Priestess Yazma, the Blood Trolls, and Old God forces into exposing themselves before they could seize full control of Zandalar. His stated purpose was to create conditions for Tonatiuh to take and strengthen Zandalar. 391 393
The faith of Tona and Tiu spread rapidly after the crisis. Within ten days, approximately 500,000 Zandalari Trolls had converted, driven by fear of persecution, prospects of advancement, and the prestige attached to the sun and moon gods. 399
Following the Orc War, Tonatiuh publicly assumed the role of God-King. The Loa acknowledged him as Zandalar's protector, and he revived three fallen Loa before the assembled population. 605 606 608

Geography and Settlements
| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Zandalar Island / Zandalar Isles | A major island realm in the lower central Great Sea. The text describes it as having once been continent-sized before disasters reduced it to the Zandalar Isles. 236 381 |
| Dazar'alor | Zandalar's capital and greatest troll city, built around the Great Seal. It serves as the empire's political, religious, commercial, and population center. 231 378 |
| Zuldazar | The pyramid city centered on the Great Seal. It was originally the name for the city surrounding the seal before the wider capital became known as Dazar'alor. 378 |
| Zanchul | The temple, palace, ritual, and noble district northeast of Zuldazar; seat of the Zanchuli Council and the Loa priesthood. 231 375 378 |
| Lower City | The coastal and commercial districts beneath the pyramid, including the Grand Bazaar and dock areas. 367 378 |
| Great Seal | A colossal Titan-built structure beneath and around which Dazar'alor developed. It is one of three seals imprisoning G'huun. 232 261 |
| Vol'dun | Zandalar's northwestern desert region. During the Orc War, Zekaz evacuated more than 200,000 Trolls, Vulpera, and Sethrak from the region. 489 608 |
Dazar'alor is structured around the Great Seal and the Gold Road, which links the city's tiers from the docks to its highest levels. The Great Seal has seven tiers; the lower four have four gates each, while the upper three have one gate each. 232
The capital's districts also reflect social hierarchy: Zanchul is associated with nobles and priests, Zuldazar with the middle strata, and the lower city with common residents and commerce. 378
Government and Religion
| Institution / Figure | Role |
|---|---|
| God-King | Supreme royal and religious authority. Rastakhan held the position until his death; Tonatiuh later assumes the role. 39 605 |
| Zanchuli Council | Council governing from Zanchul, composed primarily of Loa priests and high-ranking political figures. 236 396 |
| Loa priesthood | Zandalar's traditional ruling class; a Loa's influence is closely tied to the number and devotion of its followers. 305 603 |
| Prophet Zul | Former Dark Prophet and later Regent Prophet. He becomes Tonatiuh's chief political representative in Zuldazar. 393 638 660 |
| Princess Talanji | Rastakhan's heir and later Tonatiuh's wife; she remains a major royal figure during Zandalar's political transformation. 304 638 |
Zandalar is a deeply religious civilization in which Loa worship is embedded in daily life. Zandalari Trolls commonly identify themselves by the Loa they worship, and religious education is considered compatible with—rather than opposed to—civilization and scholarship. 305
Tonatiuh's rise altered this order. Rezan and the other Loa publicly accepted his position as protector of Zandalar, while Zul and priests loyal to Tona and Tiu took control of the state's practical administration. 605 638 660
Economy and Trade
- Zandalar's position in the Great Sea makes it a natural resupply point for trade between the eastern and western continents. Ships avoiding its ports must instead rely on Undermine or the dangerous Broken Isles. 236
- Its maritime commerce is protected by the Golden Fleet, whose strength discourages rival naval powers from challenging Zandalar directly. 230 350
- The Grand Bazaar is Zandalar's principal commercial center, with more than 20,000 shops within the market itself and goods drawn from across Azeroth. 236
- While travel into Dazar'alor normally requires permission and a pass, the dock district and Grand Bazaar are accessible to outsiders who register upon arrival. 236
- Zandalar permits extensive foreign trade, including regular human merchant traffic. At one point, human vessels account for at least one-fifth of ships in its harbor. 229
- The Orc invasion sharply reduced ordinary commerce, leaving the port reliant on arms dealers, opportunistic merchants, and adventurers attracted by bounties for Orc heads. 519
Armed Forces
- Golden Fleet — Zandalar's renowned navy and the foundation of its maritime influence. It later becomes the Fifth and Sixth Zandalari Legions. 230 670
- Rastari Enforcers — Elite royal troops formerly associated with the Zandalari throne; later incorporated into the First Zandalari Legion. 263 670
- Pa'ku's Wings — Elite force associated with Pa'ku's temple before military centralization. 670
- Gonk's Teeth — Elite force associated with Gonk's temple before military centralization. 670
- Giant Trolls — Powerful but short-lived warriors who exchange part of their lifespan for dark power; they hold a guaranteed seat on the Zanchul Council. 236
- Royal Guards — Powerful voodoo- and Titan-derived constructs stationed throughout Dazar'alor; individual guards are assessed as stronger than ordinary elite warriors. 242
Tonatiuh's military reform abolished the separate temple guards of the thirteen Loa and consolidated their forces into six centralized legions. The First through Fourth Legions serve as land forces, while the Fifth and Sixth Legions comprise the former Golden Fleet. 670
Culture
- Dinosaur Festival — A major Zandalar celebration held once every ten years and regarded as the largest holiday in troll society. Troll champions, chiefs, envoys, and visitors gather in Dazar'alor for the festival. 186 223
- Loa emblems — Zandalari worshippers carry small symbols of their chosen Loa as objects of prayer and connection, a custom described as unique to Zandalar. 383
- Ceremonial tradition — Zandalar maintains extensive court etiquette, priestly ranks, honor guards, hymns, and public rites surrounding the God-King and Loa. 263
- Anti-cannibal policy — Zandalar condemns cannibal troll tribes and has historically urged ordinary troll groups to eliminate them, though such tribes are often too powerful for local forces to defeat. 90
Relationships
- Farraki / Desert Trolls — Zandalar provides diplomatic contact, military supplies, scholars, and technicians to the desert troll revival; their peoples begin directly integrating after Tonatiuh unifies both powers. 304 369 670
- New Zul Empire — Tonatiuh's broader empire sends naval and ground reinforcements to defend Zandalar during the Orc War. 485 512
- Troll Loa — The traditional divine authorities of Zandalar; they later acknowledge Tonatiuh as protector and submit to the new God-King order. 605 606
- Kaldorei, Draenei, and Dragons — Allied forces join Tonatiuh's expedition to defend Zandalar from the Orc invasion. 484 512
- Kul Tiras refugees — After Kul Tiras falls to the Orcs, Zandalar accepts human refugees arriving at Dazar'alor. 653
- Orcs and Blood Trolls — Invading enemies whose alliance threatens Zandalar through Nazmir, Vol'dun, and the approaches to Dazar'alor. 485 489 620
