Appearance
Kaldorei are tall, long-eared elves. Their individuals vary in build: male druids are depicted as broad-shouldered or lanky, while female druids such as Xisali are generally tall and slender. 172
- Their height can approach that of ordinary trolls. 172
- Kaldorei and Zandalari women are similar enough in stature and ear shape that Orcs initially mistake them for the same race. 530
- The Shen'dralar Highborne are physically over ninety percent identical to ordinary Kaldorei, though they tend toward paler skin. 344
History
Kaldorei Empire
The ancient Kaldorei Empire replaced the Troll Empire as Azeroth's dominant civilization after its arcane magic shattered troll rule. 134 At its height, the empire unified over ninety percent of ancient Kalimdor and possessed an exceptionally advanced arcane civilization. 122
Queen Azshara's rule and the collapse of the Well of Eternity ended this age of supremacy. The surviving Kaldorei later overthrew the Highborne and built a society centered on Elune, nature, and the equality of their people. 153 317
Modern Kaldorei
Modern Kaldorei retain the blessings of the World Tree: near-eternal lifespans, immunity to disease, and exceptional endurance against fatigue and harsh climates. 121 566 They generally reject the Highborne path of arcane dependence, though their leaders remain conflicted over the military and scholarly value of surviving Highborne groups such as the Shen'dralar. 471
Society and Culture
Equality and governance
After the overthrow of the Highborne, Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind promoted the principle that every Kaldorei was a brother or sister regardless of occupation or standing. Formal hierarchy is therefore weak, even within military strongholds, though prominent leaders still receive respect. 153
The Sisterhood of Elune and the druids share influence in Kaldorei society, with druids often holding greater practical authority. 400
Nocturnal life
Kaldorei prefer activity at night and remain energetic long after other races would require rest. During the hottest hours of the day, they commonly sleep beneath trees, in hollows, or in treehouses. 210 314
Their endurance makes Kaldorei forces particularly valuable as nighttime guards; an allied army can rely on them to maintain watch for days without exhaustion. 566
Faith in Elune
Elune is central to Kaldorei identity, particularly through the Sisterhood of Elune and the Sentinel forces. Owls are regarded as Elune's messengers, and many priestesses historically kept owl companions. 550
The Kaldorei commemorate their first encounter with Elune through a festival called “Mother’s Day.” 495
Abilities & Skills
Druidism
Kaldorei druids wield nature-based magic and specialize in communion with the natural world, restoration, scouting, and combat. The Cenarion Circle deploys druids to investigate ecological disturbances and restore damaged land. 55 175
- Druids of the Talon excel at raven or other bird-of-prey forms, granting sustained flight and sharp aerial vision. 189
- Druids of the Claw specialize in combat forms such as bears and cheetahs. 189
- Master druids can shift among several forms without mental assimilation; lesser druids risk permanently taking on the instincts and identity of their animal forms. 189
- Safer established forms include bear, bird of prey, panther, travel, and aquatic forms. 563
- Moonkin Form is an advanced casting form that grants high affinity for nature, arcane power, and Holy Light. 563
Sentinel warfare
Kaldorei Sentinels are light-bow troops who combine ranged combat, reconnaissance, mobility, perception, and limited melee ability. Their closeness to nature lets them draw support from plants and animal companions. 216
- Sentinels use Hippogryphs for aerial travel, scouting, and combat deployment. 204 314
- Their Hippogryphs are vulnerable to focused magical attacks, which can force riders from the sky. 315
- Kaldorei military knowledge includes command, marching, combat techniques, hunter training, and animal taming. 217 294
- Their naval tradition descends from the Kaldorei Empire; their fleet is considered among Azeroth's strongest. 486
Natural restoration
Kaldorei druids can rapidly green and restore damaged terrain. Their work transformed areas of troll-held desert and jungle into lush groves and restored a former Orc camp near Broken River. 208 611
Relationships
- Zutona / Farraki Empire — Initial Cenarion observation of the rising trolls developed into training, settlement assistance, and a formal comprehensive strategic partnership. 55 216 464
- Zandalar and the Troll Empire — Kaldorei forces joined Tonatiuh's expedition to oppose the Orc invasion, fighting beside troll armies in Zandalar. 486 568
- Naga — Ancient enemies descended from the fallen Highborne; Kaldorei forces repeatedly clash with Naga led by Azshara and Lady Vashj. 316 574
- Shen'dralar — A surviving Highborne faction regarded with distrust by much of Kaldorei society, though leaders recognize the value of its arcane expertise. 471
- Orcs — Viewed as alien invaders threatening Azeroth; Kaldorei intervention in the Orc War reflects their role as Kalimdor's protectors. 484 520
