Background / History

Constantine began studying occult phenomena at fourteen as an escape from his unhappy childhood. Magic subsequently became tied to a long chain of personal losses: he caused his father’s death, lost friends and a student, and came to believe that magic spreads suffering to everyone around him 162 463.

Years of smoking left him seriously ill. He briefly pursued good deeds in hopes of reaching Heaven after death, but Satan infused him with demon blood to keep him from Heaven without curing his illness. The demon blood left him impure, physically weakened, and deeply wary of casting spells 162.

During the magical crisis following “Sleep Day,” Constantine warned Zatanna that spells were causing backlash throughout the magical world. He identified Eric Kent as a possible key to ending the deadlock, while maintaining that most endangered magicians were beyond saving 158.

Constantine later accompanied Zatanna to the Kent farm after they sensed something abnormal around Martha Kent’s unborn child. When possessed Lana Luthor attacked, he stopped Zatanna from using backlash-prone magic, deployed a demon-traded scroll as a barrier, and helped evacuate the Kents through the fireplace 162.

Constantine is cynical, sarcastic, and deliberately provocative. He mocks allies even in dangerous situations, lies to escape pressure, and regards manipulation as a practical survival tool. Despite this selfish exterior, he acts protectively toward people he considers his responsibility. He prevents Zatanna from risking magical backlash, comforts Rose after her mother’s death, and seeks answers about a hostile entity because he fears for his daughter’s safety 162 391 393.
