Background / History
Bruce Wayne operates in Gotham as Batman while maintaining the public identity of a wealthy entrepreneur and playboy. His base is located beneath a stone house near the place where his parents died; he regards remaining there as a commitment to fight for Gotham. Alfred urges him to use the Wayne family’s influence to improve the city as Bruce Wayne as well as Batman. 60
Early in his return to Gotham, Batman infiltrates the Red Hood Gang during a bank robbery. Although the gang is stopped, civilians are caught in the crossfire, leaving Bruce burdened by the cost of his decision to reveal himself rather than remain undercover. 60
Batman becomes fixated on the Court of Owls after finding an ancient owl coin connected to an unidentified murder victim. He identifies Court members Joseph and Maria Powers, only to find them dead before he can pursue them; the investigation also exposes a connection between the Court and the League of Assassins. The final Talon, Lincoln March, claims to be Bruce’s younger brother. 64 119
Appearance
Batman wears a pitch-black armored suit, a cape, and a cowl that conceals his identity. In his early appearances, Bruce is described as young and sharply featured, though visibly worn down by exhaustion and sleepless nights. 60 63
- Black armor with a gliding cape and reinforced gauntlets. 63 141
- Uses a deliberately hoarse, intimidating voice while masked. 63 119
- His armor can resist gunfire; Gotham children once mistook him for a robot after seeing it withstand bullets and melt a gun. 62
- Frequently operates from rooftops, alleys, sewers, and Gotham’s underground infrastructure. 60 451
Personality
Batman is driven by an uncompromising need to confront Gotham’s violence and corruption. He is intensely self-critical: civilian casualties, failed investigations, and the possibility of becoming consumed by darkness all weigh heavily on him. 60 140
He holds firmly to restraint, particularly where children and innocents are concerned. Even when Damian attacks him with lethal intent, Batman initially refuses to strike the teenager; he later objects to Constantine’s plan to use Rachel as bait against Homelander. 452 450
Batman is guarded and distrustful, preferring to withhold plans and prepare contingencies. However, he is capable of working with metahumans, magicians, police, and former enemies when Gotham or the world faces a larger threat. 214 395 454
His opposition to Homelander is ideological as well as personal. Batman rejects peace imposed through fear and force, arguing that humanity must retain the right to determine its own future rather than submit to a self-appointed god. 289 434
