Background

Arrival and adoption

Clark arrived on Earth as an infant in a Kryptonian escape pod. Zhang Tong—later named Eric Kent—pushed him out of the pod and took his place inside shortly before Jonathan and Martha Kent found them. The Kents adopted both children and assumed they were brothers because they had been found beside the same spacecraft. Since Eric was inside the cabin, Jonathan and Martha believed Eric was the younger child who had been protected, making Clark their eldest son. 1 2

Clark grew up on Kent Farm in Smallville alongside Eric. Unlike Eric, whose powers manifested early, Clark initially kept a low profile and only began awakening his Kryptonian abilities in high school. 2
