Background / History

A-Nan lived with Lu Chen in Black Mud City's outer-city mud alleys. Frail, blind, and dependent on him for care, she carried an old cloth doll missing half an ear and suffered from a persistent cough that Lu Chen treated with scavenged herbs. Even before her transformation, she could instinctively sense hostile spiritual-energy fluctuations despite being unable to see. 1

During the Azure Firmament Sword Sect's Dust-Severing Rite, an elder's sword aura struck the alley. Lu Chen shielded A-Nan, but she was flung into a sewage pit with a fatal wound through her chest. 2 Lu Chen saved her by refining qilin blood into a gentle drop of purified essence and feeding it to her, beginning the painful remaking of her body through Ultimate Dao blood. 5

The transformation gradually produced jade bones, extreme physical strength, and a new form of perception. A-Nan snapped a century-old cold-iron chain while unconscious, later ground part of the City-Guarding Stele into powder with her fingers, and eventually reached the first stage of the Jade Bone Realm. 14 33 72

Appearance

A-Nan is a small, initially frail girl who is usually carried or wrapped in a Netherwind Wolf hide by Lu Chen. Her blindness is marked first by cloudy white films over her eyes, then by pupil-less, pure-white spiritual eyes. 1 33 95

A-Nan is initially timid and frightened by the violence and spiritual pressure surrounding her, instinctively seeking Lu Chen's clothing or shelter whenever danger approaches. 1 She trusts his blood qi and protection completely, eventually remaining calm even while he fights around her. 7 11

Her sensitivity does not make her passive. She repeatedly warns Lu Chen about approaching threats, malicious cultivators, formations, curses, and hidden creatures. 11 33 60 91 92 As her Jade Bone constitution develops, she becomes increasingly selfless and protective in return, exhausting her own essence to save Lu Chen from sword intent and using her blood essence to heal his arm. 83 93
