History

Founding and early structure

Konoha was founded as a union between the Senju and Uchiha clans, later absorbing the Sarutobi and Shimura clans before welcoming further clans. Its first Hokage was elected by a one-person, one-vote system; after the First Hokage's death, Tobirama Senju succeeded him. 157 191

Under the First Hokage, the Senju clan abolished its formal clan structure and surname to integrate fully into the village. The Uchiha, however, retained their territory, crest, and distinct clan identity, creating a lasting tension between clan loyalty and village loyalty. 191

The Hokage succession process later became standardized: candidates require nomination by Konoha's higher-ups, appointment by the Land of Fire Daimyō, and approval through a jōnin vote. 157

Third Shinobi World War

Konoha entered a multi-front conflict after Sunagakure's preparations to invade were exposed; Toru also believed Kumogakure, Kirigakure, and Iwagakure were preparing to threaten the village. 60 73

Nine-Tails attack and reconstruction

The Nine-Tails' rampage devastated Konoha, causing civilian panic, casualties, and mass evacuations to shelters. The Konoha Military Police Force handled the evacuation of non-combatants. 170

During the attack, Konoha's higher-ups barred the Uchiha clan from fighting to avoid arousing suspicion. This decision worsened existing distrust: after the crisis, civilians accused the Uchiha of plotting against the village, while Military Police members clashed with them outside the shelters. 171 181

Uchiha coup and Fifth Hokage

Fourth Shinobi World War

Konoha formed alliances with Sunagakure and Kirigakure, creating the three-nation Allied Nations. 230

After Uchiha Madara declared war in Konoha's name, the other nations formed an Anti-Konoha Pact. The resulting Fourth Shinobi World War was fought primarily across the Lands of Lightning, Earth, and Rain. 231
