Did I come to the wrong place?
No, that couldn't be right.
He took two steps back and looked at the sign above the door. The more Yan thought about it, the stranger it felt.
They were a bunch of thorns in the side. Getting them to behave was already impressive enough, but making them polite and refined was far harder than keeping them under control.
Yan knew exactly what kind of people made up Third Squad.
He still remembered what he had gone through when he had first become their captain.
Looking closely, he realized there was an extra person in the break room. Compared to the others, she looked rather petite and adorable.
"A newcomer?"
So that was why every one of them was acting like a completely different person.
Yan had practically thought the sun was rising in the west.
A newcomer had arrived, and she was a cute girl at that.
Except... why did this newcomer look a little familiar?
"Captain."
Izumi, somewhat uneasy, hurriedly bowed in greeting.
Although she had passed the Personnel Department's review, whether she could ultimately remain in the Police Department depended on Yan's evaluation.
If Yan gave her a poor evaluation, Izumi would have to leave the Police Department squad and apply to be assessed again.
It was like Ninja Academy students graduating. Their squad leader had to assess them first, and if they felt the students fell short in strength, temperament, or other areas, those graduates could be sent back for retraining and held back at the academy.
Looking down at the nervous, reserved girl before him, Yan fell silent for a few seconds before asking, "You're Uchiha Izumi? Aunt Hazuki's daughter?"
Uchiha Izumi was not exactly an Uchiha born and raised. At best, she could be considered someone who had returned to the clan halfway through her life.
Her mother was named Uchiha Hazuki. When she was young, Hazuki had married outside the clan. After her husband died, she returned to the clan with Izumi, and Izumi changed her name and began using the Uchiha surname.
To be precise, the mother and daughter were not in a particularly good position within the Uchiha clan.
"Yes."
Izumi nodded nervously and said, "Mother often mentioned you, Captain. After I graduated, she persuaded me to join the Police Department so that Mother and I could integrate more thoroughly into the Uchiha clan."
"I see."
Yan suddenly understood. He had nearly thought that his butterfly wings had influenced Izumi, but it turned out to be Uchiha Hazuki's decision.
Because of her mother, Izumi had not joined the squad assigned by the academy after graduating. Instead, she had applied to be assessed by the Police Department.
Yan nodded. "Since you've chosen to join the Police Department, work hard and keep your feet on the ground. I believe the clan will sincerely accept you and Aunt Hazuki."
"Get ready. We're starting patrols. Izumi, follow me and learn first."
It was an old Police Department tradition for the captain to guide newcomers. Izumi had just joined, so Yan, as her captain, needed to lead her personally.
"Yes!!"
The squad members answered loudly.
After Yan entered the office, Zhiyan and the others did not forget to wink at Izumi. "Izumi, don't worry. The captain is actually very gentle and a very good person. You won't have any problems with your assessment."
"I believe I can stay."
Feeling immense pressure, Izumi gave an awkward smile. She was nervous, even though her mother had repeatedly told her that Yan was not a strict person.
If the Sixth Elder lying in the hospital heard that, he might have coughed up three pints of blood in anger.
Just as Yan was leading his people out to begin their patrol, an unwelcome guest arrived at the Police Department.
An unwelcome guest who made everyone in the Police Department tense.
Leaning on his wooden cane, Danzo slowly walked into the Police Department lobby. Completely unconcerned that his arrival had silenced the surroundings, he swept his gloomy gaze across the room, stood in the center of the lobby, and said coldly, "I want to see Uchiha Yan."
He had waited all night, yet none of his subordinates had returned.
No matter what, Danzo had to make this trip. He needed to put Yan in his place and, while he was at it, see whether he could retrieve his people.
It was a matter of pride. Danzo had no choice but to take it seriously.
"Looking for me?"
Yan happened to be coming down the stairs when he heard that. He looked over curiously.
Well, well. He came in person?
The entire Police Department lobby fell silent. Someone quietly slipped away to notify Fugaku, the clan head.
Danzo's personal visit was no good thing.
At least, it was no good thing for the Uchiha.
"I wonder what the Advisor wants with me?"
Yan walked down toward Danzo and waved at those around him. "Get back to work. The Advisor isn't a ghost. Look how scared he's made you."
"This old man dislikes sharp-tongued brats."
Danzo's exposed left eye narrowed slightly. An old fox like him could naturally tell that Yan was insulting him indirectly.
A gloomy aura spread from Danzo, but Yan was not affected in the slightest.
"What a coincidence, I don't really like old men who hide in the shadows either. These types are like venomous snakes, always leaping out to bite people whenever they please, making one wish they could just beat them to death with a stick. Don't you agree, Honorable Advisor?"
So what if I insult you? As long as I don't name you directly, come bite me, Danzo.
Yan was not afraid of falling out with Danzo, nor was he afraid of making trouble with him. You fucking sent people after me. Why should I be polite to you?
Don't ever think you can deal with me the way you dealt with Shisui.
At a time like this, the calmer Yan appeared, the more dangerous he would be. If things blew up instead, more and more eyes would be watching Danzo, and Yan himself would be safer.
A cold glint flashed in Danzo's eyes as his hand tightened around his cane.
That alone showed how unsettled he was inside.
Thinking about it, it made sense. Someone like Danzo had long grown accustomed to being above everyone else. Forget being insulted to his face—even the slightest disrespect would make him uncomfortable.
"Evil Uchiha brat, you're quite something."
Danzo's face was cold. He paid no attention to the furious, resentful looks the Uchiha around him were giving him. Right in front of everyone, he branded Yan as evil, making sure to include the name Uchiha.
"Thank you for the compliment, Advisor. But what exactly do you want with me?"
Yan paid no attention whatsoever to Danzo's description of him and instead smiled broadly. "I still have a mission to carry out. There are too many rats and venomous snakes hiding in the village's gutters. If we're not careful, those beasts will jump out and bite people. It concerns the village's security, so as a Police Department squad captain, I have no choice but to take it seriously."
Come on, then. Let's hurt each other. You don't dare attack me openly anyway.
When it came to insulting people, Uchiha Yan had never feared anyone.
"Where are my people?"
After insulting Yan once only to be bombarded by Yan in return, with all sorts of descriptions like rats and venomous snakes thrown at him, Danzo knew he was no match for Yan in this kind of exchange. So he simply stated why he had come.
"People?"
Yan feigned confusion. "What people? Why would the Advisor's people be in the Police Department? Did you come to the wrong place? You should go home and take a look."
As he spoke, Yan suddenly slapped his forehead.
He hurriedly apologized.
"My apologies, my apologies. I forgot that the Advisor has devoted himself to serving the village and is all alone, without any family."
"Uchiha Yan!!!"
Unable to endure it any longer, Danzo exploded.
