Yan had humiliated him in front of so many people, beating around the bush to insult him. That was one thing, but he had even mocked him for being alone, without a wife or children, making him sound utterly pitiful.
No one could accept words like that.
"Uchiha Yan."
An angry shout rang out. Having received word, Fugaku rushed over and bellowed at Yan:
"What are you doing? Why are you speaking so rudely to the advisor?
Why aren't you patrolling? Have you forgotten your duties and mission?"
Well done.
Yan really wanted to give Fugaku a thumbs-up. The cowardly clan head had finally shown some backbone for once.
With a silent smile, Yan shrugged at Danzo, gave him a helpless look, then spread his hands and waved them.
"Then I won't disturb the clan head and the advisor any longer."
"Team Three, come with me. Don't stay here and bother the old man. After all, old men without families tend to have bad tempers. Be careful, or he might scold you."
"..."
The team members all lowered their heads and silently followed behind him. Either they did not dare breathe too loudly, or they were desperately holding back their laughter.
Zhiyan, the big fellow, for instance, had his head lowered and his shoulders shaking. One look was enough to tell that he was having a hard time suppressing his laughter.
It could be said that Yan had set a precedent within the Uchiha clan.
Any Uchiha who knew Danzo and understood what he had done hated the old bastard to the core.
But circumstances were beyond their control, so everyone could only bury their anger and hatred in their hearts.
Yan, however, had directly cursed him out in front of countless people.
You called me a brat, so I called you an old bastard—an old bastard who spoke in veiled sarcasm.
You called me an evil Uchiha brat, so I called you a rat and a venomous snake hiding in the gutter.
Anyway, I never named anyone.
If you were certain I was talking about you, then I'd apologize.
To the other clansmen, Danzo was a lofty figure in the village. To Yan, he was nothing but bullshit.
As long as Danzo did not resort to underhanded tricks, Yan could not care less about him.
Even if Danzo did try something underhanded,
Fugaku, as the clan head, would find a way to protect Yan.
If anything happened to Yan, countless people in the clan would likely lose faith in him as their clan head.
As Yan's shield, Uchiha Fugaku had no choice but to grit his teeth and endure it, whether he wanted to or not.
That was why he had rushed over the moment he received the notice and ordered Yan to immediately carry out his duties. It sounded like he was scolding him, but he was actually protecting him.
"Clan Head Fugaku, your Uchiha clan truly has no regard for the law!!"
Yan had left, swaggering away. With his stomach full of rage, Danzo could only vent it on Fugaku.
"Please do not be angry, sir. Yan is still a child. I will educate him, and I guarantee there will not be a next time."
Uchiha Fugaku was straightforward about it. Things had already come to this, so he could only admit it. He would endure the reprimand and deal with this matter first.
"Hmph." Danzo snorted.
"There will not be a next time. Bring my people out."
The threat was obvious. If Danzo found the opportunity, he would not mind killing Yan at any moment to vent the fury in his heart.
So he really had come for his people.
Uchiha Fugaku had already guessed this would happen. Fortunately, when the Police Department had arrested those people last night, he had already prepared an explanation.
"Sir, the Police Department does not have any of your people. However, two individuals of unknown identity attacked Yan last night and were arrested by the Police Department. They have now been sent to the prison. Why don't you go take a look?"
"You..."
My people had been arrested, and they were people of unknown identity?
What Danzo found even harder to accept was that his people had been sent to prison.
"You're very good. I'll remember this!!"
As one of the village's higher-ups, and someone not skilled at insulting others, Danzo could not simply start cursing like Yan.
No matter how furious he was, he could only endure it for now and settle this debt slowly in the future.
His people had already been sent to prison. The Third Hokage had definitely received the news. At the thought of embarrassing himself before the Third Hokage, Danzo felt like killing someone.
After shooting Fugaku a vicious glare with his sinister eyes, Danzo turned and left, leaning on his wooden cane.
Izumi was completely numb. She had thought she would smoothly start her new job today, but what had she just witnessed?
Her captain had actually cursed out one of the village's higher-ups, the Hokage's advisor.
Izumi felt as though the road ahead in her life had turned dark.
All she could do now was follow Yan numbly. She had not even managed to remember the boundaries of Team Three's patrol area.
"What, did that scare you?"
Stopping in front of a small shop, Yan bought several skewers of dango and handed them to Izumi.
"Thank you, Captain."
She accepted the dango blankly. Several seconds later, Izumi finally came back to herself and hurriedly bowed in thanks.
Holding the dango in her hands, Izumi felt conflicted. She hesitated over whether she should eat it.
In the end, Izumi could not resist the temptation of the dango and began taking small bites.
After eating two skewers, the little girl gradually returned to normal and no longer looked as frightened as before.
It seemed sweets could help people shift their moods.
"Everyone seems afraid of us."
Only then did Izumi notice that as she and Yan walked through the streets, many people hurriedly stepped aside. Some even looked at them with anger and hatred.
"Yes."
Since she had joined the Police Department, she was now one of them. She would face this situation every day in the future. As her captain, Yan felt it necessary to let Izumi understand the harshness of the world.
"Those who fear us do so because of the Police Department's terrible reputation. After all, in order to maintain public order, most of the cases the Police Department handles are unpopular. Over time, this situation formed. Some say they fear the Uchiha, but that isn't correct."
Yan shook his head regretfully.
"These villagers do not fear the Uchiha. They fear the Police Department."
"Of course, it also has something to do with the way we Uchiha conduct ourselves. Clan members are never welcomed wherever they go. You may have already noticed that Uchiha at the Ninja Academy are easily targeted and looked down upon."
Izumi did not know much about the Police Department, but she deeply understood Yan's example because she had experienced it herself.
Children from civilian families kept their distance because she was an Uchiha ninja, while children from clans avoided her because she came from the Uchiha.
"As for those who look at us with anger and hatred, most of them have been taken to the Police Department before, or have family members or friends who were arrested."
"Many people file complaints, claiming that we Uchiha enforce the law violently and deliberately target civilians. In truth, most of those complaints come from villagers or ninja who resent being arrested."
"They cannot retaliate against us, so they can only file complaints to disgust us."
Maintaining public order meant dealing with countless troublesome matters, and handling them easily offended people. After enough time passed, it would be strange if the Uchiha were well-liked.
Most importantly, the village would not publicize the Uchiha's good side.
But whenever the Uchiha did something poorly, the higher-ups would watch them closely.
With that, it would be strange if the Uchiha had a good reputation.
Just look at the Hyuga clan. When it came to civilians, the Hyuga clan was even more arrogant than the Uchiha. How many people in the village criticized the Hyuga clan?
Very few. It could even be said that there were none.
