Background / History

Jiraiya is one of Konoha’s legendary Three Sannin alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Each Sannin holds a summoning contract with one of the Three Great Sage Regions; Jiraiya’s is Mount Myoboku. During the conflict with Kirigakure’s Fourth Mizukage, he reunites with Tsunade and Orochimaru to support Konoha’s forces. 54 55

On the battlefield, he meets Uchiha Saitama and is impressed by the young Uchiha’s ability, particularly his self-developed Lightning Release techniques. Jiraiya offers to ask Mount Myoboku’s two elder sages whether Saitama can train in Sage Mode. 55

After Orochimaru’s human experimentation is exposed, Jiraiya intercepts his former teammate and demands that he return to Konoha. Though he declares that he will carry Orochimaru’s sins with him if necessary, Orochimaru refuses to turn back. Their clash ends inconclusively after Saitama intervenes, and Jiraiya remains determined to find Orochimaru despite the betrayal. 77 78

Jiraiya later investigates Akatsuki in the Land of Rivers after receiving intelligence from Minato. He captures and brutally interrogates four of the organization’s peripheral members, then ambushes Hidan and Kakuzu at Samurai Pavilion. His encounter exposes Akatsuki’s unusual abilities, including Hidan’s immortality, Kakuzu’s multiple hearts, and White Zetsu’s flesh-and-blood clones. 117 118 119 120 121

After returning to Konoha with Kakashi’s team, Jiraiya provides Minato with intelligence and samples from the battle. His suspicion toward the disguised “Yufei” grows, as the Amegakure jonin’s mannerisms remind him of Uchiha Saitama; however, he does not act without proof. 122 123 127

Believing that Akatsuki may be connected to Nagato—the former student he remembers as possessing legendary eyes—Jiraiya prepares to investigate Amegakure personally. 132

Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall, broad, powerfully built middle-aged man with long snow-white hair. His usual appearance is somewhat sloppy and casual, contrasting with the imposing presence he projects in battle. 55 117 118

  • Long white hair, which he weaponizes through ninjutsu. 78 119
  • Pale face and a large, muscular frame. 55 117
  • Wears robes marked with the character for “oil” when operating alongside Mount Myoboku’s sages. 122
  • Uses toad-like face paint while preparing or employing senjutsu. 118

Personality

Jiraiya is flamboyant, easygoing, and frequently improper around younger shinobi. He introduces himself with exaggerated poses, earns regular reprimands from Tsunade, and is known for indulging in his interests while traveling. 54 55 117

Behind that unserious exterior, he is observant, patient, and highly protective of Konoha. He carefully studies unfamiliar techniques in battle, collects enemy samples for analysis, and refuses to endanger younger shinobi by letting them confront Akatsuki’s core members unprepared. 121 122

His attachment to Orochimaru is one of his greatest emotional weaknesses. Even after Orochimaru defects, Jiraiya repeatedly tries to bring him home rather than kill him, though he is willing to fight seriously when necessary. 77 78 135 137

Abilities & Skills

Mount Myoboku Sage Arts

Jiraiya inherited Mount Myoboku’s senjutsu and is recognized as the Toad Sage. His contract with the sacred land enables him to summon its elder sages and use their coordinated techniques. 54 55 106

  • Can summon Fukasaku and Shima to fight from his shoulders. 119
  • Uses senjutsu chakra to enhance his physical resilience and combat ability. 118 119
  • His Sage Mode requires preparation; he cannot instantly absorb natural energy in combat. 121
  • His senjutsu still has imperfections despite his experience. 121 132

Toad Oil Flame-Wind Bullet

A three-person combination technique performed with Fukasaku and Shima. Jiraiya supplies the fire, Fukasaku adds toad oil, and Shima uses Wind Release to spread and intensify the flames. 119

  • Produces a wide-ranging sea of fire capable of suppressing Kakuzu’s elemental assault. 119 120
  • Its destructive power is comparable to ordinary senjutsu. 119
  • Requires the coordinated presence of both elder sages. 119

Rasengan

Jiraiya wields the Rasengan as a close-range finishing technique and can form enhanced versions of it in battle. 77 118 120

  • Uses it against Orochimaru during their attempted interception. 77
  • Shatters Hidan’s weapon and inflicts severe chest damage despite Hidan’s immortality. 118 119
  • Uses an enlarged Rasengan to destroy one of Kakuzu’s hearts. 120
  • Its charging time is a concern against exceptionally powerful opponents. 134

White Hair Ninjutsu

Jiraiya can control and harden his white hair into restraints, armor, and piercing defenses. 78 118 119 150

  • Lion’s Mane Jutsu — Extends his hair into strong, flexible strands to bind targets. 78 119 150
  • Needle Jizo — Hardens his hair into a spiked defensive shell that blocks attacks and impales nearby snakes. 118 150 151
  • Used Lion’s Mane Jutsu to catch Saitama’s Wood Release clone and restrain Orochimaru. 78 150

Toad Mouth Bind Technique

Jiraiya summons the stomach wall of Mount Myoboku’s Rock-Dwelling Toad to imprison targets within a living chamber. 117

  • Restrains enemies by embedding them in the summoned stomach wall. 117
  • Previously trapped Itachi and Kisame with the technique, though Amaterasu allowed their escape. 117

Combat Analysis and Taijutsu

Jiraiya combines powerful taijutsu with careful battlefield analysis. He studies opponents rather than rushing into uncertain confrontations. 118 121

  • His physical strength can break Kakuzu’s Earth Release hardening. 118
  • Identifies that Kakuzu’s masked monsters are linked to his survival through repeated observation. 120 121
  • Discovers that White Zetsu clones are physical organisms rather than ordinary chakra constructs. 121
  • Collects Earth Grudge Fear threads and White Zetsu remains for Konoha’s research division. 121 122 127

Equipment / Items

  • Kunai. 118
  • Sealing scrolls used to preserve enemy samples. 121 122
  • Mount Myoboku summoning contract. 54 55
  • Make-Out Paradise novels, which provide him substantial royalties. 117

Relationships

  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and longtime companion. She frequently rebukes his behavior, but they cooperate closely in battle and discuss Akatsuki, Orochimaru, and village affairs together. 54 124 150 151
  • Orochimaru — Former childhood companion and fellow Sannin. Jiraiya refuses to abandon him after his defection and repeatedly attempts to bring him back to Konoha. 77 78 135 137
  • Uchiha Saitama — Initially regards Saitama as a talented, resilient Uchiha and considers arranging Sage Mode training for him. Later investigates his possible connection to Akatsuki and suspects “Yufei” is Saitama in disguise. 55 117 127
  • Minato Namikaze — Former student and the Fourth Hokage. Jiraiya reports Akatsuki intelligence to Minato and assists with the development of new ninjutsu. 122 132
  • Kakashi Hatake — A younger Konoha shinobi Jiraiya protects from Akatsuki-level threats. They return to Konoha together after the Land of Rivers investigation. 121 122 123
