Background / History

Konoha commander

Orochimaru commands Konoha’s reinforcements against Sunagakure and shares responsibility for the front with Shikaku Nara. During preparations for the decisive engagement, he volunteers to confront the enemy’s main force alongside the jōnin guard, despite the prospect of facing several Kage-level opponents 11 18.

His duel with the new Kazekage, Rasa, ends in a draw, leaving both badly wounded. During the fighting, Saitama regards Orochimaru as Konoha’s spiritual pillar: his reputation and performance directly affect the army’s morale 20 21.

Orochimaru notices Saitama’s abundant chakra and ambition early, later reporting his exceptional battlefield performance to the Third Hokage. His interest develops from evaluating a promising Uchiha into proposing cooperation over the clan’s position within Konoha 12 23 53.

Hidden Mist front

On the Hidden Mist front, Orochimaru cannot completely suppress Fourth Mizukage Yagura. A clash with the partially transformed jinchūriki nearly kills him, but he returns to action after two days of recovery 53 55.

He assumes full command of the front and coordinates with Tsunade and Jiraiya. Manda provides substantial battlefield support, defeating four Hidden Mist summons while Orochimaru and Yagura restrain one another 54 55.

Although still a leading Hokage candidate, Orochimaru has increasingly devoted himself to experiments rather than political advancement. He accepts Minato Namikaze’s impending succession without significant resentment 53 77.

Defection

After returning to Konoha, Orochimaru is confronted by Hiruzen Sarutobi and ANBU in his hidden laboratory over human experimentation and missing village shinobi. He escapes using poisonous gas and a concealed passage, recognizing that his teacher deliberately held back 77.

Jiraiya intercepts him and offers to share responsibility for his crimes if he returns. Orochimaru refuses, viewing Konoha as a prison that restricts him. Saitama interrupts their confrontation and delays Jiraiya’s pursuit, allowing Orochimaru to escape 77 78.

The Third Hokage declares Orochimaru an S-rank rogue ninja. Orochimaru plans to continue his work in the Land of Fields, while retaining a hidden base staffed by loyal war orphans 77 78 79.

Independent research and Saitama partnership

Years of cooperation with Saitama redirect much of Orochimaru’s research toward Kekkei Genkai. By Saitama’s later visit, roughly half of his research directions originate from his partner’s suggestions. Orochimaru supplies experimental work, technique refinements, and biological materials in exchange for useful ideas and data 84 85.

His work includes Shin’s unusual body, Hashirama Cells, cloning, curse marks, and Impure World Reincarnation. He successfully reincarnates Hatake Sakumo and also gives Saitama intelligence about Danzo’s planned journey to the Land of Grass 84 85.

Orochimaru travels to Kirigakure, treating the approaching Kaguya Clan massacre as an opportunity for experimentation. He encounters the young Kimimaro, offers him purpose, and later keeps him close for personal instruction while regarding his Shikotsumyaku-bearing body as a valuable vessel 102 104 105 106.

Ancient-history investigation

Orochimaru’s search for chakra’s origins leads him and Saitama to an ancient grotto in the Land of Rain. Its murals depict the Rabbit Goddess, the collapse of her worship, and the rise of a new Sage. Orochimaru considers them a missing piece of his theory, while Saitama finds little immediate practical value in them 131 132.

In the Land of Lightning, he follows further ruins to an ancient altar, destroys its central statue, and retrieves a parchment scroll. The document contains historical information rather than ninjutsu, but fills gaps in his understanding of the ancient era 133.

Renewed confrontation with Konoha

After Hidden Stone shinobi discover Orochimaru traveling with Saitama, Konoha dispatches Jiraiya and five younger shinobi to intercept them. Orochimaru leaves the younger team to Saitama and engages his former companion 134 135 137.

Their duel initially reaches a stalemate. Tsunade’s arrival places Orochimaru under greater pressure, and her enhanced punches inflict damage that ordinary taijutsu cannot. When Saitama arrives, Orochimaru exploits Tsunade’s fear of blood and covers their retreat with a mass of venomous snakes 146 150 151.

Following Hiruzen’s death, Orochimaru reflects on his former teacher’s legacy with complicated feelings. His laboratory work continues, including the development of clones implanted with different Kekkei Genkai 152 153.

Appearance

  • Complexion and hair: Pale skin and shoulder-length black hair 56 131.
  • Eyes: Golden or amber eyes with vertical, snake-like pupils 18 53.
  • Facial markings: Purple eyeshadow and purple-outlined lips 84 142.
  • Accessories: Purple tomoe earrings 53.
  • Clothing: Deep-purple robes with bow-shaped ribbons behind him during his investigation in the Land of Rain 131.
  • Distinguishing mannerisms: Frequently licks his lips with a long tongue; speaks in a hoarse, hissing voice 11 18 136.

Personality

Orochimaru is fundamentally a scholar pursuing truth. He seeks to understand his origins, his existence, and his destination, and treats ancient history as valuable even when it offers no immediate combat advantage. His enthusiasm over discoveries can resemble a child finding treasure 132 133 137.

His curiosity is inseparable from cruelty. He treats human bodies as research resources, retains mutilated experimental subjects, and values Shin’s continued existence chiefly because his body remains useful. Displaced war orphans and rare bloodline users become targets for recruitment and experimentation 77 84.

Cooperation, for him, rests on shared interests rather than moral agreement. He enjoys Saitama’s ideas and the relative lack of intrigue in their partnership, but Saitama does not assume this means Orochimaru would openly support Akatsuki in a war against the entire shinobi world 106 131 137.

Despite his attempts to sever old ties, he remains affected by Jiraiya and Hiruzen. He instinctively senses Jiraiya’s proximity, and Saitama believes their bond prevents him from fighting at full strength during their later confrontation 137 151 152.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu and forbidden-technique development

Orochimaru possesses broad knowledge of multiple nature transformations and forbidden techniques, substantially exceeding Saitama’s early understanding of ninjutsu 53.

  • Identifies flaws in existing techniques and develops improved formulas 84 130.
  • Collects tissue from powerful deceased shinobi, including through grave excavation 130.
  • Is considered by Saitama the foremost authority to consult about the sealing formula embedded in his heart; its removal is planned, not shown completed 117.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru improves the Second Hokage’s technique, focusing on stronger control, greater stability, and better vessels 84 85.

  • Demonstrated summon: Hatake Sakumo, whose movement and consciousness Orochimaru can suppress 85.
  • Documented control limit: Three Sakumo-level fighters or about twenty ordinary jōnin at the time of the initial successful demonstration 85.
  • Vessel limitation: Stronger vessels risk collapse, while weaker ones reduce the reincarnated shinobi’s power 84.
  • Preferred experimental material: Vessels implanted with Hashirama Cells offer low collapse rates and strong power restoration, but successful cell fusion is difficult 84.
  • Remaining danger: Summons exceeding the caster’s control may break free and turn against them 130.

Cloning and genetic modification

Orochimaru develops cloned tissue, studies compatibility with Hashirama Cells, and experiments with inherited abilities 84 106 153.

  • Cultivates Shin’s replacement arm with Hashirama Cells 84.
  • Supplies Danzo with Shin’s Sharingan-implanted arm as part of their agreement 84.
  • Prepares Hashirama Cell–containing clones as reincarnation vessels 124.
  • Develops clones implanted with various Kekkei Genkai 153.

Curse marks and natural-energy research

His curse marks combine Jūgo’s traits with his own techniques to produce power associated with natural energy and senjutsu chakra 106.

  • Can greatly increase a subject’s strength, but may cause bodily mutation 106.
  • Failed subjects display distorted bodies and tomoe-shaped marks at the backs of their necks 84.
  • Research progress does not establish mastery of Snake Sage Art: he failed Ryūchi Cave’s trial and used a forbidden technique to reverse his snake transformation 109.

Snake techniques and summoning

Orochimaru uses venomous snakes for offense, restraint, and escape, alongside his contract with Ryūchi Cave 77 107 151.

  • Summons Manda for large-scale battlefield combat 19 53 54.
  • Releases snakes from his sleeves to attack or bind opponents 77 146 150.
  • Uses Evil Snake Arm Explosion, causing snakes wrapped around Jiraiya to explode 77.
  • Expels a mass of snakes from his mouth to obstruct pursuit 151.

Modified body and survival

Cellular modification gives Orochimaru an unnaturally flexible body and exceptional resistance to physical attacks 146 151.

  • Slips his arm free from Jiraiya’s grip through boneless flexibility 151.
  • Is nearly immune to ordinary taijutsu, though Tsunade’s enhanced strength can inflict substantial damage 146.
  • Restores his visibly caved-in chest and abdomen during the later battle 151.
  • Survives a near-fatal encounter with transformed Yagura and returns to the battlefield after two days 55.

Command and tactics

Orochimaru’s tactical analysis, battlefield simulations, and grasp of the overall situation are described as comparable to Shikaku Nara’s 56.

  • Commands major fronts and adjusts deployments when reinforcements arrive 11 54 55.
  • Recognizes the tactical loss caused by transferring Saitama and the Ino-Shika-Cho forces elsewhere 56.
  • Exploits emotional weaknesses, including Tsunade’s hemophobia, to create escape opportunities 151.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Used in close combat; can extend unexpectedly and is reinforced with chakra to cut Jiraiya’s binding hair 146 150 151.
  • Ryūchi Cave summoning scroll — Lent to Saitama, allowing him to sign the contract and summon Manda 106 107.
  • Improved Impure World Reincarnation scroll — Offers his refined technique to Saitama after the successful Sakumo experiment 85.
  • Biological sample collection — Includes material from Sakumo, the Third Raikage, the Second Tsuchikage, and the Second Mizukage 130 134.
