Background / History

Jiang Lan was a 24-year-old man who stayed up late using his game character’s divine pet, Lord of Tides · Starlight Ruth King, before abruptly transmigrating bodily to Tianshui City in the Heaven Dou Empire. He arrived in the body of a six-year-old, still wearing his modern clothes and retaining memories of his previous life. After an initial panic, he adapted quickly and began searching for a way to survive in the world of martial souls. 1

During Tianshui Academy’s public martial-soul awakening, he awakened Lord of Tides · Starlight Ruth King: a noble water-attributed dragon martial soul. His innate full soul power and extreme bloodline suppression convinced Tianshui Academy’s dean, Shui Qinghan, to retain him despite the academy’s usual female-only admissions rule. Jiang Lan became Shui Qinghan’s disciple, allowing him to join the academy through her personal exception. 2 3

Shui Qinghan took Jiang Lan to the Frozen Forest for his first soul ring. There, he revealed his innate domain, Sea of Tides, and used its stacked defensive enhancement to absorb a thousand-year Azurewave Dragon Sturgeon ring. The ring granted access to several inherited skill pools, from which he selected Starlight Strike. 4 5 6

After discovering the true value of whale glue, Jiang Lan shared the information with Shui Qinghan. His knowledge allowed Tianshui Academy to acquire whale glue as a cultivation resource, while his own consumption of it further strengthened his body and stabilized his foundation. 7 8 9 10

At Tianshui Academy, Jiang Lan enrolled alongside Shui Bing'er and Shui Yue'er. He trained regularly, reached Rank 20 in eight months, and later traveled with Shui Qinghan and Shui Bing'er to Dragon City and the Far North in search of the Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow Cave. His knowledge led the group through an Ice Extreme Divine Crystal Mine and ultimately to the Ice Marrow itself. 19 21 23 24 26

After acquiring his second soul ring, Jiang Lan and Shui Bing'er used concealed identities to gain combat experience in Dragon City’s Grand Soul Arena, while cultivating within the Ice Marrow Cave between matches. Shui Yue'er and later Xue Wu joined the group’s cultivation, allowing all of them to benefit from the cave’s mimetic environment and Jiang Lan’s martial-soul aura. 31 36 37 40 44

Jiang Lan reached Rank 30 and insisted on pursuing a ten-thousand-year third soul ring. Although Shui Qinghan’s spiritual-power test triggered backlash when Lord of Tides instinctively repelled her probe, Jiang Lan discovered that his water-element power could heal such mental backlash. He subsequently absorbed the ten-thousand-year Mystic Nether Python ring and chose Starlight · Water and Sky as One as his third soul skill. 57 58 59

Following Shui Qinghan’s breakthrough to the Title Douluo realm, Jiang Lan returned with the group to Tianshui City. Shui Qinghan began gathering water-attributed and dragon-blooded advanced-class students around him, seeking to develop the cultivation acceleration and martial-soul evolution effects of Lord of Tides into a foundation for Tianshui Academy. Jiang Lan also began directly refining Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow essence, which further purified his soul power and strengthened his body. 61 66 68

During preparations for an academy exchange with Blazing Fire, Godwind, and Plant Academies, Jiang Lan established his position among Yu Hairou, Shen Liuyu, Gu Qingbo, and Qiu Ruoshui by overwhelming their hostile dragon-blooded martial souls with his dragon’s might. He later helped them perform temporary True Dragon Transformations, enhancing their combat abilities and gradually influencing their martial souls toward evolution. 67 71 73

Jiang Lan accompanied the Tianshui team through its exchanges with Blazing Fire Academy and Godwind Academy. At Godwind Academy, Huo Wu redirected Feng Xiaotian’s pursuit toward a challenge against Jiang Lan; Jiang Lan entered the match as a Rank 33 Soul Elder against Feng Xiaotian’s Rank 34 cultivation. 88 91 92 93

During the team battle against Godwind Academy, Jiang Lan demonstrated large-scale water control by gathering Xue Wu’s rain into an enormous water sphere and directing the resulting torrent exclusively toward the opposing team. His third soul skill enhanced the team’s abilities, while his elemental control earned him the informal reputation of a “Water Sovereign.” 97 98

After the academy exchange, Shui Qinghan took Jiang Lan and several senior Soul Masters to the Great Star Dou Forest to hunt a high-level soul beast. Jiang Lan’s healing, restoration, defensive, and enhancement abilities made him essential to the expedition despite his comparatively low cultivation. During the journey, Shui Qinghan was forced to reveal the true extent of his abilities to Huo Yan, Feng Lingtian, and Yao Yu, who recognized Jiang Lan as a future leader of the younger generation. 102 103

In the Great Star Dou Forest, the group became involved in a conflict with members of the Clear Sky Sect. Tang Ling, an 89th-level Soul Douluo, attacked Jiang Lan after his Martial Soul Avatar was destroyed. Jiang Lan survived the assault, exploited Tang Ling’s weakened state and his own enhancement abilities, and killed him with a single punch. The group discovered four Soul Bones on Tang Ling’s body, suggesting that the Clear Sky Sect had been illegally hunting ten-thousand-year soul beasts, but concealed the matter to avoid retaliation. 105 106 107

After looting Tang Ling’s storage soul tool, Jiang Lan obtained the Haotian Nine Absolutes. He spent the following six months studying the techniques and adapting their principles to water and unarmed combat. This work eventually produced his own martial system, the Canglan Nine Styles. 110 115 126

Jiang Lan later joined Shui Qinghan’s sea expedition and helped the Purple Pearl Soul Hunting Group fight pirates and sea soul beasts. He developed a close and flirtatious relationship with Zi Zhenzhu, who invited him to join her group and offered to assist him with future sea voyages. 121 125 126 130

During the expedition, Jiang Lan assisted Yu Hairou in absorbing the soul ring of a 3,700-year Sea Flood Dragon. The ring caused her Coral Barracuda martial soul to evolve into the Advanced Dragon Son martial soul Chiwen. The group then consumed the Sea Flood Dragon’s meat and marrow as cultivation resources. 130

Jiang Lan subsequently hunted a 43,000-year Azure Abyss Dragon Kun. After killing it with the Ripple Formula and stacking both defensive aspects of Sea of Tides to their 300-percent maximum, he absorbed the beast’s soul ring in three hours and selected Starlight · Riding the Wind and Waves as his fourth soul skill. 135 138

Jiang Lan later led an assault against a Wolf Bandit stronghold after witnessing the bandits’ cruelty. He slaughtered most of the bandits, defeated their leader after it entered a berserk state comparable to a Six-Ring Soul Emperor, and obtained the ten-thousand-year Bloodlust Berserk Hurricane Right Leg Soul Bone. Because the soul bone was unsuitable for his current cultivation, he offered it to Shui Qinghan to exchange for resources. 143 144

Appearance

Before awakening his martial soul, Jiang Lan appears as a delicate six-year-old boy with black hair, black eyes, red lips, and a refined face. His body and appearance change dramatically when Lord of Tides possesses him. 1 2

  • Hair changes from black to icy blue, later becoming increasingly pale even outside full possession. 2 30
  • Eyes become clear blood-red. 2
  • Indigo dragon scales cover his hands, which develop sharp dragon claws and translucent webbing. 2
  • Develops an icy-blue horn and a finned dragon tail while possessed. 2
  • Dragonification greatly increases his size and musculature; by his Grand Soul Arena match, he reaches roughly 1.7 meters while possessed. 12 33
  • Usually conceals his identity in the Grand Soul Arena with a black robe and mask. 31
  • After absorbing his third soul ring, his hair becomes fully ice-blue and grows to shoulder length outside possession; his body develops the build and appearance of a much older youth. 59
  • His more advanced possession produces waist-length icy-blue hair, vertical silver dragon pupils within his crimson eyes, scales extending over his torso, elbow spikes, a four-meter wingspan of ice-blue dragon wings, and a dark-blue true-dragon horn crown. 71 93
  • In this advanced possession, Jiang Lan grows from under 1.7 meters to nearly 1.9 meters tall. 71 93
  • After activating his fourth soul ring, his body expands further and indigo dragon scales cover him from head to toe, making him nearly as tall as the Wolf Bandits he fights. 135 143

Personality

Jiang Lan initially reacts to transmigration with panic, sarcasm, and self-deprecating humor, but he rapidly becomes practical once he understands his circumstances. He is comfortable exploiting opportunities, whether that means accepting Shui Qinghan as his master immediately, buying weathered whale glue before its value becomes public, or selecting the most effective skills from his martial soul’s inherited pools. 1 3 7

He is cautious with dangerous information and follows Shui Qinghan’s advice to conceal the true effects of his soul skills. Although he often presents himself as an obedient child, he retains an adult’s perspective, uses prior knowledge strategically, and can deliberately influence others’ feelings when it benefits their shared goals. 8 18 30

Jiang Lan values the security and affection Shui Qinghan gives him as family. He reciprocates by sharing information on whale glue, the Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow, and soul-core condensation rather than keeping these opportunities for himself. 10 17 18 35 36

He is diligent and increasingly urgent about becoming stronger, believing that Tianshui Academy must prepare for future continent-wide dangers. This urgency motivates his insistence on a ten-thousand-year third soul ring despite Shui Qinghan’s concerns. 57 59

Despite his exceptional strength, Jiang Lan generally remains respectful toward Shui Qinghan and attentive to his senior sisters. He is uncomfortable with being treated as a political resource or thrust into romantic disputes, but he continues to help his companions cultivate and evolve their martial souls. 67 74 77 91

Jiang Lan is inventive rather than dependent on inherited abilities. After obtaining the Haotian Nine Absolutes, he spends six months adapting its principles to water manipulation and unarmed combat, eventually creating the Canglan Nine Styles. 110 115 126

He is capable of extreme violence when confronting people he considers irredeemably evil. His massacre of the Wolf Bandits is driven by moral outrage over their treatment of their victims, and he feels no guilt over killing the bandits because he regards them as deserving punishment. 128 143 144

Abilities & Skills

Lord of Tides · Starlight Ruth King

Jiang Lan’s beast martial soul is a water-attributed true dragon originating from his former game character’s divine pet. Its noble bloodline naturally suppresses weaker water and dragon-type martial souls. 1 2

  • Grants early dragonification normally associated with much higher-ranked dragon soul masters. 12
  • Enhances his physical strength, durability, swimming ability, and compatibility with cold water. 8 14 24
  • Allows him to breathe underwater and move through water with virtually no resistance. 24
  • Its soul rings grant access to skill pools, allowing Jiang Lan to choose compatible skills rather than receiving a random ability. 5 29
  • Possesses an ultimate attribute, causing Jiang Lan’s soul power to become unusually dense after Rank 30 while also slowing his ordinary cultivation speed before Rank 70. 60
  • Contains innate spiritual defense: the sacred dragon within Jiang Lan’s Spiritual Sea destroys invading spiritual attacks and can nullify the soul shock from a ten-thousand-year soul ring. 57 59
  • Develops increasingly complete true-dragon features, including wings, torso scales, elbow spikes, and a horn crown after Jiang Lan obtains his third soul ring. 71 93
  • Its dragon’s might suppresses hostile dragon-blooded martial souls so severely that their users may be unable to maintain possession or mobilize soul power. Those who approach Jiang Lan with goodwill are not subject to the same suppression. 71
  • Its aura nourishes water-attributed and dragon-type martial souls, increasing their cultivation speed, strengthening them in battle, and potentially inducing evolution toward dragon-type martial souls. 47 48 76
  • Its bloodline can induce favorable feelings and a sense of closeness in those whose martial souls receive its nourishment, although this effect is described as one-sided enhancement rather than direct mind control. 48

Sea of Tides

Jiang Lan’s innate domain creates a water-blue field that combines offense, defense, healing, recovery, and elemental protection. 5

  • Renders attribute-based attacks ineffective against Jiang Lan; recognized allies within the domain also benefit from its elemental protection. 5 12
  • Doubles Jiang Lan’s attack power and causes his attacks to deal an additional 50% damage against enemies inside the domain. 5
  • Grants allies a 50% damage increase, manifested as stronger ice and water soul skills for Shui Bing'er and Shui Yue'er. 12 14
  • Constantly heals recognized allies and restores their soul power. 5 14
  • Raises Jiang Lan’s physical and energy defenses by 50% whenever he is attacked, stacking up to 300%. 5
  • Protects companions from the lethal cold of the Far North’s frigid springs and the Ice Marrow Cave. 23 25
  • Allows Jiang Lan to rapidly restore the soul power he expends while helping others maintain True Dragon Transformations. 77
  • Can sustain Jiang Lan through severe injuries and restore him during battle, allowing him to continue fighting after suffering fractures and extensive bodily damage. 107
  • Its defensive, healing, and enhancement effects remain useful even during battles involving high-level Soul Douluos and ten-thousand-year soul beasts. 102 103 135

First Soul Skill: Flash Strike

Derived from Starlight Strike, Flash Strike is Jiang Lan’s thousand-year first soul skill. It combines mobility, disruption, and resistance to control effects. 5 6

  • Enables teleportation and high-speed movement. 6 13
  • Can remove enemy enhancement effects and weaken their skill power. 6
  • Can grant Jiang Lan immunity to abnormal statuses, debuffs, and ability-reduction effects for two minutes. 6 12
  • The additional effect can be activated by striking an object that lacks an enhancement state, allowing Jiang Lan to repeatedly protect himself from most control-type soul skills while he retains soul power. 12 13
  • Does not completely negate prison-type control skills such as Ice Prison or Water Prison, though Jiang Lan can often teleport out of them. 13
  • Can remove the enhancement effects of powerful opponents, including the attack boosts of an Eight-Ring Soul Douluo, reducing their offensive output during the skill’s duration. 107

Second Soul Skill: Restraint

Jiang Lan’s second skill, selected as Starlight and referred to as Restraint or Sealing Jutsu: Absorption Seal, manifests as an invisible shield. 29 30

  • Absorbs physical and energy attacks and converts their power into Jiang Lan’s soul power. 29 30
  • Can allow him to absorb attacks from assault-type Soul Kings and below without injury at his current physical level. 30
  • Absorbing attacks from a six-ring Soul Emperor remains possible but risks severe damage to his meridians and internal organs from excessive energy. 30
  • Lets him use absorbed power against opponents, as demonstrated when he neutralizes Tie Lin’s charging attack in the Grand Soul Arena. 30 33
  • Can withstand the growing force of Feng Xiaotian’s Gale Demon Wolf Twenty-Four Consecutive Slashes, storing an amount of power approaching a Soul King’s reserves by the final strike. 94
  • Can absorb the claws, wind blades, and physical attacks of large groups of Wolf Bandits without injuring Jiang Lan. 143

Third Soul Skill: Starlight · Water and Sky as One

Jiang Lan selected Starlight · Water and Sky as One from Starlight King’s skill pool after absorbing his ten-thousand-year third soul ring. It is a group enhancement skill combining cleansing, healing, and counterattack effects. 59

  • Removes crowd-control effects and other abnormal statuses from its target. 59
  • Negates and reflects abnormal statuses inflicted upon the protected target. 59
  • Removes effects that reduce a target’s abilities and can provide healing support. 59
  • Can restore an ally to peak condition regardless of a difference in cultivation level, while also restoring soul power. 102 103
  • Provides stronger enhancement when Jiang Lan or an ally has suffered severe injuries or greatly depleted their soul power. 102 107
  • Further reinforces Jiang Lan’s status as a natural counter to control-system soul masters. 59

Fourth Soul Skill: Starlight · Riding the Wind and Waves

Jiang Lan selected Starlight · Riding the Wind and Waves from Starlight King’s skill pool after absorbing the 43,000-year Azure Abyss Dragon Kun soul ring. 135 138

  • Provides a massive all-attribute enhancement, with the effect becoming even stronger while Jiang Lan’s health remains above half. 135
  • Doubles Jiang Lan’s attack damage for approximately two minutes. 135
  • Allows his attacks to ignore 25% of an opponent’s physical and energy defenses. 135
  • Nullifies enemy enhancement effects. 135
  • Combines with Sea of Tides and the passive effects of Water and Sky as One to produce an enormous overall increase in Jiang Lan’s damage and combat statistics. 107 135

Water Control and Spiritual Healing

Jiang Lan can directly manipulate available water with his martial soul, using rain created by Xue Wu’s soul skill to form destructive waves in their Raging Waves Combo. 47 57

  • Can control water for practical purposes, including drying soaked clothing. 47
  • Can manipulate rainwater before it reaches the ground, turning it into a large-scale wave attack. 57
  • Can gather enormous quantities of rainwater into a suspended sphere and release it as a precisely directed torrent. 97 98
  • Uses the purifying and healing aspects of his water element to treat spiritual-power backlash. 58
  • Can heal physical injuries through direct contact and water-element energy, including muscle damage, swelling, bruising, and severe battle wounds. 107 121
  • His healing ability may enable companions with sufficient physical tolerance to attempt higher-age soul rings by protecting or restoring their spiritual condition. 58

True Dragon Transformation

By merging his soul power with compatible water- and dragon-blooded martial souls, Jiang Lan can temporarily trigger dragon-like transformations in his companions. 73

  • Grants transformed allies dragon scales, enhanced defense, improved speed, and increased physical strength. 73
  • Can alter the nature and power of a transformed ally’s soul skills, as demonstrated by Shen Liuyu’s Dragon Body and Dragon’s Fury. 80
  • Gradually influences compatible martial souls toward mutation or evolution into sub-dragon and potentially true-dragon martial souls. 73 76 81
  • Requires Jiang Lan to supply soul power, though Sea of Tides allows him to restore the energy spent and prolong the process. 77
  • Assisted Yu Hairou’s Coral Barracuda martial soul in evolving into the Advanced Dragon Son martial soul Chiwen after she absorbed a Sea Flood Dragon soul ring. 130
  • Can be applied to Zi Zhenzhu, restoring her injuries and soul power while temporarily enhancing her sub-dragon martial soul. 125

Canglan Nine Styles

The Canglan Nine Styles are Jiang Lan’s self-created martial techniques, developed by adapting the Haotian Nine Absolutes to water manipulation and unarmed combat. He created them after six months of study and experimentation. 110 115 126

  • Lock Formula — Forms chains from seawater that bind and suppress opponents, including Soul Kings. 126
  • Flow Formula — Disperses and redirects incoming force through water, neutralizing attacks such as poisonous needles. 126
  • Ripple Formula — Creates vibrating spheres or concentrated shock forces that destroy incoming attacks and shatter an opponent’s internal organs. It can also kill powerful soul beasts with a palm strike. 126 135
  • Pierce Formula — Concentrates water into an extremely destructive penetrating attack, including a single lethal droplet capable of killing a fleeing Soul King. 126
  • The remaining forms are part of the same water-based system but have not yet been fully described. 126

Resource Knowledge

Jiang Lan possesses knowledge from his former life and what he claims are bloodline memories, allowing him to identify rare cultivation resources and their uses. 17

  • Identifies weathered thousand-year whale glue as a physique-strengthening and foundation-stabilizing resource. 7 8 9
  • Locates the approximate site of the Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow Cave near Dragon City. 17 23 26
  • Explains that Ice Extreme Divine Crystals can amplify ice-element soul skills but require ultimate-ice soul power to mine. 24
  • Introduces Shui Qinghan to the concept of condensing solidified soul power into a soul core. 35 36
  • Recognizes the conditions under which Shui Yue'er’s martial soul may evolve toward a dragon type, including cultivation near him and the absorption of high-quality whale-type soul rings. 55
  • Identifies Huo Wu’s potential for a Second Awakening and the possibility that it could develop her martial soul toward Ultimate Fire. 88
  • Recognizes Yu Hairou’s evolved martial soul as Chiwen, a Dragon Son martial soul, after her Sea Flood Dragon soul-ring absorption. 130
  • Adapts the Haotian Nine Absolutes into the Canglan Nine Styles. 110 126

Cultivation Resources

  • Thousand-year whale glue — Purchased for 300 Gold Soul Coins and refined to strengthen Jiang Lan’s body and solidify his soul power foundation. 7 9
  • Ten-thousand-year whale glue — Further raises his physical endurance, enabling a projected second-ring absorption limit near 5,000 years before he exceeds it with Sea of Tides. 21 22 29
  • Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow — A powerful ice-attributed cultivation treasure found through Jiang Lan’s guidance; he later cultivates within its cave and directly refines its essence to purify his soul power, strengthen his body, and raise his cultivation by approximately one level per month. 17 26 38 68 115
  • Starlight Blue Jewel Bracelet — A storage bracelet gifted to Jiang Lan by Shui Qinghan, used to keep Ten-Thousand-Year Ice Marrow and other possessions. 49 68
  • Black robe and mask — Used to hide his identity during Grand Soul Arena matches. 31
  • Haotian Nine Absolutes — A manual recovered from Tang Ling’s storage soul tool and later adapted into Jiang Lan’s Canglan Nine Styles. 107 110 126
  • Bloodlust Berserk Hurricane Right Leg Soul Bone — A ten-thousand-year soul bone dropped by the Wolf Bandit leader. Jiang Lan gives it to Shui Qinghan so it can be exchanged for cultivation resources because its age is unsuitable for his current absorption. 144
  • Sea Flood Dragon meat, blood, marrow, and scales — Used as cultivation food, medicinal material, and potential armor material after Yu Hairou absorbs its soul ring. 130
  • Evil Spirit Orca meat — Consumed by Jiang Lan and his companions to strengthen their bodies and soul power during the sea expedition. 135

  • Shui Qinghan — Master and maternal guardian. She admits Jiang Lan as her disciple to keep him at Tianshui Academy and treats him as family; Jiang Lan supports her pursuit of the Title Douluo realm with rare resources and cultivation knowledge. She later reaches the Title Douluo realm and organizes students around Jiang Lan’s martial-soul abilities to strengthen the academy.
