Background / History
Mu En served as Shrek Academy's dean and Sea God Pavilion's master. Connected to the Golden Tree, he safeguarded Shrek for centuries and used the tree's power as both a defensive foundation and a cultivation resource for the academy's disciples 23 28.
His later years were marked by severe decline. Poison from his battle with Du Busi had eroded him, leaving his life force faint and forcing him to rely on the Golden Tree to survive; leaving Sea God Island would further weaken him and accelerate his death 23 31 43.
Mu En recognized Ye Ming's exceptional potential early, choosing not to investigate the origin of his ten-thousand-year soul rings. He opposed prematurely elevating Ye Ming, instead planning for him to temper himself against Shrek's future Seven Monsters 12.
After Ye Ming, Gu Yuena, and Wang Qiuer killed Ming Lei Douluo during the Holy Spirit Cult's assault, Mu En authorized their extended cultivation within the Golden Tree and elevated them as priority core disciples 23 27 28. During their seclusion, he personally taught Ye Ming three self-created soul skills and allowed the trio to absorb an immense reserve of Golden Tree energy 29 30.
When the Holy Spirit Cult attacked in the Mingdou Mountains, Mu En knowingly left Sea God Island with the Golden Tree Spirit, treating the intervention as his final battle. He killed Abomination Douluo, mortally wounded Nightmare Douluo, and trapped Zhongli Wu's group in Dragon Emperor's Domain-Shaking Realm; Zhongli Wu escaped only by sacrificing his subordinates 43 44.
Before his death, Mu En publicly defended Ye Ming against Zhongli Wu's accusation that he was a transformed soul beast. He entrusted Ye Ming with a dragon-related treasure and asked him to preserve Shrek Academy should they ever become enemies 44. Later, Gu Yuena discovered that the item—subsequently called a Dragon Core—contained concealed Golden Tree energy and a fragment of Mu En's soul, which she believed could influence or control Ye Ming after absorption 46.
Appearance
Mu En is depicted as an elderly, hunched man with deep wrinkles, half-lidded eyes, and a frail life aura. Even in physical decline, golden flames can burn in his eyes when he fights 12 43.
- Usually reclines in a chair within Sea God Pavilion. 28 31
- Carries the Golden Tree Spirit during his final battle. 43
- Appears increasingly aged and weakened after the Golden Tree cultivation period. 31
- Straightens his posture noticeably when he leaves Sea God Island for battle. 43
Personality
Mu En presents himself as patient, perceptive, and devoted to Shrek Academy's future. He prioritizes nurturing exceptional students while warning against forcing their development too quickly 12 29. He respects that Ye Ming, Gu Yuena, and Wang Qiuer have personal secrets and tells them that their future paths are their own to choose 29.
He is also willing to make extreme sacrifices for the academy. Despite knowing departure from Sea God Island would hasten his death, he personally intervenes against the Holy Spirit Cult to protect Shrek's students 43.
His apparent trust in Ye Ming is later complicated by the Dragon Core's concealed soul fragment and Golden Tree energy, which Gu Yuena identifies as a hidden contingency intended to affect Ye Ming's body and thoughts 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Recognition of Ye Ming
Mu En witnesses Ye Ming's power against Yan Shaozhe and identifies him as an extraordinary talent. He declines to investigate Ye Ming's unusual soul rings and chooses a gradual path for his development rather than immediate promotion 12.
Golden Tree Cultivation
Following the Holy Spirit Cult's first attack, Mu En rewards Ye Ming, Gu Yuena, and Wang Qiuer for their role in defending Shrek. He grants them access to Sea God Pavilion, guides their cultivation, and teaches Ye Ming his self-created techniques 27 28 29.
Decline and Final Battle
As his life force worsens, Mu En remains Shrek's ultimate deterrent. He leaves Sea God Island during the Mingdou Mountains crisis, annihilates several Holy Spirit Cult elders, and spends the remainder of his strength defending the academy and its students 31 43 44.
Dragon Core Contingency
Mu En's posthumous influence becomes suspect when Gu Yuena finds a fragment of his soul hidden within the Dragon Core given to Ye Ming. This discovery reframes his final gift as a possible means of surveillance, control, or reincarnation 45 46.
