Background

In the Divine Realm, Tang San protects Tang Wulin, whose body contains the Golden Dragon King's divine core, and attempts to dissuade Dai Yuhao from rebelling against the realm's defenses. Yuhao interprets Tang San's close protection of the child as distrust toward him. 1

Tang San is later described as possessing both the Sea God and Asura God divine positions, placing him beyond Huo Yuhao's former first-class godhood. 4 In the past-era storyline, however, his divine sense has possessed his younger body for less than two months; the divine artifacts that returned with him are unsuitable for early use. 20

His returned memories allow him to anticipate major events, including Oscar reaching Rank 30, the appearance of the Man-Faced Demon Spider, and the opportunity to acquire the Eight Spider Spears. He joins Shrek partly to preserve and shape the future paths of Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, Oscar, and Ning Rongrong. 20 23

Personality

Tang San is calculating and strongly future-oriented. He waits for events to unfold in a favorable order, regards Huo Yuhao's soul-tool knowledge as a threat to his era, and considers provoking Spirit Hall into targeting Yuhao by spreading claims about a hundred-thousand-year first soul ring. 20

He is fiercely protective of Xiao Wu and becomes increasingly unstable after her disappearance. He disregards Zhao Wuji's orders, pressures Oscar into producing Mushroom Sausages, and pursues the Titan Giant Ape's trail alone. 37 38 After learning that Huo Yuhao was likely involved, he openly declares him an enemy. 38

Despite this ruthlessness, Tang San values allies he believes will be useful in the future. He shields Oscar during soul-ring absorption, identifies Oscar as an indispensable future ally, and later apologizes to Zhao Wuji before leaving Shrek temporarily. 23 40
