Background / History

Lupin was bitten by a werewolf when he was young and became a werewolf himself. During his Hogwarts years, he was friends with James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. The four created the Marauder's Map: Lupin was Moony, James was Prongs, Sirius was Padfoot, and Peter was Wormtail. James and Sirius secretly became Animagi in their fifth year so they could accompany Lupin during his transformations. 115 151 162

After Hogwarts, Lupin joined the Order of the Phoenix with his friends. Peter's betrayal of the Potters and Sirius's imprisonment fractured the group; Lupin believed Sirius guilty for eleven years and later apologized after Peter was exposed. 162

Before meeting Wade Grey, Lupin spent years wandering between insecure jobs. He was visibly impoverished, wearing patched robes and appearing far older than he was. 81 112 Wade hired him as both an agent and private tutor, offering thirty Galleons per week—enough for Lupin to afford Wolfsbane Potion regularly and improve his living conditions. 86 115

Appearance

Lupin is a brown-haired wizard whose hair had already begun to show white strands when Wade first met him. Though still young, hardship initially left him haggard and prematurely aged. 81

  • White strands mixed through brown hair. 81
  • Originally wore severely worn wizarding robes covered in patches. 81
  • Later adopted presentable dark-blue robes; much of his exhaustion gave way to a steadier, faintly melancholy demeanor. 112
  • His werewolf form has fine gray fur and clawed limbs. 347

Personality

Lupin is gentle, considerate, and strongly guided by responsibility. He treats Wade as a person rather than merely an employer, offers advice without demanding access to Wade's secrets, and supports Wade's decisions once they are made. 112 178

His experiences with prejudice and poverty make him especially compassionate toward other werewolves. He helps law-abiding werewolves find work, investigates Will's disappearance, and remains troubled by the Ministry's treatment of werewolves. 288 319 446

Lupin can be anxious and self-blaming when those in his care are endangered. He panicked after Wade's first Animagus transformation and later blamed himself for failing to protect Wade from Grindelwald's abduction. 241 430 Despite this, he can act decisively in dangerous situations and accepts personal consequences to protect others. 151 180

Abilities & Skills

Werewolf Transformation

Lupin transforms into a werewolf during the full moon. Wolfsbane Potion allows him to retain his reason while transformed, though the condition and its aftermath once left him weak and ill. 115 291

  • Has greater stamina than ordinary wizards when adequately supplied with Wolfsbane Potion and nutrition. 577
  • Can be forcibly transformed outside the full moon through injected lycanthropy hormones. 347 350
  • Repeated exposure to the hormone may cause a faster, more complete transformation and potentially prevent recovery. 372
  • Takes precautions to isolate himself before full moons so he will not endanger others. 115

Patronus Charm

Lupin can conjure a corporeal silver-white wolf Patronus. 215

  • Demonstrates the spell for Harry and Wade during their Patronus training. 215
  • Teaches that a Patronus is sustained through happy memories, hope, and belief. 215 216
  • Helps instruct Harry in overcoming his fear of Dementors through Boggart-based practice. 414

Defensive and Practical Magic

Lupin is an experienced field wizard capable of shielding companions, dueling, memory modification, and covert travel.

  • Stunned Peter Pettigrew after his Veritaserum interrogation. 150
  • Shielded Wade from an attacking enchanted chain in the Black Lake cave. 190
  • Used the Obliviate Charm on Muggle villagers to protect Wade and Hogwarts-related secrets. 180
  • Uses Apparition and the Vanishing Cabinet for transport during investigations. 150 500
  • Understands Occlumency's role in resisting the Imperius Curse, possession, and Veritaserum. 132

Magical Instruction

Lupin serves as Wade's private teacher and sets ethical limits on what he will teach.

  • Teaches advanced magic through regular written lessons when Wade is at Hogwarts. 112
  • Agreed to teach Fiendfyre theory, but proceeded cautiously and withheld practical instruction while Wade studied the spell's risks. 157
  • Refuses to teach the Unforgivable Curses, arguing that Dark Magic erodes its user and carries severe risks. 86 132
  • Guided Wade's Animagus training and emphasized preserving one's human awareness during transformation. 241

Marauder's Map

Lupin was one of the Marauder's Map's creators during his school years. The map displays the real-time locations and names of people inside Hogwarts. 135 151

  • Helped create the map alongside James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. 151
  • Revealed the Marauders' identities when Peter was captured. 151

Relationships

  • Wade Grey — Employer, student, and trusted companion. Wade hired Lupin as his agent and tutor, while Lupin provides magical instruction, protection, and moral guidance. 85 86 178
  • Harry Potter — Son of Lupin's late friends James and Lily. Lupin takes Harry into his home, openly reveals his lycanthropy to him, and helps him train against Dementors. 115 414
  • Sirius Black — Fellow Marauder and lifelong friend. Lupin mistakenly doubted Sirius for eleven years, then reunited with him after Sirius's acquittal. 162
  • James Potter — Former school friend and Marauder. James became an Animagus partly to keep Lupin company during werewolf transformations. 162
  • Peter Pettigrew — Former friend and Marauder whose betrayal devastated Lupin's circle. Lupin reacts with rage and disgust upon seeing Wormtail alive. 148 151
  • Albus Dumbledore — Former Order ally and trusted authority. Lupin performs secret tasks under Dumbledore's direction and seeks his help during crises. 414 481
  • Mabel — A girl Lupin cared for as family. He considers his home hers, worries about her well-being, and is deeply saddened when she leaves for a new family. 483
  • Will — A law-abiding werewolf whom Lupin helped train and secure employment at Aslan's Magic Workshop. 288
  • Hagrid — Friend and occasional collaborator. Lupin supports Hagrid during his early teaching difficulties and discreetly questions him during an investigation. 340

Search for Wade After Grindelwald's Abduction

Trivia

  • Lupin's wolf Patronus reflects his growing willingness to acknowledge his werewolf identity rather than avoid it. 215
  • He initially declined Dumbledore's invitation to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts because his work for Wade, concern for Sirius, and ongoing investigations left him unwilling to withdraw from the outside world. 418
