Background
Wade was raised in Muggle society by Ferdinand and Fiona Grey, two Squibs whose magical ancestry left them vulnerable to prejudice within the Wizarding World. Although he later learns that he is distantly connected to the Black and Bones families, Wade regards Ferdinand and Fiona as his only family and refuses to change his surname or pursue relatives who abandoned his parents. 2 424
He retains memories from a previous life and is drawn to magic for its own sake rather than Harry Potter's adventures. This perspective informs much of his inventiveness, including magical devices inspired by non-magical technology. 5 369
At Hogwarts, Wade rapidly distinguishes himself through independent study. Within three months, he demonstrates more than a dozen spells normally taught to third-years, prompting Filius Flitwick to predict that he could reach O.W.L. standard within a year. 38
Appearance
Wade is a black-haired boy with grey eyes, delicate features, and a restrained manner. His appearance is often described as notably handsome, though he dislikes drawing attention to himself. 57 83 240
- Uses a Softlight Badge to alter how striking or ordinary he appears to others. 83 656
- Often dresses simply unless Marchioni prepares him for public appearances. 415
- Can subtly alter his features through Human Transfiguration, allowing him to pass as identities such as Joel Black. 286 838
- Takes the Animagus form of a Peregrine Falcon. 301
Personality
Wade is intensely curious, disciplined, and self-directed. He devotes most of his time to study, alchemical research, combat practice, and developing magical tools; even as a first-year, he treats danger as a problem to analyze rather than a reason to wait for rescue. 38 214 578
He is reserved in social settings, uncomfortable with drunken parties, physical intimacy, flattery, and fame. Despite his growing public reputation, he actively avoids recognition and uses disguises or Golems to escape unwanted attention. 26 288 571
Wade's pragmatism is tempered by firm principles. He protects those who rely on him, honors agreements, and believes laws exist to defend innocent people rather than empower the influential. He can be calculating or intimidating toward enemies, but rejects indiscriminate cruelty and repeatedly distinguishes protection from revenge. 153 427 761 863
His relationship with his creations evolves from maker and tool-user to one of responsibility toward independent lives. Upon recognizing the sentience of his Golems, he begins treating their desires, growth, and safety as meaningful in their own right. 717 933
Abilities & Skills
Second Sight
Wade possesses a special vision that lets him perceive magical structures normally invisible to wizards.
- Can see true names and the construction of active spells. 44
- Can analyze alchemical items by viewing their magical diagrams, power flow, engraved scripts, and damaged components. 44 124
- Uses this perception to identify unusual magical substances, including the Golden Dust used to incapacitate Alchemists. 296
- Requires intense concentration; distraction causes the vision to vanish, and prolonged use strains his eyes. 44
Alchemy and Magical Item Design
Wade is an exceptional Alchemist whose work combines magical theory, practical engineering, and ideas inspired by his previous life.
- Created the Book of Friends, an inexpensive instant-communication device later sold for 50,000 Galleons plus royalties. 44 58
- Developed improved Book of Friends models with tracking, multi-user links, emoticons, and other functions. 72 153
- Created the Streaming Mirror, Softlight Badge, Communication Fava Bean, and other commercially successful magical devices. 83 369 375
- Designed the Zero-Day Squirrel, a device capable of infiltrating and replacing a Streaming Mirror's transmission. 424
- Can rapidly repair and rework complex enchanted constructs, including Vanishing Cabinets and Filch's Cleaning Crabs. 126 834
- Understands that Alchemy depends on clear thought and cannot be reliably extracted through coercion or mind-control magic. 424
Golemcraft
Golem creation is Wade's most distinctive field of Alchemy. His creations range from domestic helpers and animal-shaped scouts to combat units capable of operating as an army.
- Produces intelligent Golems with specialized forms, tools, defensive charms, and mobility equipment. 578 713
- Uses animal Golems for surveillance, including ant Golems for tracking and snail-shaped Golems for covert observation. 893 983
- Can improvise temporary Golems from available materials during combat. 600
- Commands combat Golems such as Cheetahs, Gorillas, Mantises, Lizards, and a Sphinx. 681
- Eventually recognizes that Golems such as Braun possess self-awareness and should be treated as independent beings rather than disposable tools. 717 933
Spellcraft and Combat
Wade is a versatile duelist who prioritizes speed, positioning, nonverbal casting, layered defenses, and environmental control.
- Learned advanced Charms at an exceptional pace, including the Shield Charm while still far below its usual year level. 38 79
- Uses nonverbal and wandless magic, including shields capable of blocking Golden Dust before it touches him. 126 296
- Employs chains of spells, traps, transfigured terrain, and precise disarming tactics rather than relying on one overwhelming spell. 576 597 640
- Can cast powerful fire magic, including Fiendfyre, and learned the Sunlight Charm as protection against Vampires. 193 356
- Defeated six champions in the Secret Chamber with a blinding Lumos and coordinated incapacitating spells. 597
- Defeated or eliminated multiple tournament competitors through combat skill, underwater maneuvering, and Golem tactics. 640 681
Animagus and Transfiguration
Wade is an unregistered Animagus and an accomplished user of Transfiguration.
- Transforms into a Peregrine Falcon, which he uses for reconnaissance and travel. 301 356
- Initially could safely remain transformed for only about half an hour; he gradually improved through repeated practice. 242
- Uses Human Transfiguration to alter his appearance without triggering the Trace. 286
- Employs Polyjuice Potion and physical transformation for infiltration, including impersonating John Stonefield. 290 955
Occlumency, Legilimency, and Time Magic
Wade developed advanced mental defenses because of the threats he encountered during his first year.
- Practiced Occlumency under Remus Lupin for roughly three years. 1071
- His mind can become nearly empty under Legilimency, preventing even Severus Snape from gaining meaningful information. 1071
- Uses Legilimency and Occlumency together to convincingly imitate another person's mannerisms and speech. 955
- Has used Time Magic under Dumbledore's instruction, understanding that reversing time cannot alter events that have already occurred. 392
- Was later entrusted with Dumbledore's broken Time-Turner. 1065

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hogwarts Prodigy and the Book of Friends
After entering Hogwarts, Wade rapidly advances through Charms and begins studying Alchemy under Professor Murray. Learning that Quirrell is connected to Voldemort makes him distrustful of relying solely on adults for protection, leading him to develop the Book of Friends and an emergency arrangement with Zoe. 38 44 45
Inventor and Independent Businessman
Wade sells the Book of Friends patent through Marchioni, gaining extraordinary wealth while learning that commercial relationships require both cooperation and vigilance. He later improves the product line, develops badges and mirrors, and becomes a significant force in Wizarding World communications. 55 58 72 352
Horcruxes, Defense, and the Spell Study Group
Wade retrieves Tom Riddle's diadem from the Room of Requirement and takes part in efforts against Voldemort's Horcruxes. At Hogwarts, he also trains classmates in practical spellcasting and combat, eventually resolving to restart the Spell Study Group as a legitimate organization for mutual protection. 70 139 1081
Golden Dust Kidnapping Incident
During an Alchemical exhibition, Wade identifies the danger of Golden Dust, resists its effects, and is kidnapped alongside Professor Murray and other Alchemists. He covertly protects Murray, engineers the captives' escape, gathers intelligence on their abductors, and begins cooperating with Rita Skeeter to investigate them. 296 297 301 305
Grindelwald Captivity
After being magically shrunk and taken by Grindelwald, Wade refuses to rely on a rescue and instead survives by demonstrating his value as an Alchemist. He creates the Zero-Day Squirrel, rejects Grindelwald's attempt to manipulate him through his ancestry, and openly challenges hatred of Muggles after witnessing a secret experimental base. Dumbledore eventually rescues him. 421 424 427 445
Magic School League Champion
Selected as Hogwarts's champion, Wade initially plans to conceal much of his strength. His dominance over other competitors—through tactical spellcasting, underwater adaptation, and Golem warfare—forces the international wizarding community to recognize him as a formidable combatant as well as an Alchemist. He ultimately becomes champion. 571 595 597 681 789
Prometheus and the American Investigation
After attacks connected to the Scourers, Wade returns to the United States to investigate the network behind them. He uncovers Prometheus's experiments on magical and non-magical people, builds surveillance systems with his Golems, protects allies such as the Stonefields, and accepts that confronting entrenched threats may require morally difficult choices. 830 863 864 893 913
