Leadership
| Leader | Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha Fugaku | Clan Head | Led the clan during its dispute with Konoha; accepted death at Itachi's hands during the attempted massacre. 27 177 |
| Uchiha Hanjō | Clan Head | Unanimously elected after Fugaku's death; had already organized resistance during the attack on the clan. 218 |
| Uchiha Xuanyu | Young Clan Leader / leading figure | Exercises major influence over clan policy and receives the clan's public loyalty. 217 855 |
Background
The clan is one of Konoha's founding shinobi clans, yet its standing steadily declined after being pushed away from the village's political center. By the early story, most Uchiha receive little work beyond the Police Force, leaving the clan financially dependent on its limited police income and, increasingly, Uchiha Hanjō's support. 9 26
The clan highly values strength, a culture that leaves merchants such as Hanjō marginalized despite his financial support. This prejudice is starkly shown when the elders label his newborn, double-pupiled son Xuanyu, a “monster” and demand his death; Hanjō refuses and protects him. 1
Institutions
| Institution | Function | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha Police Force | Public security and law enforcement | Historically the clan's economic and political foundation. Konoha demands that it surrender half its management rights, intensifying clan resentment. 25 26 |
| Uchiha Merchant Guild | Trade, logistics, and employment | Founded and expanded by Hanjō; it employs disheartened Uchiha and eventually spreads across most of the Shinobi World. 28 346 |
| Uchiha Ninja Training Class | Clan-wide ninja education | Established by Hanjō after the attack on the clan; civilians and shinobi under twenty may train there to improve collective survival. 219 |
Abilities & Traits
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan's defining kekkei genkai. It grants its wielders powerful perception, copying, and genjutsu potential; individual members may awaken different abilities as their eyes develop. 17 111
- The clan regards the Sharingan as a source of “infinite possibilities,” with Mangekyō Sharingan awakening granting exceptional eye abilities. 17
- During the Root assault, several clansmen awaken or rapidly advance their Sharingan under the pressure of defending their families. 196
- Xuanyu argues that the Sharingan's evolution stems from profound love and grief rather than inherent hatred; this view is later accepted by Itachi. 795
- The clan treats threats against an Uchiha's eyes as an extreme provocation. 967
Genjutsu
Uchiha genjutsu is a major source of the clan's battlefield reputation.
- Shisui's Mangekyō ability can alter a target's thoughts, although it consumes substantial eye power and requires recovery after use. 143
- Shisui's advanced genjutsu can overcome techniques designed to suppress Uchiha illusion users. 801
- Itachi's Mangekyō genjutsu remains feared even among Akatsuki members. 664 665
Combat Adaptation
The clan's strength is not limited to elite prodigies. After the attempted extermination, Hanjō moves to train civilians as well as shinobi, aiming to ensure that future attacks cannot leave noncombatants helpless. 219
- Uchiha civilians and genin fight alongside experienced ninja during Root's assault. 196
- The Uchiha Police Force later earns civilian support through fair arrests and by involving civilians in legal proceedings. 591
Story Role / Major Arcs
Police Force Crisis
Konoha uses complaints about supposedly violent police enforcement to demand half of the Police Force's management rights. The demand fractures the clan between compromise and resistance: Fugaku ultimately agrees to relinquish authority and have clansmen apologize, while many Uchiha view the decision as humiliation and abandonment. 24 26 27 28
Hanjō turns this crisis into an economic alternative by recruiting dissatisfied clansmen into the Merchant Guild. The guild's security work proves profitable, reducing the clan's reliance on police wages. 8 12 28
Coup Tensions and the Attempted Massacre
As conflict with Konoha escalates, Fugaku assigns surveillance tasks to clan members and prepares for a coup. Shisui instead proposes using his Mangekyō ability to change Fugaku's mind, but Hiruzen and Danzō decide Shisui's power makes the entire clan too dangerous to tolerate. 140 143
Itachi agrees to assist Hiruzen's extermination plan in exchange for Sasuke's safety and enlists masked Obito/Tobi as an accomplice. Danzō deploys 120 Root ninja around the clan grounds while Itachi begins killing clan leaders and civilians. 172 173 175 177 178
The extermination fails to destroy the clan completely. Xuanyu, Xia, Fuling, and other defenders intervene, while Uchiha civilians and ninja resist Root's attack. The clan nevertheless suffers severe losses, with 140 Uchiha reported dead after the crisis. 179 196 213 219
Rebuilding Under Hanjō
Following Fugaku's death, the clan elects Hanjō as Clan Head. His first major policy is the Uchiha Ninja Training Class, intended to transform the clan into a population capable of defending itself rather than leaving civilians dependent on a few elite fighters. 218 219
Under Hanjō, the Merchant Guild becomes prosperous enough that the clan no longer accepts Konoha missions. The clan maintains control over its half of Konoha's police jurisdiction while building trade networks beyond the village. 346 797
Break with the Sarutobi Clan
Xuanyu's investigation into missing civilians is obstructed by Sarutobi Asuma, prompting the Uchiha and Sarutobi clans to formally bar one another from their respective jurisdictions. 542 557
The Aburame and Hyūga clans openly align with the Uchiha, shifting Konoha's balance of power. In response, Hiruzen, Danzō, Homura, and Koharu prepare another secret extermination plan using Impure World Reincarnation. 576 577 580
War and Political Ascendancy
The Uchiha expose Hiruzen's use of living sacrifices for Impure World Reincarnation, rallying public anger while the Police Force attempts to keep civilians calm. 743
Open conflict begins when Sarutobi Asuma deploys controlled reincarnated Hyūga members against the Uchiha Police Force. 748 After the Uchiha side gains the upper hand, the Four Great Clans face investigation and removal from Konoha's administration; several clans seek leniency by surrendering leaders implicated in past crimes. 877 879 883 884

Trivia
- The clan's elders initially reject Xuanyu for his double pupils, but his birth also becomes the catalyst for Hanjō to create a training ground for younger Uchiha. 1
