Background / History

Kushina attended the Ninja Academy alongside Hyuga Wuye and Minato Namikaze. Before becoming close to Wuye, she was isolated and mocked by other children; Wuye secretly beat up those who targeted her, though Minato later revealed the reason to her. 339

At age seven, Kushina confessed to Wuye atop Hokage Rock. He accepted her confession but immediately broke up with her, claiming to prefer ambiguous relationships. Hurt and furious, she stabbed him with a kunai and escaped with the Body Replacement Technique. 1 Mito later inferred that the Third Hokage had likely pressured Wuye to separate from Kushina because Konoha did not want its future jinchūriki tied to the Hyuga Clan. 3

Mito prepared Kushina to inherit the Nine-Tails and warned her that a jinchūriki needed something to fill the emptiness in her heart. During the transfer, Kurama exploited Kushina’s fear and drove her toward losing control. Wuye’s presence restored her resolve, and she ultimately participated in sealing Kurama within herself. 10 11 13

As the final Uzumaki Clan head, Kushina granted Wuye access to the clan’s sealing arts and allowed the Uzumaki secret-chamber barrier to recognize his blood. 52 53

Appearance

Kushina is distinguished by waist-length crimson hair, which is repeatedly described as fragrant and flame-like. As a child, she wears a pale-yellow coat secured with a black belt and black thigh-high stockings. 1
