Background / History
Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage and the granddaughter of Tobirama Senju, while Mito Uzumaki is identified as her grandmother. Her family’s Senju branch fully merged into Konoha, dispersing its members into other families; this left Tsunade without a unified clan base despite her heritage. She is also a princess of the Land of Fire through her maternal lineage, a status deliberately kept obscure within Konoha. 16 264 523
As a young adult, she looked after her younger siblings, Kushina and Nawaki. When Nawaki failed to stop a conflict, Tsunade taught him that respect required the strength to enforce one’s words. Later, while grieving Mito’s death, she sought a capable teacher for Nawaki and successfully persuaded Orochimaru to assess him. 7 16 20
Tsunade became Hyuga Wuye’s medical-ninjutsu teacher and had him apply his training at Konoha Hospital. She recognized the surgical value of the Byakugan, arguing that ninjutsu should be judged by usefulness rather than clan tradition. Their work eventually produced a simplified C-rank Mystical Palm Technique, which Konoha approved for wider use. 50 52 80
During the Second Shinobi World War, Tsunade advocated assigning a medical ninja to every squad. Nawaki’s death and the rejection of her initial proposal left her emotionally detached and fixated on administrative reform, but Wuye’s intervention during Chiyo’s ambush restored her will to live. 177 178 182
She later left Konoha with Shizune, severing contact with Wuye for a time. While acting as Kazumiya Yukihime at the daimyo’s residence, she disclosed her identity as Tsunade-hime and used her political standing to support Wuye’s goals. 212 213 264 265
Tsunade accompanied Wuye in the infiltration of Sunagakure and supported his retreat after he assassinated the Third Kazekage. Although she had left the village, she remained concerned for Konoha as the Third Shinobi World War began. 267 271 272
As Princess Kazu-no-Miya, she attended Wuye’s Hokage succession ceremony as the Land of Fire’s regent representative. She later married Wuye and returned to his household. 329 495
Appearance
Tsunade has golden hair, usually worn in a braid, and retained a youthful face when first introduced. Her standard casual attire includes a dark-green robe embroidered with the character for “gamble.” 7 16 207
- Uses the identity Kazumiya Yukihime/Kazu-no-Miya for formal duties at the daimyo’s residence. 263 264
- Wears an elaborate dark formal kimono and alters her hair appearance while serving as the princess’s public representative. 263
- Bears the Strength of a Hundred Seal on her forehead after accumulating sufficient chakra. 264
Personality
Tsunade is blunt, competitive, and prone to resolving disputes with overwhelming force. She values practical results over bloodline prestige, openly rejecting Kaguya’s belief that the Byakugan should be reserved for combat. 40 52
Her dedication to saving lives drives much of her conduct. She is frustrated by the lack of accessible medical techniques and persistently pushes for a squad-based medical-ninja system, even when wartime conditions make its immediate adoption difficult. 45 177 178
Nawaki’s death exposes her vulnerability and conflict between personal happiness and inherited duty. Though she wants a life beyond Konoha’s burdens, she feels unable to abandon the village or the ideals of the First and Second Hokage. 177 210
Abilities & Skills
Medical Ninjutsu
Tsunade is regarded as Konoha’s finest medical ninja and combines precise chakra control with extensive medical knowledge. 52 68
- Co-developed a simplified C-rank version of the Mystical Palm Technique with Wuye; he provided the key theoretical support. 80
- Teaches and uses the Mystical Palm Technique and Chakra Scalpel. 68
- Repairs damage to her own chakra pathways after releasing chakra beyond normal limits. 39
- Analyzes poisons, develops antidotes, and helps counter Hanzo’s poison mist. 45 142
- Uses Wuye’s Byakugan-assisted surgical work at Konoha Hospital as evidence that ocular techniques have medical applications. 52
Monster Strength
Tsunade concentrates chakra into a limb and releases it instantaneously for extreme striking force. 39
- Defeated Kaguya’s challenge with a single punch. 40
- Can damage terrain with shockwaves; one stomp leaves a crater more than ten meters wide. 182
- Her own healing ability allows her to recover from the strain placed on her chakra pathways. 39
Chakra Storage and Slug Summoning
Tsunade stores chakra through the Yin Seal and can summon Slugs for large-scale support. 264 272
- Her seal’s stored chakra can be depleted by sustained recovery, as shown after two days of exertion. 264
- Worked with Wuye to provide Slug split-bodies to Konoha’s assault forces, supplying healing support and chakra reserves. 504
- Risks exhausting her own chakra rather than drawing on the Yin Seal during major operations. 504
Leadership and Medical Reform
Tsunade is capable of commanding a warfront, but her greatest strategic priority is reducing casualties through institutional medical support. 177 178
- Proposed assigning one medical ninja to every squad. 177 178
- Presented the jointly developed Mystical Palm Technique to Konoha’s jōnin council. 80
- Delegated frontline command to Kato Dan while requiring him to consult Wuye on operational decisions. 178
Relationships
- Hyuga Wuye — Her only formal disciple and later husband. Tsunade trains him in medical ninjutsu, repeatedly protects his independence from clan pressure, and ultimately supports his political ambitions. 50 61 265 495
- Nawaki — Younger brother. She sought Orochimaru as his teacher, encouraged him after defeat, and was deeply affected by his later death. 16 20 170 177
- Kushina — Younger sister. Tsunade initially declines to take her as a disciple because Uzumaki sealing arts require Kushina’s own comprehension; the two later clash over seniority in Wuye’s household. 7 50 495
- Mito Uzumaki — Grandmother. Tsunade mourns her death while following Mito’s belief that a ninja able to choose their own death should not be mourned without restraint. 16
- Jiraiya and Orochimaru — Longtime comrades and fellow disciples of the Third Hokage. Their banter is combative but familiar; Tsunade relies on Orochimaru’s teaching ability when seeking a mentor for Nawaki. 16 19
- Hyuga Kaguya — Rival and occasional ally. They clash over Wuye’s training, bloodline obligations, and whether ninjutsu should serve clan interests or practical needs. 40 52 61
- Kato Dan — Trusted jōnin under her command during the Second Shinobi World War. His death during the ambush on Tsunade further deepens the trauma surrounding her losses. 178 184
