Background / History
Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s favored disciple and trained alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. He became one of Konoha’s Legendary Three Sannin and was considered for the position of Fourth Hokage before his human experiments were exposed 30 62 63.
Hiruko, an old friend, began experimenting on humans to overcome the gap between himself and the Sannin. Orochimaru acknowledges Hiruko’s influence on his own turn toward experimentation, although he developed Living Corpse Reincarnation independently 91.
His prized disciple Nawaki died after his heart was destroyed during the Third Great Ninja War. Orochimaru later reflects that his cloning research could have supplied a compatible replacement heart, but that the discovery came too late to save Nawaki 89.
Orochimaru conducted human experiments in a forest laboratory outside Konoha and transplanted Danzo’s Sharingan arm. Hiruzen’s siege forced him to abandon the base, leaving research material behind. After defecting, he joined Akatsuki 13 30.
Appearance
Orochimaru is described as bewitchingly handsome, with extremely pale skin and purple eyeshadow at the corners of his eyes 29.
- His hands are ice-cold, and Neji finds his chakra presence intensely sinister 30.
- He repeatedly licks his lips and laughs hoarsely during conversations 13 30.
- He wears white clothing while overseeing his cloning laboratory in Otogakure 89.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues immortality, knowledge, and a body free of biological defects. He covets the Sharingan as an almost perfect bloodline limit and initially regards Sasuke as an ideal vessel. Once Sasuke becomes too powerful to seize safely, he turns to the genetic material Sasuke supplies instead 29 62 89.
He uses promises of instruction and power to conceal ulterior motives. His proposed curse mark for Sasuke is intended to alter the boy’s body for a later takeover, while his negotiations with Rasa conceal an assassination plot 31 51.
His ruthlessness coexists with selective loyalty. He refuses to abandon an injured Kabuto, asks Obito to release Kimimaro, and saves Hiruko from a treacherous subordinate. These actions do not end his experimentation or his pursuit of an ideal life-form 64 66 89 93.
He regards emotional attachment as a weakness even in powerful individuals. Watching Obito’s reunion with Rin interests him because it exposes imperfections beneath Obito’s strength 68.
Abilities & Skills
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A forbidden technique Orochimaru developed to obtain continuing life through replacement bodies 29 31 91.
- His current vessel is approaching collapse when he begins pursuing Sasuke 29.
- He seeks Sasuke’s genes to develop a method of possessing his body perfectly 29.
- He believes the technique can circumvent rejection problems associated with introducing other people’s genes into his body 89.
- It cannot save him if the Reaper devours his soul 62.
Curse Marks and Natural Energy
Orochimaru extracts sage power and converts it into curse marks because he cannot wield Ryūchi Cave’s Sage Mode himself 30 31.
- Processes Jūgo’s blood into a substance containing natural energy, then injects it into his own body 30.
- Removes Neji’s Caged Bird curse mark without damaging his brain, restoring his full Byakugan vision 30 31.
- Converts the extracted Caged Bird into an injectable mark for Sasuke, allowing Sasuke to damage enemies’ brain nerves and permanently suppress their talent 31.
- Experiments with curse-mark power after losing his hands, but finds that using the power still requires seals. He considers forming them with his tongue or feet; no successful workaround is documented 64.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru uses Tobirama’s forbidden technique to summon the dead and command their bodies 61 62.
- Reanimates Hashirama and Tobirama to fight Hiruzen, preventing them from refusing his commands 61 62.
- An attempted third coffin disappears when Enma interrupts him. Orochimaru admits that his version remains imperfect 61.
- Cannot perform the technique while his hands are sealed 66.
- Reanimates Rin using a White Zetsu body as part of Sasuke’s larger resurrection plan 68.
- Kabuto also learns the technique and collects powerful shinobi’s remains for their research 67.
Cloning and Organ Cultivation
Orochimaru can grow complete living clones from genes and cultivate organs for transplantation 89.
- Maintains clones of Suigetsu, Jūgo, and multiple Uchiha, using genetic samples supplied by Sasuke 89.
- Develops the research to provide compatible replacement organs and address the risk of Mangekyō Sharingan blindness 89.
- Suigetsu’s clone reaches an apparent age of three; Obito’s develops self-awareness and repeatedly attempts to signal outside the laboratory 89.
- Kento’s clone repeatedly loses consciousness as soon as it develops awareness, preventing successful cultivation 89.
- Plans to introduce the collected genes into himself to become a perfect life-form; the passages do not confirm that this transformation is completed 89.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Orochimaru uses snakes for combat, infiltration, and access to Ryūchi Cave 13 29 31.
- Surrounds Shisui with snakes and restrains his Body Flicker Shadow Clones, having already studied the technique 13.
- Summons Manda, a colossal purple snake that demands human sacrifices 13.
- Sends a small white snake into the Uchiha compound and manifests his face through it to speak with Sasuke 29.
- Uses white snakes to bind Hiruko’s synthetic subordinate Two for research 91.
- Explains that Ryūchi Cave’s contract is with the cave itself, allowing multiple people to summon its snakes after gaining their recognition 31.
Infiltration and Combat
- Impersonation: Kills Rasa, assumes his appearance, and replaces his guards with Sound ninja. Gaara alone notices the substitution among the Sand delegation 51.
- Mind Body Switch knowledge: Uses Kakashi’s chakra mark and the Yamanaka technique to lure him away from Team Seven’s mission 37.
- Close combat: Interrupts Hiruzen’s hand seals with a punch to force a physical confrontation 60.
- Kusanagi manipulation: Draws the sword from his mouth and moves it with his tongue, stabbing Hiruzen while his hands are restrained 60 62.
- Poison expertise: Is identified as one of the few possible sources of treatment for Shisui’s salamander venom poisoning 9.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — His principal documented weapon; used against Hiruzen, to open the Reaper’s stomach, and to kill Hiruko’s subordinate Three 60 62 67 93.
- Reaper’s mask — Found in a shrine in the ruined Land of Whirlpools; enables him to release the souls inside the Reaper and recover his hands 67.
- “Void” Akatsuki ring — Remains on a severed hand in his laboratory after his defection; Obito demands its return 66.
- Laboratory apparatus — Nutrient tanks, blood-processing instruments, and injection equipment support his curse-mark and cloning research 30 64 89.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher who favored him. Orochimaru kills him during the Chūnin Exams, but Hiruzen seals his hands before dying 62 63.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Prospective vessel and nominal disciple who never acknowledges him as a teacher. Sasuke increasingly directs their dealings and supplies Uchiha genes, removing Orochimaru’s need to seize his body 29 31 66 89.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Loyal subordinate and research assistant. Kabuto vows to continue his ambitions after the loss of his ninjutsu; Orochimaru refuses to abandon him when Tsunade injures him 63 64 67 89.
- Shisui Uchiha — Former Akatsuki partner and intended victim. Orochimaru accepts Danzo’s commission to kill him and claim his body, but fails 13 29.
- Danzo Shimura — Collaborator whose Sharingan arm Orochimaru transplanted. Danzo offers him Shisui’s body in exchange for an assassination and one of Shisui’s eyes 13 30.
- Obito Uchiha — Former Akatsuki superior whose power frightens him. Obito rescues him from Konoha, later demands his ring, and enlists him in Rin’s resurrection 63 66 68.
- Tsunade — Former classmate who attacks him for killing their teacher with her reanimated relatives 63 64.
- Kimimaro — Devoted subordinate whom he found after the Kaguya clan’s destruction. Orochimaru values his potential and requests his release from Kamui 66.
- Jūgo — Source of the blood Orochimaru processes for natural-energy curse marks; also one of his available fighters 30 66.
- Hiruko — Old friend and fellow researcher seeking a perfect body. Orochimaru studies his synthetic creations, saves him from Three, and proposes collaboration 91 93.
- Neji Hyuga — Removes his Caged Bird at Sasuke’s request, making him central to the later debate over abolishing the branch-family system 30 31 87.
- Hiashi Hyuga — Calls him an “old friend” because he once unsuccessfully tried to steal his Byakugan. Hiashi later resists seeking his help because he remains a Konoha traitor 30 87.
- Nawaki — Prized disciple whose fatal heart injury becomes a retrospective example of what Orochimaru’s organ cultivation might have prevented 89.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Akatsuki and the Failed Attack on Shisui
- Accepts Danzo’s offer to kill Shisui despite being his Akatsuki partner. Shisui counters with Susanoo despite having no eyes, prompting Orochimaru to summon Manda 13.
- Seeks Sage Mode at Ryūchi Cave, but remains unable to master it 14 31.
- Leaves Akatsuki after failing to seize Shisui’s body and redirects his attention toward Sasuke 29.
Pursuit of Sasuke
- Repeatedly offers Sasuke discipleship, immortality, and access to Manda. Sasuke instead uses the offers to obtain curse-mark expertise and a route to Ryūchi Cave 29 31.
- Removes Neji’s Caged Bird and gives its extracted power to Sasuke, then summons Manda for Sasuke to establish his own contract 30 31.
- Lures Kakashi away from the Land of Waves mission and invokes the tragedy of Kakashi’s former team to threaten the current Team Seven 36 37.
Konoha Crush

Recovery and Resurrection Research
- Returns to Otogakure and experiments with alternatives to hand-dependent ninjutsu 64.
- Receives Karin for training and participates in Sasuke’s plan to combine Impure World Reincarnation with Nagato’s true resurrection technique 66.
- Recovers his hands through the Reaper’s mask, then reanimates Rin in Amegakure 67 68.
- His role in Neji’s liberation becomes publicly relevant, but his human experiments and Hiruzen’s murder prevent an acceptable return to Konoha 87.
Genetic Research and Hiruko
- Expands his cloning program using samples from Sasuke, pursuing replacement organs, a solution to Sharingan blindness, and his own biological perfection 89.
- Captures Hiruko’s synthetic subordinate Two to investigate the Chimera Technique 91.
- Kills Three when he attempts to devour Hiruko, then leaves with his rescued friend after proposing joint research 93.
- Sasuke later considers having him provide artificial Byakugan for Hiashi; the supplied passage presents this as a plan, not a completed procedure 103.
