History

Sealing and Release

Minato Namikaze sealed the Nine-Tails inside Naruto Uzumaki. Chakra leaking from the seal was converted into Naruto’s own chakra, gradually supplying him with immense reserves. 1

When Naruto first encountered him in the consciousness space, the Nine-Tails offered power, but Naruto refused and chose to wait until he was stronger. 4 Naruto later entered the seal intending to tame him; the Nine-Tails recognized Naruto’s unusual intelligence and sensed the danger posed by Uchiha ocular power. 15

Uchiha Daohuo and Uchiha Shui forcibly destroyed Naruto’s seal. The Nine-Tails emerged as a massive red fox and initially sought to kill the Uchiha responsible, but Daohuo’s Mangekyō Sharingan briefly confused him. 16 Naruto subsequently directed the Nine-Tails’ power against the Third Hokage and transformed its body into Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. 17

Partnership with Naruto

Following the incident, the Nine-Tails’ hostility diminished. He inhabited a golden inner space and conversed more openly with Naruto. 19 Naruto and the Nine-Tails first cooperated to create the enormous humanoid Nine-Tails Naruto form, though their lack of coordination and chakra contamination forced them to end the transformation quickly. 22

The Nine-Tails began cultivating independently after receiving Naruto’s memories of the future. His first major contribution was sensing Shukaku’s presence when Gaara arrived in Konoha. 42

During Naruto’s battle against Shukaku, Naruto used Twin Hands to integrate part of the One-Tail’s abilities into the Nine-Tails. The modification unsettled the fox, who had wanted to grow through his own efforts. 65 Naruto later recovered the Nine-Tails’ other half from Minato’s body, making him whole again. 66

After reflecting on the future in which his counterpart burned away his life through Baryon Mode, the Nine-Tails chose to acknowledge Naruto. Their fist-bump completed their partnership and allowed Naruto unrestricted access to his chakra. 67

Later Conflicts and Growth

Kumogakure’s Amber Purifying Pot absorbed a large amount of the Nine-Tails’ chakra during Naruto’s battle with the Fourth Raikage, leaving the fox severely weakened and dormant. 91

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto pulled the Nine-Tails and the other tailed beasts from Obito’s body. Madara later absorbed all nine beasts to become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki. 181 182 The Nine-Tails nevertheless later gave Naruto the chakra he had gathered for the final battle. 185

After the war, the Nine-Tails’ public image changed completely. Once treated as a symbol of disaster and evil, he became known as the auspicious companion beast of the Nine-Tails Sage. 193

As Naruto’s true body continued evolving, the Nine-Tails found that remaining sealed within him no longer allowed meaningful growth. Naruto therefore took him to the Pirate World, intending to let a Divine Tree absorb planetary energy so the fox could continue advancing. 240 By the time Naruto reached the late Starsea realm, the Nine-Tails had advanced to late-stage Star Lord strength. 283

Despite his aggression, he is intelligent, perceptive, and capable of reassessing people. He notices Naruto’s abnormal nature early, understands the Uchiha plot to release him, and warns Naruto about hostile intent from others. 15 132
