Return to Konoha

Following the Third Hokage's death and the Uchiha rebellion, Jiraiya and Naruto sought Tsunade out as Konoha's only viable candidate for the Hokage position. Tsunade was initially disillusioned with the village and refused the office, telling Naruto that anyone else could take it. Naruto appealed to her connection to the First Hokage's legacy, then accepted her challenge to demonstrate his resolve and strength. 21 22

Tsunade tested Naruto in close combat after he revealed his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. She matched his strength and combat speed through superior physical power and battle experience, but became increasingly interested in his potential. After Naruto revealed a Tailed Beast Transformation, she acknowledged him and permitted him to call her “Sister Tsunade.” 21 22

She returned to Konoha with Naruto and Jiraiya, receiving an enthusiastic welcome from both civilians and shinobi. Shortly afterward, she assumed office as the Fifth Hokage. 23 25

Fifth Hokage

Tsunade immediately addressed the Uchiha crisis. Learning that Itachi Uchiha and Uchiha Qiuyu possessed Mangekyō Sharingan, she ordered Jiraiya to take command of both the ANBU and Root, deliver Konoha's terms to the Uchiha, and purge resistant leadership if necessary. 24
