Background

Sasuke was initially a distant member of Team 7, keeping Naruto and Sakura at arm’s length. His hatred over the Uchiha Clan’s fate consumed him, while Sakura’s devotion to him and Naruto’s persistence rarely changed his cold outward behavior 146 150.

During the Chūnin Exams, he recognized Gaara as a dangerous opponent and fought him with the Sharingan and Chidori. The battle left him severely injured and emotionally shaken, after which he withdrew from Kakashi and the rest of Team 7 180 196.

Kabuto later helped Sasuke awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan and cultivated an alliance with him. Sasuke agreed to pursue Naruto and sever their bond while Kabuto investigated Akatsuki’s pursuit of the tailed beasts and the secret of the Rinnegan 348.
