Background
In his youth, Mu En traveled the continent alongside Long Xiaoyao. Initially rivals because of their opposing dragon martial souls, they became close friends while hunting Evil Soul Masters and developed the Black and White Dual Sacred Dragons martial soul fusion skill. Both fell in love with Ye Xishui, who chose Mu En. On the eve of Mu En and Ye Xishui's wedding, Long Xiaoyao slept with Ye Xishui and left Shrek City; Mu En spent more than a century believing this was a betrayal by both of them. He never learned that Ye Xishui had orchestrated the incident through drugged wine to divide the two men. 116 120 146 147
After discovering that Yan Shaozhe was the grandson of Ye Xishui and Long Xiaoyao, Mu En brought Yan to Shrek and raised him as his disciple. This history later left him unable to publicly acknowledge Yan's origins until Ling Xiao forced a confession during the Extreme North crisis. 79 116 125
By the current era, Mu En leads Sea God's Pavilion from a wheelchair. He repeatedly worries that Shrek's remaining elders cannot sustain the academy after his death, particularly as successive disasters reduce its strength. His paralysis and old internal injuries limit how long he can sustain intensive combat. 73 82 118 158
A widely circulated account titled One Phoenix Plays with Two Dragons mixed details of Mu En's past with fabricated or exaggerated claims that he secretly resumed a relationship with Ye Xishui, colluded with the Holy Spirit Cult, and helped undermine Shrek. Mu En rejected the allegations as slander; the account's portrayal of his motives and later conduct should not be treated as established history. 147 148 149 150 151
Appearance
Mu En is an elderly man who uses a wheelchair. He can manifest remotely through projections during Sea God's Pavilion meetings. 72 120
- Usually seen seated in his wheelchair at Sea God's Pavilion. 118 120
- His projections can attend meetings in his place. 72
- During the Extreme North battle, the Ice Empress destroys his wheelchair, leaving him to support himself in the air despite his paralysis. 158
- After his death, his voice and temporary Spirit Body manifest through the Golden Ancient Tree. 171 172
Personality
Mu En is a cautious and burdened leader. He prioritizes Shrek's survival, ordering secrecy around the deaths of four elders to prevent the Sun-Moon Empire or the Holy Spirit Cult from exploiting the academy's weakened state. 83
His concern for Shrek is tempered by exhaustion and regret. He is repeatedly dismayed by Xuan Zi's irresponsibility and doubts whether the next generation of Pavilion elders can carry Shrek's future. 73 74 92
Mu En is also deeply protective of people he considers family. He attempts to protect Yan Shaozhe through a lingering aura, tries to rescue him from the Extreme North, and later conceals Yan's death from Ye Xishui and Long Xiaoyao. However, his attachment to reputation and reluctance to expose old secrets allow Ling Xiao to corner him into admitting Yan's lineage. 77 79 83 121
When Shrek's position becomes untenable, Mu En accepts personal danger in exchange for the safety of its students and elders. Even while dying, his chief concern is whether the academy will survive without him. The allegations that he had conspired against Shrek provoke unprecedented anger because they invert what he considers his life's work. 150 151 163

Dragon Soul Heavenbreaker
Mu En's Ninth Soul Skill is a powerful single-target killing technique. He uses it to interfere with Ling Xiao's attempt on Yan Shaozhe. 80

Tree of Life Connection
Mu En can draw upon the Tree of Life at Sea God's Pavilion for sensing, projection, protection, and escape support. 77 81

- The Tree's support is greatly weakened outside Shrek, preventing direct spatial teleportation in the Extreme North. 81
- Used the Golden Ancient Tree to transport three elders closer to Star Luo City. After his death, his soul returned to the tree and briefly drew on ancestral souls to defend Shrek. 125 171 172
Black and White Dual Sacred Dragons
Mu En and Long Xiaoyao developed this martial soul fusion skill by combining their Bright and Dark Holy Dragon martial souls. Their long estrangement impeded its use; concern for the gravely injured Ye Xishui restored their mutual trust during the Extreme North battle, but the Ice Empress interrupted them before they could complete the fusion. 146 158
Dragon Pill
Mu En carried a Dragon Pill that years of nurturing had rendered gentle. Ling Xiao extracted it through a spatial rift immediately before Mu En self-destructed, intending to use it for cultivation. 163 164

Story Role / Major Arcs
Extreme North Expedition
Mu En authorizes Yan Shaozhe's expedition to the Extreme North to capture an Ice Jade Scorpion for Ma Xiaotao. He refuses to let Yan travel alone, permits several elders to accompany him, and orders Xuan Zi to provide covert protection. 73 74
When Ling Xiao destroys the protective aura on Yan, Mu En attempts to project himself through the Tree of Life but is blocked by Ling Xiao's spatial lockdown. He then attempts to break the blockade and rescue the trapped elders. 77 78
Ling Xiao forces Mu En to disclose Yan Shaozhe's parentage. Mu En initially refuses, hoping to preserve Shrek's reputation and delay the confrontation, but admits that Yan descends from Ye Xishui and Long Xiaoyao after Ling Xiao kills Xian Lin'er and Cai Meier. 79
Mu En attacks with Dragon Soul Heavenbreaker to save Yan and Qian Duoduo. The rescue fails: Yan is killed by heavenly thunder, Qian sacrifices himself, and Mu En escapes the Extreme North with the severely injured Xuan Zi. 80 81
Shrek's Decline
After returning to Shrek, Mu En convenes Sea God's Pavilion and faces the loss of Yan Shaozhe, Xian Lin'er, Cai Meier, and Qian Duoduo. He orders the academy to suppress news of their deaths, fearing that the Sun-Moon Empire and Holy Spirit Cult would exploit Shrek's reduced strength. 82 83
As information about the Extreme North, Shrek's leadership, and the Golden Ancient Tree spreads across the continent, Mu En repeatedly convenes emergency meetings. He identifies the disclosures as an Extreme North counterattack but cannot determine how the opposing side knows Shrek's deepest secrets. 118 119
After Tang San's projection urges extraordinary measures, Mu En resolves not to let Shrek fall during his tenure. He subsequently sends three elders toward Star Luo City to bring back the academy's tournament students, using the Golden Ancient Tree to hasten their journey. 122 125
Reunion with Long Xiaoyao
Mu En meets Long Xiaoyao in Shrek City after more than a century apart. The two share tea and acknowledge their unresolved past, but Mu En initially refuses to reveal Yan Shaozhe's death or the details of the Extreme North conflict. 120 121
Before parting, Long Xiaoyao warns Mu En that Ye Xishui intends to seize Shrek's Golden Ancient Tree and that the two may eventually meet as enemies. Mu En accepts the warning without attempting to sway his former brother. 121
Mu En later stops Long Xiaoyao and recounts the deaths of the four Shrek elders on a secluded mountain. Ye Xishui, who has secretly followed them, emerges as Mu En begins to reveal Yan's family connection. Though both grandparents seek his help in avenging Yan, Mu En refuses: he fears that joining their campaign could imperil Shrek and that the Holy Spirit Cult might break its proposed century-long guarantee after his death. 123 124
Star Luo City and the Invasion of the Extreme North
When the Myriad Demon King's account accuses him of collusion with the Holy Spirit Cult and of engineering Shrek's losses, Mu En is enraged. Realizing that Shrek's tournament party has not returned, he travels to Star Luo City, where Long Xiaoyao threatens to keep its students and elders as leverage for an expedition against the Extreme North. Mu En agrees to join the campaign in exchange for their release. 150 151
Mu En is distressed by the tournament team's severe injuries and Ma Xiaotao's capture. He warns Shrek's elders to remain united, assigns Xuan Zi to defend the academy and the Golden Ancient Tree, and asks Ye Xishui to uphold her promise not to attack Shrek. He then accompanies the assembled human forces north. 151 152 153
In the Extreme North, Mu En faces the Ice Empress while Ling Xiao's Endless Thunder Domain decimates the invading forces. Mu En's spiritual attack Monarch's Descent fails against her strengthened defenses. Her ice attacks injure him severely and destroy his wheelchair; when he and Long Xiaoyao attempt their martial soul fusion after Ye Xishui is gravely wounded, the Ice Empress interrupts them with Ice Explosion. Mu En later seeks an escape route through the domain, but Ling Xiao blocks it. 154 157 158 161
Death and Final Defense of Shrek
Mortally wounded, Mu En worries about Shrek's future and senses a call from the Golden Ancient Tree. He decides to self-destruct so his soul can return to it, unaware that Tang San has prompted the call and wants his help against the forces besieging Shrek. Before Mu En detonates, Ling Xiao removes his Dragon Pill. Tang San intercepts Mu En's soul and carries it back to the academy. 163 164 169
Tang San places Mu En's soul in the Golden Ancient Tree with a trace of divine power. Mu En manifests as a Spirit Body, orders Xuan Zi and the senior elders to evacuate the younger generation, and attacks the Sun-Moon Empire and Holy Spirit Cult forces. His light-attribute techniques devastate the Evil Soul Masters, but drawing on the souls of former Pavilion masters exhausts him. He watches Shrek's survivors flee before his spirit dissipates, leaving the academy destroyed and its possible rebuilding in their hands. 171 172
