Geography and Environment
The Extreme North is a vast frozen region of ice plains, glacial terrain, bitter winds, and deep ice layers. Its climate is lethal to ordinary visitors but naturally favors its ice-attribute soul beasts. Heavenly lightning drawn down by Ling Xiao can be felt across the territory, with thunderclouds and strikes scattering soul beasts within dozens of miles. 1 11
The region is widely regarded by humans as an incompletely explored forbidden zone. Its extreme cold, hidden soul beast territories, and powerful rulers make deep expeditions exceptionally dangerous. 70 73
- Ice plains — The region’s dominant terrain; Ling Xiao’s lightning cultivation and later the confrontation with the Great Star Dou Forest take place here. 11 61
- Deep ice layers — A heavenly-lightning strike pierced dozens of meters through the ice in the region’s opening incident, leaving behind a deep pit. 1
- Remote glacial areas — Areas far from soul beast nests are used for Ling Xiao’s lightning cultivation to limit collateral disruption. 11 18
- Extreme North environment — Provides a substantial home-field advantage to local ice-and-snow soul beasts while weakening visitors from the Great Star Dou Forest. It also amplifies Snow Emperor and Ice Empress during the later human invasion. 27 64 153 157 158
- Ancient burial icefields — The Extreme North’s long-preserved ice contains the remains of humans and soul beasts from countless years. Electrolux exploited these remains to summon an undead army during his confrontation with Ling Xiao. 52
- Defended approaches — The territory’s borders and clan lands have experienced increased human traffic following the spread of news concerning Immortal Herbs. 85
Governance and Inhabitants
Snow Emperor is the absolute ruler of the Extreme North, while Ice Empress is its second ruler. Their authority is recognized by the region’s strongest soul beasts, including the Titan Snow Demon King and Ice Bear King Xiaobai. 14 19
| Position | Individual / Group | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Snow Emperor | Absolute ruler of the Extreme North and its strongest resident; her cultivation later reaches 810,000 years. 14 74 |
| 2nd | Ling Xiao | Snow Emperor’s adopted son and the Young Lord of the Extreme North; his ability to absorb heavenly tribulations makes him central to the territory’s continued growth. 14 74 |
| 3rd | Ice Empress | The region’s second ruler and Snow Emperor’s closest companion; she later reaches 530,000 years of cultivation. 4 14 74 |
| 4th | Titan Snow Demon King A-Tai | A principal powerhouse and territorial defender with 300,000 years of cultivation. 74 |
| 5th | Ice Bear King Xiaobai | A principal powerhouse and territorial defender with 270,000 years of cultivation. 74 |
Ling Xiao was initially regarded as the fifth-ranked powerhouse despite having only just surpassed one hundred thousand years of cultivation, owing to his background, potential, and control over heavenly lightning. His subsequent growth elevated him above Ice Empress in the territory’s practical power ranking. 14 74
The Ice Crystal Palace serves as Snow Emperor’s territory and the heart of the Extreme North. Located beneath the ice, it is formed entirely from solid ice and was previously visited only by Ice Empress and Xiaobai. 2
When Snow Emperor, Ice Empress, and Ling Xiao departed temporarily for Star Luo City, they entrusted the territory’s security to A-Tai, Xiaobai, and the Ice Jade Scorpion Clan’s three hundred-thousand-year sisters: Xiaoqing, Xiaocui, and Xiao Lu. 97
Before the Holy Spirit Cult-led invasion, the rulers ordered soul beasts below one hundred thousand years of cultivation to migrate to safety. Ten defenders remained: Ling Xiao, Snow Emperor, Ice Empress, A-Tai, Xiaobai, the three Ice Jade Scorpion sisters, and two soul beasts from other races. Clan leaders organized the wider evacuation. 153
Known Locations
- Ice Crystal Palace — Snow Emperor’s ice-built palace beneath the Extreme North; the center of her rule and Ling Xiao’s home after his adoption. 2
- Ice Jade Scorpion Clan territory — Territory of Ice Empress’s clan, whose members become among the first soul beasts to receive Ling Xiao’s help against heavenly tribulations. The clan is guarded by Xiaoqing, Xiaocui, and Xiao Lu when external threats arise. 12 14 74
- Remote lightning-cultivation grounds — Open, uninhabited areas where Snow Emperor and Ice Empress take Ling Xiao to draw down heavenly lightning. 11
- Former sealing site — An especially isolated part of the region where Ling Xiao was severely injured during a lightning storm and soul-tool explosion; it was also the location where Snow Emperor was sealed in the original course of events. 18
- Icefield battlefield — A depopulated area of the ice plains where the Extreme North confronted Di Tian’s delegation and Ling Xiao later deployed the Endless Thunder Domain without endangering nearby residents. 61 64
History
A strange bolt of heavenly lightning descended beneath a clear sky and struck deep into the Extreme North’s ice layer. Snow Emperor investigated the resulting pit as the region’s sovereign, finding a dying infant surrounded by violet lightning at its bottom. She identified him as an innate lightning spirit, took him to the Ice Crystal Palace, and eventually adopted him as Ling Xiao. 1 2
Ling Xiao’s lightning cultivation soon became a recurring disturbance across the territory. His summoned thunderclouds and falling lightning initially caused widespread fear among local soul beasts, but Snow Emperor and Ice Empress protected him and moved his training to isolated areas. The soul beasts gradually learned that Snow Emperor had adopted an unusually dangerous but protected child. 11
Ling Xiao proposed using soul beast heavenly tribulations as both nourishment for himself and a means to save others from fatal breakthroughs. After he helped the Ice Jade Scorpion Xiaoqing survive a one-hundred-thousand-year tribulation, other soul beasts sought his aid. His interventions increased the Extreme North’s overall strength and made him a symbol of hope for soul beasts seeking to escape the normal fate of tribulation. 12 14
Snow Emperor later made strengthening the entire Extreme North a strategic priority. She planned to use treasures, tribulations, and Ling Xiao’s abilities to raise the cultivation of Xiaobai, A-Tai, and other local powerhouses, partly to narrow the gap with the Great Star Dou Forest. 25 27
After obtaining Myriad-Year Profound Ice Marrow from Dragon City and later acquiring Immortal Herbs from the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, the territory’s leading soul beasts experienced another period of rapid advancement. The Extreme North subsequently came to possess Immortal Herbs, a fact eventually confirmed to Bi Ji and spread throughout the continent. 24 25 37 85
The territory’s strengthening also prompted hostile human incursions. Huo Yuhao provided Shrek Academy with the approximate location of the Ice Jade Scorpion Clan, leading Yan Shaozhe, Xian Lin’er, Qian Duoduo, and Cai Meier to enter the Extreme North in search of Ice Jade Scorpions. The four elders were killed in the ensuing confrontation, while Xuan Zi and Mu En escaped the territory. 71 76 81 83
Yan Shaozhe’s death later became the stated motive for a much larger assault. After learning that he was their descendant, Ye Xishui and Long Xiaoyao sought revenge against Ling Xiao and the Extreme North. In Star Luo City, Ye Xishui coerced representatives of Shrek Academy, the Sun-Moon Empire, the Body Sect, and the Star Luo Empire into joining the Holy Spirit Cult’s campaign. Ling Xiao, Snow Emperor, and Ice Empress disclosed their identities there before returning to prepare the territory’s defense. 124 125 139 140 143
The invaders arrived with nearly thirty powerful soul masters, against the Extreme North’s ten remaining defenders. Ling Xiao’s Thunder Domain intercepted the attackers’ opening assault and struck the human forces while sparing the soul beasts. Snow Emperor and Ice Empress fought Ye Xishui and Mu En respectively, while Ling Xiao faced Long Xiaoyao. The empresses later combined their domains into the Snow Dance Ultimate Ice Domain. 153 156 157 158
The Sun-Moon Empire initially conserved its strength behind Kong Deming’s soul tools while other attackers suffered heavy losses. When Kong Deming later fired the Silver Moon Divine Light Wave, Snow Emperor and Ice Empress redirected it with reflective ice mirrors, devastating the forces that had helped charge it. Ling Xiao then destroyed further incoming soul-tool attacks and used spatial power to obstruct attempts to flee his domain. 156 157 160 161
Role in the Soul Beast World
Ling Xiao’s ability to absorb heavenly lightning and break tribulation shackles transformed the Extreme North from an isolated northern power into a target of continent-wide attention. Myriad Demon King investigated the region and reported that its rulers had survived tribulations that should have been fatal, while Ling Xiao had grown into a major powerhouse. 46 58
Di Tian and the ferocious beasts of the Great Star Dou Forest eventually entered the Extreme North seeking control over Ling Xiao. Di Tian argued that Ling Xiao’s power concerned the entire soul beast race, while Snow Emperor, Ice Empress, Ling Xiao, A-Tai, and Xiaobai refused to surrender him. 61 62
The resulting clash demonstrated the region’s increased strength:
- Snow Emperor revealed 790,000 years of cultivation and used the Extreme North’s icefield environment to contend with Di Tian. 62 64
- Ice Empress revealed 490,000 years of cultivation and defeated Xiong Jun decisively. 62 63
- Ling Xiao revealed 530,000 years of cultivation and overwhelmed Myriad Demon King with lightning. 62 63
- A-Tai and Xiaobai revealed 290,000 and 270,000 years of cultivation respectively, though they struggled against Zi Ji and Yao Ling. 62 63
Following the confrontation, Ling Xiao offered to assist Great Star Dou Forest soul beasts with future tribulations, opening the possibility of continued cooperation rather than direct competition. Di Tian later chose to personally warn the Extreme North that the Clear Sky Sect was attempting to turn all human factions against it and to discuss a potential alliance. 68 93 94
Bi Ji subsequently entered the Extreme North as an envoy and sought Ling Xiao’s aid for her own heavenly tribulation. Ling Xiao helped her survive it, further easing relations between the two soul beast powers, though the Great Star Dou Forest and the Extreme North remained independent. 85 87
As a human coalition formed against the Extreme North, Ling Xiao negotiated a joint operation with Di Tian at the Great Star Dou Forest’s Lake of Life. The Extreme North would draw leading human combatants away from Shrek Academy, creating an opportunity for Di Tian and other ferocious beasts to seize its Golden Ancient Tree. Gu Yuena approved the operation and instructed her followers to hand the tree to Ling Xiao’s side rather than bring it back to the forest. 143 145 146
External Threats and Political Position
The revelation that the Extreme North possessed Immortal Herbs drew attention from Shrek Academy, the empires, the Body Sect, the Sun-Moon Empire, the Holy Spirit Cult, and other factions. Although many powers initially hesitated because of the territory’s uncertain strength, the later exposure of its five principal powerhouses made its military capacity widely known. 84 91 93
Tang San and the Clear Sky Sect sought to expose the Extreme North’s combat strength and the effects of its Immortal Herbs in order to encourage continent-wide competition for its resources. This strategy aimed to isolate the territory by making it appear to be an enemy and prize for the human world. 91 93 94
In response, Ling Xiao used Myriad Demon King to disseminate information concerning the foundations and secrets of major human factions, particularly Shrek Academy, the Sun-Moon Empire, and the Holy Spirit Cult. The exposure of Shrek’s Sea God’s Pavilion elders and Golden Ancient Tree redirected widespread attention toward competing human powers and forced them to guard against one another. 106 112 113 117
The Extreme North therefore occupies a central but precarious position in continental politics: its Immortal Herbs and tribulation-breaking methods make it valuable to soul beasts and coveted by humans, while its rapidly strengthened defenders deter immediate invasion. 85 93 117
That deterrence did not prevent Ye Xishui from assembling a coerced invasion force after Yan Shaozhe’s death. The coalition’s numerical advantage was undermined by its divided loyalties, the Extreme North’s home-field advantage, and Ling Xiao’s ability to shield his allies while attacking across the battlefield. The Sun-Moon Empire also pursued its own opportunity to obtain soul bones and Immortal Herbs rather than serving as a dependable ally to the Holy Spirit Cult. 124 139 153 156 160
