The enemy troops took the opportunity to launch a surprise assault, driving the disordered Ursus forces back several dozen meters before being forced to retreat under Ursus fire.
Corpses lay piled across the thousand-meter stretch between the harbor and the city gates. Black carrion birds flew through the smoke, eager to begin their gluttonous feast. One particularly impatient bird landed on the battlefield first. Before it could peck at the flesh, a black crossbow bolt pierced its body. The tremendous force tore it into several pieces, while the bolt continued onward and buried itself deep in the rocky ground, leaving only its tail trembling faintly.
"Faust, there's no need to waste a bolt on something like that."
Centaurea rubbed her face. Her originally fair skin had been blackened by gunpowder smoke, and with that rub, the soot spread from the corners of her mouth to behind her ears. She had not rested properly these past few days. Even with a Pegasus's strong body, she was utterly exhausted now.
"...I just can't stand seeing that beast eat our soldiers' corpses. Too bad we have no way to bring them back."
Faust silently cranked his crossbow once more. It was not a repeating model and could only fire one bolt before needing to be reloaded, but it possessed far greater force and power than those rapid-fire assault crossbows. Combined with his strange and powerful Originium Arts, it was enough to pierce even the enemy's heavy armor.
Several crossbowmen, artillerymen, and their commander were currently inside Observation Window No. 5 of the No. 3 Harbor Defense Wall. It was now the third day of the war, with seven days remaining before the mobile city successfully started up.
