Background

Centaurea originally worked as a spy and assassin for the Armorless Union, an organization serving the Kazimierz Commercial Union. She accepted employment as Claude's servant in order to surveil him while concealing her true purpose. 4

Before her assignment in Kazimierz, she claimed to have worked as a Catastrophe Messenger, accompanying her master on wilderness surveys and undergoing demanding field training. She described that work as exhausting, dangerous, poorly paid, and constantly burdened by extra assignments. 5

Her cover job unexpectedly gave her comfort and freedom she had not experienced in years: she cleaned once daily, could manage the rest of her time herself, and used the position to avoid further Armorless Union assignments. 5 After the Union moved against her, Claude confronted the assassins, rescued her, and told her to return to work for him if she had nowhere else to go. 6

Centaurea chose to leave Kazimierz with Claude, beginning a long journey through the wilderness and eventually becoming part of the Reunion Movement's forces. 7 14
