Commercial Union Era

The Great Knight Territory was publicly governed jointly by the Commission of Inquiry and the Commercial Union. In practice, the Commercial Union controlled Kazimierz's economic lifeblood and used capital to influence knight competitions, media, and public opinion. 4 64 70

The Armorless Union, an assassin and intelligence organization employed by the Commercial Union, maintained a broad network throughout the city. It targeted Infected communities and organizations that aided them, forcing such groups to relocate whenever discovered. 64

The old order rested on an unstable balance between merchants and knights: merchants had risen from retainers to dominate the economy, while knight orders retained military power and remained necessary against Ursus. 70

Reform and Reorganization

Claude and Margaret's faction used support from knight orders, the Commission of Inquiry, and public pressure to dismantle the Commercial Union across Kazimierz. The operation sealed off cities, removed the Union's power structure, and transferred control of its institutions to the new administration. 66 70

Margaret became the central public leader of the reforms, aided by the prestige of the Nearl name and Claude's military support. 70

Knight Culture

Knight competitions are Kazimierz's most recognizable cultural institution and a major source of tourism and revenue. Every city has arenas, while the Great Knight Territory alone has four large arenas and ten smaller ones. 63 67

Treatment of the Infected

Kazimierz historically discriminated against the Infected. They were barred from openly walking the streets and from entering knight competitions, despite the nation having many Infected residents. 63

The reformed government granted the Infected citizenship and associated human rights. Public resistance remained limited after broader exposure of the Commercial Union's abuses and the Infected's role in the struggle for change. 70

Silverlance Pegasi

The Silverlance Pegasi are Kazimierz's elite campaign knights and a national symbol. Their Kuranta physical abilities allow rapid long-distance movement through forests, mountains, snow, and other terrain where vehicles struggle to operate. 62 63

• A force of more than one hundred Silverlance Pegasi crossed 327 kilometers on foot in five hours during a border operation. 63
• Their throwing lances can inflict damage comparable to Originium artillery, including against Ursus warships at close range. 63
• Claude's successive victories against Ursus established his prestige within the order and secured him a place among its upper ranks. 63

National Military Reform

Kazimierz's traditional knight-centered military structure had repeatedly proven inadequate against Ursus's organized armed forces. Claude and the commanders of the knight corps began replacing it with a clearer national command system, regulations, and standardized discipline. 73
