Cosmology
The Bottomless Abyss consists of innumerable Abyssal worlds, each an enormous plane in its own right. Its total number of layers cannot be reliably mapped: routes between worlds shift, and previously charted worlds may vanish from their known locations. 69 683
Later accounts describe the Bottomless Abyss as a single, vast world, with individual Abyssal plane-worlds functioning as its branches. Its scale is immense enough to accommodate the true bodies of seventh-rank beings. 710 767
| Structure | Description |
|---|---|
| Bottomless Abyss | The overarching lower-plane world and source of Abyssal power. 710 |
| Abyssal world / layer | A plane-sized branch of the Abyss, often ruled or contested by powerful demons. 69 710 |
| Abyssal Will | The will associated with the Abyss and its worlds; grants favor, rules, and authority to demons that further its interests. 502 545 |
| Sea of Rules | A source of rule power opened to demons during major conquests and conflicts. 580 |
Environment
Abyssal worlds are high-magic lower planes whose conditions are hostile even by planar standards. Dense magical power supports demonic growth, while violent terrain and weather make survival precarious. 295 296
- Many layers are defined by extreme cold, blazing heat, toxic mists, deep oceans, volcanoes, lava fields, or sulfurous air. 295 297 302
- Even minor caves can contain magical power denser than Isata's heavily enhanced environment. 296
- Demons can survive by absorbing Abyssal magic power, though it is slower than feeding on other resources. 77
- The Styx runs through Abyssal worlds and may connect different layers; in Charles's world, it emerges and exits through separate ends of the plane. 685
- A world can be dragged into the Abyss, corrupted, and incorporated into its lower-plane ecosystem. 295 706
Inhabitants and Society
Demons
Demons are native to the Abyss and are described as powerful creatures whose strength can rival wizards of the same rank. Their society is shaped by predation, bloodline evolution, and the constant threat of stronger demons. 23 77
- Most demons begin as Demon Worms and may evolve through successive forms and ranks. 77
- Demon bloodlines can mutate during advancement, allowing weaker species to develop into more powerful demonic forms. 77 303
- Demons commonly kill rivals to consume their flesh, souls, heart cores, and bloodline power. 77 545
- Pain, despair, souls, demon hearts, and blood essence are all usable resources. 296 297
- Although demons are chaotic and frequently betray one another, they can form armies, settlements, and territorial hierarchies under powerful rulers. 302 509 681
Settlements and Trade
Trade exists despite the Abyss's brutality. Demon settlements are usually crude stone settlements built around a powerful ruler, while larger cities may belong to demon grand lords or fallen races. 302
- Soul shards serve as a basic demon currency. 302
- Resources may be acquired through mining, hunting, trade, slavery, or stripping them from defeated demons. 302 525
- Materials from other planes command steep prices in the Abyss because transportation is dangerous and difficult. 305 307 605
- Abyssal materials such as Abyssal Demonic Iron, sulfur crystals, blood-veined stone, Abyssal crystals, and Chaos Shale are products of its high-magic environment. 303
- Demons use Abyssal Demonic Iron to strengthen their bones and scales, though Charles considers this crude compared with industrial smelting. 679
Abyssal Will and Authority
The Abyss rewards those who expand its influence, kill its enemies, or bring it souls. Its favor can make cultivation, bloodline modification, research, and rule analysis easier. 502 543
- Favor may be gained through mass slaughter, bringing souls into the Abyss, or fighting in the Blood War. 502
- Rewards include magic power, complete Abyssal rules, rank advancement opportunities, and titles such as Abyssal Scourger. 545 572 580
- In an Abyssal world, territorial control is the measure of authority. 624
- Conquering an entire layer can grant the authority and crown of an Abyss Overlord, allowing the holder's will to influence that world. 680 682
- Abyssal authority can grant power beyond a demon's natural rank, but it is distinct from true seventh-rank strength. 681 710
- Universe origin bestowed by the Abyss can aid advancement, but those who rely on it to reach the seventh rank must permanently obey the Abyss's will. 706
Conflict with Purgatory
The Abyss has fought the Nine Hells/Purgatory for countless years. Their conflict is especially fierce in Avernus, but individual Abyssal worlds may also collide directly with Purgatory worlds. 535
| Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Abyssal world collides with Purgatory | Demon lords may lead legions into Purgatory, while devils attempt to kill the ruling demon lord and seize the Abyssal world. 535 |
| Demon victory | The victorious demon lord may take Purgatory territory back into the Bottomless Abyss. 535 |
| Devil victory | The Abyssal world can remain in Purgatory and become new Purgatory territory. 535 |
| Abyss reclaims territory | The Abyssal Will rewards contributors with rules, energy, and opportunities for advancement. 580 |
Travel and Abyss Gates
The Abyss is comparatively easy to enter but difficult to leave. Its violent energy can reduce the cost of travel between planes, but it also makes portals and exploitation of its resources extremely dangerous. 294 598
- Demons invade other planes through large blood sacrifices and cross-planar Abyss Gates. 598 600
- An Abyss Gate's true body generally remains in the Abyss, while its activation produces detectable Abyssal fluctuations in the target world. 600
- Building a portal in the Abyss benefits from its abundant energy, reducing concerns about mana shortages during transmission. 598
- Opening a portal to extract Abyssal resources invites danger; the Abyss is described as a place that “deals with” those seeking to take from it. 301
- Planar descent into the Abyss exposes travelers to dangerous high-energy information and distorted perceptions of time. 295
Charles Augustus's Abyssal World
Charles first entered the Abyss through Delis's coordinates, arriving in her lair with Molly, Erika, Bruce, and Scorchflame. He found its dense magical environment immediately compatible with his demonic bloodline. 295 296
He later established Millstone Fortress, expanded through conquest, and gained increasing favor from the Abyss during the war against devils. 525 545 580
After Hachiwote's fall created a vacancy in the layer's authority, Charles's legions conquered the entire Abyssal world. He received its invisible crown and became its Abyss Overlord. 591 680
- Charles used the Abyssal Will's support to separate his world from Purgatory, restoring its planar crystal wall and leaving Anog stranded behind. 681 682
- He developed settlements, fortresses, cities, roads, a massive Abyss Gate, and a canal network to support trade and resource transport. 679 685
- His territory became a source of Abyssal and devil materials for trade with the Wizard World. 604 605 697
