Background / History

Spirit Hall Grudge and Debt to Prince Xue Xing

Dugu Bo nearly died at the hands of Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo, leaving him with a deep grudge against Spirit Hall. Prince Xue Xing’s intervention enabled him to survive, and Dugu Bo considered that kindness a debt he could not casually abandon. Although associated with Heaven Dou, he held no official position there and regarded himself as an independent wanderer 23 25 48 50.

His own Martial Soul’s poison also damaged his body. Years of treating himself led him to study both medicine and poison, while the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well helped suppress his condition. His granddaughter Dugu Yan suffered a related affliction that resisted his treatments 25 36 57.

Two-Move Wager at Three Gorges Pass

After Dai Yunzhao’s victory over Dai Mubai, Dugu Bo intercepted the returning army to kill Yunzhao, whom he considered the greater threat to Heaven Dou. Shadow’s immunity to poison and ability to escape through shadows made that task much harder than expected 22 23.

Yunzhao offered to stake his life on surviving an attack in exchange for his soldiers’ safety. Dugu Bo raised the requirement to two moves, each countered by a different method, and promised to spare the eight hundred soldiers regardless of the outcome. He also declared that surviving both attacks would make Yunzhao worthy of his support 23 24.

Yunzhao survived the first attack through defense and spatial travel. Dugu Bo aimed the second so that dodging would expose the soldiers behind him; Yunzhao instead combined their Soul Power with Shadow’s support and unleashed War Lord Blood Pagoda, dispersing the poison and knocking Dugu Bo backward. Dugu Bo withdrew his barrier and allowed the army to leave 24.

Afterward, Yunzhao renewed his offer of a state-preceptor position and treatment for both grandfather and granddaughter. He entrusted Dugu Bo with an immature Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, which Dugu Bo agreed to keep until it matured 25.

Dugu Yan’s Capture and Defection to Star Luo

During the border war, Dugu Bo hesitated to use his poison against Star Luo because doing so might destroy his chance of obtaining Yunzhao’s help for Dugu Yan. While he traveled to Heaven Dou City seeking reinforcements, Shadow abducted her as leverage 36 38.

Yunzhao treated Dugu Yan by granting her a Black Panther Martial Soul and having Pufferfish Douluo extract the remaining poison. When she appeared unharmed before her grandfather and confirmed the treatment, Dugu Bo declared his allegiance to Star Luo. He reproached Heaven Dou for failing to protect her while he carried out Prince Xue Xing’s request 46 50.

His submission was not initially wholehearted. Yunzhao revealed that Dugu Yan’s bestowed Martial Soul bound her life to his own, preventing Dugu Bo from retaliating without endangering her. Dugu Bo reluctantly accepted treatment under those terms, though Yunzhao postponed granting him a Martial Soul because an uncontrolled release of his poison could devastate the camp 52.

Service to Dai Yunzhao

Yunzhao assigned Dugu Bo to develop the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well into a medicinal field and encouraged him to explore pill refinement. Dugu Bo recognized that his knowledge could produce either poisons or beneficial medicines, though no completed pills are documented in this period 57.

In Star Dou Forest, he deterred the Peerless Dragon and Snake couple from attacking Yunzhao and deferred to the prince during their subsequent recruitment. He also accepted custody of the Blue Silver Emperor, storing her in a plant-suitable Soul Tool for Yunzhao’s future use 59 60 64.

Before their journey to Sunset Forest, Yunzhao still relied on threats against Dugu Yan to guarantee his safety. Dugu Bo denied any intention of harming him, disguised the prince, and accompanied him through the wilderness 65 66.

Blue Dragon Beast and Renewed Loyalty

At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Yunzhao bestowed Blue Dragon Beast rather than the difficult-to-control Blue Poison Beast he had previously considered. The new Martial Soul strengthened Dugu Bo’s body and converted years of accumulated poison into cultivation, raising him from level 92 to level 94 52 68.

Dugu Bo regarded the transformation as a second life. Despite sensing the reserve energy associated with Yunzhao’s control, he swore unwavering loyalty and stood guard during the prince’s cultivation. He subsequently obtained four Soul Rings for his second Martial Soul and freely allowed Yunzhao to harvest his Immortal Herbs 68 69.

Appearance

  • Before receiving Blue Dragon Beast: A somewhat gaunt elderly man whose body had long been corroded by cold poison 68.
  • After the transformation: Becomes burly and exceptionally robust as the new Martial Soul strengthens his body 68.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud of his poison mastery and initially treats a Soul Elder’s challenge with contempt. Nevertheless, he recognizes extraordinary talent: Yunzhao’s courage, unusual Soul Rings, and survival of the wager turn his dismissal into interest and respect 23 24.

His independence does not erase his obligations. He remains attached to Prince Xue Xing’s past kindness, while Dugu Yan’s safety outweighs his political allegiance. Her illness and capture expose the strongest pressure point in his otherwise defiant disposition 23 36 50 52.

He hates being controlled and initially serves Yunzhao under coercion. The restoration of his health and cultivation changes that relationship into sincere gratitude; afterward, he willingly guards Yunzhao and shares resources he no longer needs 52 57 68 69.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

His original Martial Soul supplies the poison and overwhelming Soul Power that make him a battlefield-scale threat 23 24 50.

  • Fourth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Poison: Releases corrosive serpent venom against opponents 24.
  • Poison barriers: Blocks passage and protects the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well from intruders 23 68.
  • Wide-area poisoning: Can cover more than half a battlefield, but does not distinguish allies from enemies 50.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: Manifests the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor during combat 24.
  • Limits: Shadow is immune to his poison; Pufferfish Douluo can internalize poison and surpasses him in poison capabilities 23 39 68.

Blue Dragon Beast

A second Martial Soul bestowed by Dai Yunzhao, identified as a subordinate of the Tyrannosaurus God 68.

  • Strengthens Dugu Bo’s body and converts accumulated poison into cultivation 68.
  • Relieves his longstanding poison burden without simply stripping away the poison that supports his power 52 68.
  • Increases his cultivation speed; has four Soul Rings by the latest account 68 69.
  • Contains reserve energy associated with Yunzhao’s control, which Dugu Bo accepts after swearing loyalty 68.

Dragon-Serpent Combined Strike

The combination of Blue Dragon Beast and Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor enables Dugu Bo to perform this Martial Soul combination technique by himself. Yunzhao specifically values him for this pairing; an actual combat use is not shown in the supplied account 68.

Medicine and Pharmacology

Years of regulating his poisoned body have made Dugu Bo knowledgeable in both healing and toxins 25.

  • Collects Immortal Herbs and preserves medicinal plants 25 68.
  • Uses medicinal power to keep the withering Blue Silver Emperor alive, then plants her beside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 68.
  • Accepts responsibility for developing a medicinal field and investigating pill refinement 57.
  • Limit: His existing treatments cannot resolve Dugu Yan’s worsening condition 36.

Disguise and Local Knowledge

  • Applies a disguise to Dai Yunzhao that he considers sufficient to fool ordinary observers 66.
  • Knows Sunset Forest thoroughly, having spent more time there than anywhere else, and quickly navigates to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 68.

Equipment / Items

  • Storage Soul Tool — Especially suitable for plants; used to transport the Blue Silver Emperor 64.
  • Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma — Already possesses a mature specimen and receives an immature one from Yunzhao to keep until maturity 25.
  • Immortal Herb collection — Cultivated around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well; later made freely available to Yunzhao 68 69.
  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — His protected refuge and former means of suppressing poison; later used for Yunzhao’s cultivation and planned medicinal production 57 68.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and his highest personal priority. Her treatment brings him to Star Luo, while her binding initially forces his compliance 50 52 57.
  • Dai Yunzhao — Former assassination target, then a coercive sovereign, and finally the recipient of his sincere loyalty after granting him renewed health and power 22 52 68.
  • Prince Xue Xing — Benefactor whose lifesaving kindness sustains Dugu Bo’s support for Heaven Dou. Dugu Bo later considers that debt repaid through his wartime service 23 36 50.
  • Shadow — Poison-immune opponent whose mobility frustrates the assassination attempt; later a fellow subordinate whose presence reassures Dugu Bo during Yunzhao’s dangerous cultivation 23 69.
  • Yue Guan and Gui Mei — Spirit Hall enemies who nearly killed him in the past, making cooperation during the war deeply hostile 48.
  • Blue Silver Emperor — Captive entrusted to his care. He preserves her for Yunzhao’s intended future Soul Ring rather than taking the opportunity himself 64 68.
