Overview

Danzo considers Chiba a high-value “mature test subject” rather than an ordinary child, owing to his evolving Wood Release, his defeat of Root operatives, and his killing of a chunin. Root’s long-term objective is to make him dependent on carefully manufactured attachments before offering Root as his only apparent path. 10

Root later escalates this strategy by using Iruka Umino and Naruto Uzumaki as leverage. It arranges an attack on Iruka through Hidden Sound defectors while withholding the antidote, seeks to make Chiba believe Root alone can protect those close to him, and supports Mizuki’s attempt to capture Naruto after the theft of the Scroll of Seals. Methods and Operations

Surveillance

After Chiba defeats its initial capture team, Root searches his residence and checks for traces of Wood Release. Its operatives also monitor his training, chakra use, injuries, toxin development, and relationships. 4 10 20

Yotsuki delivers detailed intelligence on Chiba’s condition and activities through concealed meetings in Konoha’s drainage channels. Although Chiba tracks him with roots and knowingly leaks selected information, Yotsuki continues transmitting reports while withholding some details, including evidence of Bai Ye’s presence and Chiba’s medical purchases. 20 27 33

Following Haku’s arrival at the Senju Clan Grounds, a white-masked Root operative resumes close surveillance from outside the clan gates. 81

Infiltration and Deception

His planned progression begins with obtaining a Wood Release blood sample, then demanding missions and eventually Chiba’s allegiance. 10 27

Root enforces compliance among its own agents with the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal. Danzo uses the seal to compel Yotsuki to participate in the operation against Iruka despite Yotsuki’s fear that Chiba will discover his involvement. 10 27

Capture and Experimentation

Root initially sends three masked operatives to take Chiba to Danzo. Though they claim Danzo “requests” his presence, their attacks target Chiba’s neck and heart, showing that lethal force is authorized. 1

Danzo’s records describe a planned capture procedure: seal Chiba’s chakra, extract tissue to determine the source of his Wood Release, and implant the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal. He initially suspends overt capture, judging that premature force would alert Hiruzen Sarutobi and make Chiba harder to control. 10

Root later resumes selective interception operations. Its agents block Chiba from reaching the poisoned Iruka, carry antidotes while refusing to provide them, and attempt to secure Chiba and incriminating evidence during the resulting confrontation. 30 31 32

Root also attempts to take custody of the bounty hunter Iron Claw and a Root-linked black iron plaque at the mine, citing Konoha secrets while seeking to prevent the Anbu from controlling the evidence. 40 41

History

Root’s first documented action against Senju Chiba is an attempted abduction at the ruined Senju Clan Grounds. Three masked operatives surround the newly awakened Chiba and attack when he refuses to comply. Chiba defeats one during the encounter, triggering his first evolution; after he chooses Poison Vine Sprout, he incapacitates the remaining attackers and one escapes to report the result. 1 2

The organization continues probing Chiba’s defenses after the failed operation. Its agents search his home despite the Hokage’s Anbu presence, while Root’s intelligence gathers evidence of Poison Vine, water absorption, mineral-based hardening, and Chiba’s ability to track intruders with Wood Release. 4 10

Danzo subsequently changes strategy from immediate seizure to manipulation. He withdraws temporary capture teams, leaves long-range surveillance in place, and inserts Yeyue into Chiba’s class. Root intends to exploit Chiba’s interest in Senju history and the mysterious Subject No. 74 to gain access to the Senju shrine’s protected legacy. 10 12

As Chiba’s strength develops beyond Root’s early projections, Danzo continues delaying full capture. He orders Yotsuki to report on Chiba while concealing or filtering information, and he decides to wait until Chiba believes that Konoha has abandoned the Senju before presenting Root as his only means of protecting those around him. 27

Root then engineers the attack on Iruka. It permits Hidden Sound defectors to enter Konoha, provides them false information about Wood Release samples, withholds the antidote for their Meridian Poison, and positions Captain Kinoe to exploit Chiba’s desperation. Chiba rescues Iruka without Root’s aid, captures evidence of Root’s rendezvous code, and preserves the code’s chakra residue before it can be confiscated. 27 30 31 32

Following the failure of the Iruka operation, Root attempts to discipline and recover Yotsuki, who had concealed information concerning Bai Ye and warned Chiba in advance. Chiba intercepts Root operatives at the pharmacy and makes Yotsuki deliver a message directly to Danzo, forcing the embedded informant to choose between Root and Chiba. 33

Root remains implicated in external efforts to obtain Senju-related assets. Iron Claw claims that Root had purchased Senju blood samples, while a black iron plaque recovered from the mine bears a Root coordinate seal. Captain Kinoe attempts to seize both Iron Claw and the plaque, but the Anbu take custody of the captives and Hiruzen Sarutobi confirms that the plaque belongs to Root. 40 41

During Naruto’s graduation incident, Root works through Mizuki and concealed forest operatives to capture Naruto and exploit the Scroll of Seals. Chiba’s Metal-Wood Spear forces the Root operatives to retreat, leaving behind Root-associated fabric and a tracking talisman keyed to Naruto. 47 48 49

Root continues monitoring the revived Senju Clan Grounds after Chiba brings Haku into the compound and restores the Senju crest, indicating that Danzo regards the forming Senju household as an emerging threat or asset. 81
