Background / History

After the death of Senju Butsuma and other senior clan members, Hashirama became the Senju Clan’s highest-ranking member and current head. Although Hibari belongs to a branch line, Hashirama rejects distinctions between main and branch families, regarding Hibari and Tsunade as the clan’s remaining young heirs. 1

Hashirama served as Konoha’s First Hokage during its early years, when village institutions and policies were still being formed. He and Uchiha Madara founded the village together; Madara even chose the name “Konoha.” Hashirama continued to believe that lasting peace could be achieved through mutual understanding, a conviction that ultimately placed him at odds with Madara. 2 45

He is married to Uzumaki Mito and is Tsunade’s grandfather. He also treats Hibari as his grandson, despite Hibari’s branch-family ancestry. 1 2

Appearance

Hashirama wears dark red layered armor in the Warring States style and carries a massive scroll across his back. 45

  • Red armor distinguishes him from Tobirama’s blue armor and Hibari’s black armor. 1
  • Often seen in formal Hokage attire before changing into battle armor during emergencies. 45
  • His Sage Mode manifests visible markings on his face. 47 48

Personality

Hashirama is warm, expressive, and intensely proud of his family. He readily encourages Hibari’s lofty speeches about carrying on the Senju spirit, while Tobirama recognizes that Hashirama’s affection makes him easy for the boy to persuade. 12

As Hokage, he can shift abruptly from relaxed to authoritative when Konoha’s security, reputation, or alliances are threatened. He personally undertakes missions involving tailed beasts and insists that Konoha fulfill its obligations to allied villages. 11 12

Despite his stature, Hashirama has a notably undignified fondness for gambling and indulges Tsunade’s interest in it, much to Mito’s and Hibari’s disapproval. 5 28 31

His defining ideal is peace through understanding. Even while fighting Madara, he repeatedly attempts to reason with his former friend before accepting that he must use lethal force to protect Konoha. 47 48 50

Abilities & Skills

Wood Release

Hashirama possesses Wood Release, a bloodline limit based on water- and earth-nature chakra. His Wood Release is powerful enough to control battlefields, restrain tailed beasts, and create defensive structures. 5 47

  • Wood Dragon Technique — Creates a wooden dragon capable of intercepting and crushing a Tailed Beast Bomb. 47
  • Wood Human Technique — Summons a giant wooden humanoid to engage the Nine-Tails and catch its Tailed Beast Bomb. 47
  • Deep Forest Emergence — Causes a forest to erupt and ensnare targets; used against Kakuzu after the latter attacked Hibari. 22 23
  • Wood Shield Technique — Forms a massive wooden enclosure that protects its occupants; Hashirama used it to secure the room during Hibari’s sealing treatment. 43
  • Wooden arms — Produces enormous arms from the ground to disarm and restrain the Nine-Tails’ Susanoo-clad form. 48

Sage Mode

Hashirama can enter a perfect Sage Mode instantly due to his Sage Body, dramatically increasing his chakra and Wood Release output. 47 48

  • Activated to subdue the rampaging Seven-Tails in Insect King Valley. 23
  • Used at full power against Madara and the Nine-Tails. 47 48
  • The exertion of repeated Sage Mode techniques leaves him severely fatigued. 48 49

Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands

Hashirama’s largest documented Wood Release technique manifests a colossal thousand-armed Buddha statue.

  • Top Transformed Buddha — Launches a barrage of giant wooden fists capable of smashing through much of Madara’s Majestic Attire: Susanoo. 48 49
  • Previously overwhelmed the Seven-Tails so thoroughly that it was nearly forced into reincarnation. 47 48
  • Its immense output substantially drains Hashirama after use. 48 49

Kuan’s Entering the Marketplace with Helping Hands

A follow-up technique used through the giant Buddha statue to suppress tailed beasts.

  • The Buddha seizes the Nine-Tails and presses a “Seat” character onto its forehead, immobilizing it after Susanoo armor is broken. 48 49

Tailed-Beast Suppression

Hashirama is one of the few shinobi able to confidently subdue a tailed beast alone. 12

  • Arrives in Insect King Valley and effortlessly takes control of the Seven-Tails crisis. 23
  • Defeats the Seven-Tails after Hibari’s sealing chains fail, then helps deliver it to Takigakure. 23
  • Subdues the Nine-Tails alone during Madara’s assault, allowing Mito to seal it. 48 50

Summoning: Quintuple Rashomon

Hashirama summons five massive Rashomon gates as a defensive barrier.

  • The gates cannot fully stop a Tailed Beast Bomb fused with Susanoo’s sword, but they deflect it away from Konoha and toward a distant island. 47 48

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dark red layered armor — Warring States-era armor worn during battle. 45
  • Massive scroll — Carried across his back. 45
  • Sword — Used in close combat against Madara after both exhaust their giant techniques. 48 49

Relationships

  • Uzumaki Mito — Wife; Mito becomes the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki to protect Konoha after Hashirama subdues the beast. 47 50
  • Senju Tobirama — Younger brother and closest political partner; Tobirama manages Konoha’s defenses and administration while Hashirama handles overwhelming threats. 12 45
  • Uchiha Madara — Former friend and Konoha co-founder turned adversary; Hashirama kills Madara only after failing to dissuade him from attacking the village. 45 48 50
  • Senju Hibari — Grandson in all but direct bloodline; Hashirama is openly indulgent and protective, saving Hibari from Kakuzu and supporting his first mission. 1 12 22 23
  • Tsunade — Granddaughter; he dotes on her and takes her gambling. 2 5 28
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Trusted shinobi whom Hashirama calls “little monkey”; Hiruzen supports him during the battle against Madara and carries him after the conflict. 12 50
  • Sarutobi Sasuke — Trusted Konoha jōnin and ally in the Seven-Tails operation. 12 23

Story Role / Major Arcs

Seven-Tails Delivery Mission

Hashirama chooses to personally secure the Seven-Tails’ delivery to Takigakure because of the mission’s political importance and the danger posed by a tailed beast. 12

When Kakuzu ambushes the chakra-depleted Hibari, Hashirama intervenes, uses Deep Forest Emergence against the attacker, and then enters Sage Mode to suppress the freed Seven-Tails with True Several Thousand Hands. 22 23 He subsequently escorts the beast to Takigakure alongside Sarutobi Sasuke. 23

Konoha’s Early Development

Hashirama supports the creation of a Ninja Academy as a means of educating Konoha’s children and demonstrating the Senju Clan’s commitment to the village. 32 33 36 He later personally gives a speech when the Academy begins classes, emphasizing that the Will of Fire should pass from generation to generation. 42

He also entrusts Yamanaka Kiyono with establishing a top-tier intelligence department during Konoha’s early political restructuring. 42

Madara’s Assault on Konoha

When Madara attacks Konoha using the Nine-Tails, Hashirama orders Tobirama to protect the village while he confronts Madara directly. 45

Hashirama battles the Susanoo-armored Nine-Tails using Wood Release, Quintuple Rashomon, and Sage Mode. He shatters much of the Majestic Attire: Susanoo, suppresses the Nine-Tails, and continues fighting Madara in close combat. 47 48 49

Hibari’s Rasengan distraction creates the opening Hashirama needs to strike Madara from behind. Hashirama mortally wounds his former friend, orders that he be buried at the Valley of the End, and returns to Konoha severely weakened. 49 50
