Background
Tang San arrived in Soto City at age twelve alongside Xiao Wu after receiving six years of instruction from Yu Xiaogang. He sought admission to Shrek Academy and immediately clashed with Dai Mubai at the Rose Hotel over the final available room. Although Dai Mubai's superior soul power and physical strength forced Tang San back, Tang San refused to yield. 4
At Shrek's fourth entrance test, Tang San formed a team with Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong against Su Sanjia, Dai Mubai, and Oscar. Su Sanjia's overwhelming speed, high-level soul rings, and elementalized body exposed the gap between Tang San's group and the academy's senior students. 5 6 7 8
During the Star Dou Great Forest expedition, Tang San pursued Xiao Wu after she was taken by the Titan Giant Ape. Though badly injured, he fought and absorbed the soul ring of a Man-Faced Demon Spider, gaining the Eight Spider Lances. Su Sanjia protected him during the dangerous absorption, which became a turning point in their relationship. 18 20
Tang San later became disillusioned with Yu Xiaogang after Dugu Bo challenged the Grandmaster's theories and exposed his apparent motives. Tang San remained with Dugu Bo to study, gradually distancing himself from Yu Xiaogang before ultimately severing their master-disciple relationship after learning Yu Xiaogang's involvement in bringing Yu Yuanzhen to Shrek. 42 43 59 69
Appearance
Tang San initially appears as an ordinary-looking boy in a fitted blue outfit. He wears a jade belt set with twenty-four pieces of jade around his waist and usually carries a smile. 4

- The Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges remains his most recognizable personal item. 4 59
Personality
Tang San is intensely protective of Xiao Wu and willing to endanger himself for her. When she is taken by the Titan Giant Ape, he immediately chooses pursuit despite severe injuries and the danger posed by the forest. 18
He initially places great importance on the teacher-student bond, defending Yu Xiaogang even when Su Sanjia confronts him. However, Tang San is capable of reassessing his beliefs when confronted with evidence; Dugu Bo's accusations and Su Sanjia's example lead him to question both his cultivation path and Yu Xiaogang's intentions. 22 42 43
Tang San values loyalty and repayment of favors. After Su Sanjia protects him in the Star Dou Great Forest, Tang San accepts him as a true companion and later gives him a set of hidden weapons intended for every member of the Shrek team. 20 36
