Background / History
Academy and Early Graduation
Dule performs poorly in theory, ninjutsu, and sparring. He is also subjected to Ling’s Thousand Years of Death at the Academy, contributing to his resentment of his future teammate 57 115.
During the early-graduation selection matches, Aoba Yamashiro stabs him in the shoulder. Teacher Yamano refuses to stop the match despite the bleeding. Dule continues until Aoba is wounded too, after which both are sent to the infirmary 49.
Orochimaru selects Dule, Ling, and Anko from the graduating class. After registering as Genin, the three receive orders to survive five months on the Land of Waterfalls front without their instructor accompanying them. Dule arrives at the village gate with an enormous bundle and worries about being sent directly to war 54 56.
First Battle and Zone 81
On the fourth night of their journey, Stone Ninja ambush the squad. Dule is overwhelmed by an adult Chunin and nearly killed by two attackers. Ling saves him with Earth-Style Wall and Water Fang Bullet, then declares that Dule has exhausted his promised three rescues 57 58.
Ling subsequently watches Dule struggle against a wounded enemy rather than intervening. Dule survives with multiple kunai wounds and protests the refusal to help. Shadow clones carry him and Anko away, and the squad spends five days recovering before reaching the main camp 59.
At Zone 81, Ling teaches him the Shadow Clone Technique for trap scouting. Dule later practices it during patrols, recognizing that opportunities to learn ninjutsu are scarce for a civilian ninja. He also helps Anko restrain Ling when they mistakenly believe he intends to kill the wounded Sarutobi Miyagi 63 67.
Continued Frontline Service
Dule carries Ling during a retreat when Ling feigns exhaustion. During the Explosion Corps’ assault, Ling throws Dule and Anko to safety. Fearing Ling has died, Dule becomes tearful; when Ling returns, he attempts an emotional reunion hug that Ling rejects 82 84 85.
The absence of a dependable instructor remains a source of frustration. Dule envies the Ino-Shika-Cho squad’s stable formation and Sarutobi Jonin teacher, and later envies Ling’s instruction from Uchiha Hono. Nevertheless, he continues hoping that completing Orochimaru’s trial will earn him valuable training 90 115.
Ling eventually teaches him Great Breakthrough. Alongside Anko, Dule uses it against Stone Ninja threatening Ibiki Morino’s squad. His improved performance shocks Ibiki, who remembers him as a weaker Academy classmate 122 124 125.
Defense Zone 2
After more than four months at the front, the squad is assigned to Defense Zone 2. Dule and Anko remain behind to set traps while Ling scouts alone. When Anko proposes searching for the missing Ling, Dule argues that entering territory dangerous even to Ling would accomplish little 128 129 132.
Ling returns in time to kill a Stone Ninja hiding beneath Dule. In the ensuing fight, Dule lures another attacker into a trap and kills him, accidentally cutting his own leg in the process 132 133.
Later, following Ling’s directions toward approaching figures, Dule attacks a masked ninja with Great Breakthrough and explosive-tagged kunai. He believes the man is an Iwagakure ANBU operative until Danzo appears. Realizing he has attacked a senior Leaf official horrifies him, but Danzo leaves without responding 133.
Personality
Dule is easily frightened by stronger enemies and by Ling’s threats, but he is willing to learn. He eagerly accepts Shadow Clone instruction and continues practicing despite his poor initial results. His choice of Great Breakthrough over Wind Cutter reflects his preference for techniques that help him stay alive 56 63 67 122.
His resentment of Ling coexists with trust and attachment. He complains about Ling’s cruelty, envies his clan resources, and mocks him when opportunities arise, yet finds his presence reassuring. After the Explosion Corps attack, the prospect of never hearing Ling’s insults again genuinely upsets him 67 85 115 133.
Dule rejects Ling’s claim that perseverance need not bring a happy outcome. He wants their five-month ordeal to lead to worthwhile instruction from Orochimaru, imagining forbidden techniques, A-rank ninjutsu, or a scroll from which he can choose. He also shows concern for fellow Leaf ninja, intervening to protect Miyagi despite their rivalry 63 95 115.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release: Great Breakthrough
Dule’s principal documented elemental technique produces a forceful stream of wind from his mouth 122 133.
- Combined attack: Strengthens Anko’s Dragon Fire Technique by increasing its speed, range, and concentration 125.
- Movement suppression: Prevents a Stone Ninja commander from advancing through the gale, creating an opening for Anko 125.
- Documented scale: Produces a stream three to four meters wide that scrapes a layer from the ground 133.
- Limits: Cannot defeat the commander unaided. A masked Leaf operative’s Flame Bullet also overpowers his full-chakra attempt 125 133.
Shadow Clone Technique
Ling teaches Dule to create physical clones for scouting rather than expose himself to traps 63.
- Trap detection: Sends clones ahead to trigger or locate explosive-tag traps 63.
- Patrol practice: Continues creating scouting clones while defending Zone 81 67.
- Initial limitations: His first clone is limp and feeble; another lacks an arm. He needs several minutes before producing the second 63.
Traps and Ninja Tools
- Lures a Stone Ninja into a prepared trap and kills him, but accidentally suffers a kunai cut while triggering it 133.
- Uses explosive-tagged kunai against a masked opponent, throwing three at once; all are evaded 133.
- Fires a signal flare to request support for the wounded Miyagi, although no support squad arrives 64.
Equipment / Items
- Leaf forehead protector — Received during Genin registration 56.
- Large travel bundle — His oversized luggage prompts Ling to accuse him of trying to delay arrival at the front; Dule denies it 56.
- Kunai and explosive tags — Used in direct attacks and traps 133.
- Signal flare — Used to call for assistance in Zone 81 64.
Relationships
- Uchiha Ling — Academy classmate, teammate, rescuer, and informal ninjutsu teacher. Dule resents his bullying and privileges but relies on his protection and trusts him to support dangerous training battles 63 85 115 124.
- Mitaraishi Anko — Teammate and field captain. She regularly intervenes when Ling frightens him; their coordinated Fire and Wind Release becomes his clearest combat success 56 61 109 125.
- Orochimaru — Assigned Jonin instructor. His absence leaves Dule longing for guidance, while the prospect of eventual instruction keeps Dule invested in surviving the trial 56 57 115 128.
- Teacher Yamano — Academy teacher who forces Dule to continue fighting after a serious shoulder wound 49.
- Aoba Yamashiro — Opponent in the early-graduation selection match; both injure each other and are sent to the infirmary 49.
- Ibiki Morino — Former classmate whose confidence suffers after witnessing Dule’s improved elemental combat. Ibiki attributes Dule’s survival advantages to having Ling and Anko as teammates 125.
- Sarutobi Miyagi — Rival whom Dule helps protect when he suspects Ling might harm him 63.
