Background / History

Earlier service and Nawaki’s death

Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya grew up and fought together. The Sannin earned their title after surviving an encounter with Hanzō during the Second Shinobi World War; Danzō later describes that encounter as a defeat 56 107 127.

His former student Nawaki, Tsunade’s younger brother, died in front of him. Shinku Yuhi identifies this loss as the cause of Orochimaru’s drastic change in temperament and his peculiar attitude toward supervising Genin 56.

Anko’s father became Orochimaru’s subordinate after surviving the battle against Hanzō, aided by his unusual resistance to poison. He later died protecting Orochimaru, two years before Anko’s frontline deployment 57 112.

Recruitment of three Genin teams

Under pressure from Hiruzen and Danzō, Orochimaru accepts nine graduates from three Academy year groups. The village assigns him the top student from each year; his recruits include Uchiha Ling, Mitaraishi Anko, Dule Jiong, and Sarutobi Miyagi 54 55 61.

Rather than administer an assessment or lead introductory D-rank missions, he grants them Genin status and sends all three teams to the Land of Waterfalls battlefield without accompanying them. His condition is explicit: anyone who survives five months earns another meeting and the right to receive his instruction 54 56.

Danzō’s private account identifies Anko as Orochimaru’s original choice from her class, with Ling added at the last moment for an unexplained reason. Ling later suspects that his potential Sharingan interested Orochimaru, but this motive remains unconfirmed 61 98.

Research under Danzō

Danzō draws Orochimaru into Root and invests both Root and Shimura clan resources in his research. The Shimura elders hope that a clan disciple will eventually inherit Orochimaru’s experimental resources, ninjutsu collection, and political influence 60.

These experiments include Sharingan transplantation and attempts to transplant Hashirama cells. Danzō receives a functioning Sharingan, but the eye continuously drains his chakra. He keeps Orochimaru away from the battlefield so that the more dangerous Hashirama-cell work can continue 126.

By the twenty-seventh experimental round, Danzō considers the procedure substantially safer; a child had already survived the seventeenth round. After an alarming encounter with Nagato, he demands that Orochimaru bring transplant equipment to the front immediately 126 132.

Frontline appointment and the promised reward

Orochimaru is appointed deputy commander of the Land of Waterfalls front and travels with several hundred reinforcements. Reviewing the battlefield reports, he learns that only Anko’s three-person squad and Sarutobi Miyagi remain alive from his original nine recruits 134.

At the Main Camp, he establishes a nine-tent laboratory compound and summons the four survivors individually. His promised “unparalleled reward” is an early experimental cursed seal. He praises Ling’s Jōnin-level strength at nine years old, then extends his neck and bites him to implant the Cursed Seal of Heaven 134 135.

The students become observation subjects under She Ci’s supervision. Ling secretly uses Chakra Dragon to contain the seal’s harmful components while pretending to remain incapacitated, preventing Orochimaru’s staff from recognizing his resistance 135 136.

Appearance

Orochimaru is tall and lean, with black hair, a deathly pale face, and narrow, snake-like pupils 45 54.

  • Eyes: Cold, slit-pupilled eyes that scrutinize both subordinates and prospective subjects 45 135.
  • Voice: Hoarse 54.
  • Serpentine features: Can extend his neck and lengthen his fangs during cursed-seal implantation 135.

Personality

Orochimaru’s fascination with ninjutsu is described as an end in itself, rather than merely a means of gaining practical advantages. Anko recalls her father repeatedly speaking of his obsession with research 59.

His dealings with subordinates follow equivalent exchange: merit earns rewards, while mistakes earn punishment. Ling consequently believes that providing useful research contributions offers a more reliable route to Orochimaru’s support than personal loyalty alone 60 71.

His mentorship is detached and severe. He treats battlefield survival as a prerequisite for instruction and later turns the surviving students into experimental subjects. Even his assistant is uneasy because the promised cursed-seal reward is not yet ready 54 134 135.

Orochimaru also regards mortality with dark amusement. On hearing of Danzō’s urgent transplant request, he compares the aging advisor to an old wolf watching younger, more vigorous rivals 133.

Abilities & Skills

Five-Nature Ninjutsu

Orochimaru is identified as a five-nature shinobi with an exceptional understanding of ninjutsu 53 71.

  • Uses a broad range of techniques to torment opponents on the battlefield 53.
  • His mastery exemplifies the efficiency of countering an enemy’s elemental technique with the appropriate nature transformation 53.
  • Ling deliberately cultivates a five-nature reputation to demonstrate his potential value to Orochimaru’s research 65 71.

Snake Summoning and Hidden Shadow Snake Hands

Orochimaru summons powerful giant snakes from Ryūchi Cave, unlike the ordinary snakes available to Anko and her father from its outskirts 59.

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: His signature snake technique, credited with killing countless enemies 59.
  • Training rewards: Anko’s father earned this valuable technique after years of cautious service; Anko inherited it from him 60 61.
  • Reputation: Knowledge of the technique is treated by Shimura Du as evidence of Orochimaru’s favor 60.

Cursed Seal of Heaven

Orochimaru implants the seal through a bite, injecting its components into the recipient’s bloodstream. Ling’s seal appears as a three-tomoe mark on his neck 135.

  • Combines Jūgo’s cells, natural energy, Orochimaru’s chakra, and fragments of his spiritual or mental energy 135 136.
  • Draws in natural energy to sustain itself; Orochimaru’s initial chakra contribution does not replenish 136.
  • Produces a faint amount of senjutsu chakra through the interaction of natural energy, Jūgo’s cells, and Orochimaru’s mental fragments 136.
  • The early version causes dangerous toxicity, pain, unconsciousness, and bodily mutations; unsuccessful subjects typically die 135 136.
  • Ling’s Chakra Dragon can absorb Orochimaru’s chakra and mental fragments, as well as Jūgo’s cellular tissue, providing a countermeasure Orochimaru’s observers do not recognize 136.
Subject Documented response
Mitaraishi Anko Wakes with severe neck and head pain; graded A for her high degree of integration 136.
Sarutobi Miyagi Briefly develops fangs and a shoulder bone growth before returning to normal; graded B 136.
Dule Jiong Remains unconscious during the documented observation period 136.
Uchiha Ling Secretly contains the toxins and clears Orochimaru’s chakra from the seal; staff attribute his comparatively mild symptoms to his constitution and reserves 135 136.

Transplantation Research

Orochimaru develops the transplant procedures supporting Danzō’s pursuit of greater vitality 126.

  • Sharingan transplantation: Considered the simplest of his transplant experiments; Danzō’s transplanted eye functions but continuously consumes chakra 126.
  • Hashirama-cell transplantation: Much more dangerous because the cells multiply aggressively and kill most hosts 126.
  • His research consumes substantial resources, including children supplied to his laboratory through Danzō’s support 84.

Mobility and Strategic Analysis

  • Body Flicker Technique: Uses it to leave immediately after announcing the graduates’ survival assignment 54.
  • Strategic assessment: Identifies Konoha’s mutual-defense treaty with the Land of Fire as an obstacle to trading territory for time. He also recognizes the country’s lack of natural barriers as a cause of its overextended defensive front 134.

Equipment / Facilities

  • Underground laboratory: Located near a secluded area outside the village’s busier spaces 45.
  • Main Camp laboratory compound: Nine tents furnished with laboratory tables, culture tanks, and other equipment transported through sealing techniques 135.
  • Transplant equipment: Danzō orders him to bring a complete set to the front 132.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and Third Hokage; persuades him to accept Genin despite his reluctance 54.
  • Shimura Danzō — Patron, research sponsor, and transplant recipient. His support comes with surveillance: after Du’s death, he orders a replacement agent to earn Orochimaru’s trust and monitor him 60 86 126.
  • Nawaki — Former student whose death profoundly changes Orochimaru’s temperament and approach to mentorship 56.
  • Mitaraishi Anko — Personally selected student with ties through her father; becomes a highly integrated cursed-seal subject 61 136.
  • Anko’s father — Early subordinate who earned Hidden Shadow Snake Hands and later died protecting him 57 60.
  • Uchiha Ling — Student and experimental subject who seeks Orochimaru’s backing while concealing abilities and countermeasures that could make him a research target 71 89 135.
  • Shimura Du — Would-be disciple carrying his clan’s hopes of inheriting Orochimaru’s resources and influence; his belief that other students are favored helps destroy his confidence 60.
  • She Ci — Trusted medical assistant who handles intelligence, experimental administration, and subject monitoring 134 135 136.
  • Tsunade and Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin with whom he grew up and fought 56.
