Background / History

Jiraiya is a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi and carries on Hiruzen’s trust in Qingchuan Tianming after the Third Hokage’s death. Although he initially approaches Tianming because the boy is an unknown and potentially dangerous variable, he chooses guidance and surveillance over force, warning that betrayal of Konoha will not be tolerated. 63

When Konoha’s advisers nominate him as Fifth Hokage, Jiraiya refuses and instead volunteers to locate a more suitable candidate—Tsunade. 62 During the search, he trains Naruto Uzumaki and accepts Tianming as a second disciple. 63 68
