Background / History
Zhou Bai was at home when he was suddenly transported into a dark corridor and pursued by an unknown monster. As he fled, his body regressed from that of a young adult to that of a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old. Cornered in a small room, he accepted an unseen woman’s offer of help and received the auxiliary cultivation system that would later identify itself as the Nine Calamities of Heaven and Man. 1
He subsequently awakened in an unfamiliar underground base, physically thin and weak in his younger body. He was unable to explain where he came from, discovered he was speaking a language absent from his memories, and began investigating the base’s secrets rather than trusting its inhabitants or its rules. 2 7 8
While in the base, Zhou Bai learned to convert Laziness Qi into cultivation progress. He formed a tentative alliance with Alice, developed a complicated partnership with the system consciousness Christina, and became attached to Elsa. 8 12 13
After gaining access to the outside world, Zhou Bai traveled to Donghua City and entered the Donghua Dao School examination. He presented himself to Jing Xiu as a wilderness survivor, placed first in the entrance rankings, and enrolled alongside her. 26 30 32
Appearance
Zhou Bai awakens in a younger body resembling his seventeen- or eighteen-year-old self. At that time, he is thin, weak, and dressed in a white robe. 2
- His body is repeatedly altered by the Buzhou star points, becoming far stronger and more resilient than its initial frail condition. 35 41 44
- During the cultivation of Buzhou—Skin, his old epidermis peels away and is replaced by tougher skin with a faint dark sheen. 41
- Buzhou—Bone leaves him feeling physically heavier due to his strengthened skeletal structure. 44
Personality
Zhou Bai is wary, skeptical, and highly survival-oriented. He refuses to expose the full extent of his system’s potential, declines to raise his Primordial Spirit Value past 99 before the entrance exam, and generally treats unknown people and institutions with suspicion. 7 24 31
He is also opportunistic and shamelessly pragmatic. Once he discovers that neglecting duties can generate Laziness Qi, he experiments with the system’s rules, has Christina perform chores for him, sleeps in class, and skips lectures to cultivate more efficiently. 24 38 40
Despite this behavior, Zhou Bai is not indifferent to others. He helps Zhang Aidao’s father while the man mistakes him for his son, cares for Elsa despite limited food points, and is deeply affected by deaths and mutations around him. These experiences harden his resolve to gain enough strength to fight Heavenly Demons and monsters himself. 24 32 36 46
Abilities & Skills
Nine Calamities of Heaven and Man
Zhou Bai possesses an auxiliary cultivation system linked to Christina, which tracks his Daoization Degree, Primordial Spirit Value, Divine Map, and Laziness Qi. 12 13
- Converts Laziness Qi directly into cultivation progress, allowing Zhou Bai to bypass conventional cultivation methods. 24 35
- Initially gains up to 200 Laziness Qi per day from lying down. 12
- Can gain additional Laziness Qi by neglecting reasonable responsibilities or having others complete duties he should perform. 24
- Does not reward repeated use of the same task in one day or promises that cannot realistically be fulfilled. 24
- Prevents Zhou Bai from studying while he is actively gaining Laziness Qi through skipping class. 39
Buzhou Physical Cultivation
The outer layer of Zhou Bai’s Supreme Unity Disc strengthens his body through the Buzhou star points. 35 37 41 44
- Buzhou increases his strength, speed, endurance, and explosive power enough that he accidentally destroys a chair while adjusting to his new body. 35
- Buzhou—Foundation greatly improves recovery, allowing him to regain more than half his stamina after only a short rest. 37
- Buzhou—Skin gives him substantial resistance to impact; even a punch at half his own strength causes him virtually no pain. 41
- Buzhou—Bone reinforces his skeleton and marrow, enabling feats such as overturning a small car and punching through a wall without recoil injury. 44
- Instant cultivation causes severe physical strain; the Bone star point’s rapid transformation is painful enough to make him faint. 44
Sumeru Defensive Formation
Sumeru adjusts Zhou Bai’s internal Spiritual Machine through posture, producing a defensive formation rather than a purely physical enhancement. 44 48
- His defense varies by posture: standing like iron, sitting like steel, and lying like a mountain. 44 48
- His next star point, Sumeru—Immovable, remains inaccessible despite his 99 Primordial Spirit Value due to insufficient Primordial Spirit requirements. 49
- Zhou Bai uses extremely rapid prone movement to evade the aberration Jianxing during their confrontation. 50
Willpower and Comprehension
Zhou Bai’s strongest recognized qualities before enrolling are his resistance to temptation and his unusual comprehension. 27 30
- During the Heavenly Road test, he refuses to accelerate for an illusory increase in Primordial Spirit Power, earning Lü Chongyang’s praise for his “will of steel.” 27
- His written response to the Heaven-Stealing Diagram impresses the examiners enough to place him first, ahead of Zuo Dao despite Zuo Dao’s higher cultivation. 29 30
- His theoretical foundation is initially poor compared with classmates trained from childhood, so he compensates through independent study and Christina’s tutoring. 38 40 47 48
Relationships
- Christina — The white-cat consciousness connected to Zhou Bai’s auxiliary system. They constantly argue, but she teaches him cultivation theory, cultivates alongside him, and saves him by attacking Jianxing’s spirit form. 12 47 48 50
- Elsa — A blonde girl from the underground base who later becomes a Shiba Inu. Zhou Bai treats her as a companion and is responsible for her food and safety. 2 21 32 36
- Jing Xiu — Fellow entrance examinee and Donghua Dao School classmate. She admires Zhou Bai’s willpower, assists him after the Heavenly Road test, and provides her class notes while he studies independently. 27 31 42
- Lü Chongyang — Entrance examiner and Zhou Bai’s teacher. He values Zhou Bai’s willpower but clashes with his habitual absence from class; ultimately, he grants Zhou Bai two months to prove his self-directed cultivation path. 27 39 46 47
- Li Xiuzhu — A detective and ally who dispels the illusion trapping Zhou Bai, investigates the paper-effigy case, and later saves him from Jianxing/Sakurako. 45 46 50
- Zhang Aidao — A helpful acquaintance who explains the Dao School entrance requirements to Zhou Bai. Zhang later dies fighting Heavenly Demons, strengthening Zhou Bai’s determination to become stronger. 21 32
- Zuo Dao — Zhou Bai’s principal academic rival. Zuo Dao places second in the entrance examination and challenges Zhou Bai to improve before their next assessment. 30 36
- Jianxing / Sakurako — A classmate who approaches Zhou Bai under the identity of Jianxing. He is later revealed to be the aberration Sakurako and attacks Zhou Bai out of jealousy and corruption. 49 50
