Background / History

Elsa was one of the children raised in Dr. Zhuang's underground shelter. When Zhou Bai awakened there, she was a blonde girl in a white dress who had been eating his biscuits; she immediately became curious about him and followed him through the base asking about the outside world and food 2.

Dr. Zhuang assigned Elsa to share a room with Zhou Bai and help him acclimate to the shelter. Though Zhou Bai initially considered her simple-minded, Dr. Zhuang stated that she was intelligent but exceptionally innocent. Elsa knew basic details of the base, including that only Dr. Zhuang could access the fifth underground level, and warned Zhou Bai not to leave their room at night 3 4 7.

During the base's food shortage, Elsa believed her appetite might have caused the crisis. After Zhou Bai reassured her, she resolved to eat less and stop taking his food 13 14. She later saw the secret chamber containing children’s corpses, including an Elsa duplicate, and was overwhelmed by the revelation 15 16.

When the Snake Monster massacred the children, Elsa confronted it despite being terrified, throwing a steel pipe and demanding to know why it was killing people. The monster impaled her with a blade of black mist 17. She survived long enough to be recovered by the Heavenly Court Rescue Team, but was critically injured and undergoing Demonization from Polluted Spiritual Machine infection 19.

The rescue team suppressed Elsa’s Demonization but left her fully transformed into a Shiba Inu. Zhou Bai chose to keep her, hoping that Dr. Zhuang’s research data could eventually provide a cure 21 22. She subsequently traveled with Zhou Bai to Donghua City and remained with him at Donghua Dao School 23 32.

Appearance

Elsa’s appearance changed drastically after Demonization.

• Human form — A little blonde girl with sapphire-blue eyes, dressed in white 2.
• Demonizing state — During rescue, she was covered in golden fur and restrained with rectangular runic charms 19.
• Current form — A smiling, tail-wagging Shiba Inu 21 22.
• Distinguishing behavior — Often drools, bares her teeth happily, wags her tail, and eagerly responds to food or a leash 22 35 42.

Personality

Elsa is innocent, affectionate, and intensely food-motivated. As a child, she repeatedly complained of hunger, tried to claim Zhou Bai’s meals, and could become too focused on eating to answer questions 3 7. Dr. Zhuang had to limit her food because she would continue eating past the point of being full 3.

Despite this gluttony, Elsa is sensitive to others. She alerted Dr. Zhuang when Zhou Bai had nightmares, worried that she had consumed too much of the base’s food, and later tried to give Zhou Bai her remaining rice because she believed he needed it more 6 14 36.

Her courage emerges when those around her are threatened. Although frightened and crying during the Snake Monster’s attack, she stood up to it in defense of the other children 17.

Abilities & Traits

Demonization and Beast Form

Elsa was infected by Polluted Spiritual Machine and survived in a fully animalized state after the rescue team suppressed her Demonization.

• She has transformed into a Shiba Inu and is no longer considered dangerous by her rescuers 22.
• Complete animal transformation normally leaves victims with insufficient intelligence to return to human form; no successful recovery case was known at the time 22.
• Elsa retains more awareness than an ordinary dog, including recognition of Zhou Bai and limited speech such as “Zhou Bai” and “hungry” 22 23.
• Her human intelligence is severely diminished; Zhou Bai observes only limited signs of it after her transformation 22.

Limited Comprehension

Elsa can understand basic instructions and participate in simple tasks.

• She responds to commands involving food, waiting, and walking 13 42.
• Christina taught her to fetch objects, including bringing Zhou Bai a broom 48.
• She prevented Christina from escaping by causing her to return to Zhou Bai’s consciousness 24.

Relationships

• Zhou Bai — Roommate in the underground base and later her owner-like caretaker. He protects, feeds, walks, and seeks a way to restore her human form 3 22 36 42.
• Dr. Zhuang — Her teacher and caretaker at the underground base. He monitored her food intake and assigned her to help Zhou Bai adjust to the shelter 3.
• Christina — Initially assigned by Zhou Bai to care for Elsa after her transformation. The cat supervises and teaches her basic tasks, though Christina resents the arrangement 22 23 48.
• Alice — Fellow base child. Alice treated Elsa gently and used a biscuit to keep her waiting while she spoke privately with Zhou Bai 13.
• Bandu — Fellow base child whom Elsa confronted after he rudely bumped into Zhou Bai 7.

Trivia

• Elsa’s enormous appetite was notable even before her Demonization; Zhou Bai later considered it possible that Dr. Zhuang’s experiments were connected to her unusual survival and hunger, though this remained speculation 3 22.
• She chewed up Zhou Bai’s towel and scattered his toiletries, then hid beneath a sofa when discovered 35.
• She became distressed by Ba Serpent Bone Soup, which Zhou Bai could not afford to buy 35.
