Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Great Stillness — third realm of Mount Mao Stillness Practice 162 Achieved after returning to Mount Mao’s main sect and cultivating in seclusion for one year; he subsequently tested his corpse-sealing, mirror, ritual, and paper-arts techniques. 162

Background / History

Uncle Nine was entrusted by Ren Fa to relocate Old Master Ren’s grave. He discovered that the Ren family’s auspicious Dragonfly Touches Water Point had been altered into a site that gathered yin energy and baleful aura. Recognizing the signs of impending corpse transformation, he urged immediate cremation, but Ren Fa refused on ancestral grounds. 107 111

Old Master Ren later became a zombie, escaped, and killed numerous members of the Ren family. Uncle Nine accepted responsibility for failing to prevent the disaster, even while Ren Fa publicly blamed him. 111 112

Huang Bai’s arrival changed the course of the case. After recognizing the profound lightning intent in Huang Bai’s Five Thunder Talisman, Uncle Nine acknowledged him as a true master rather than dismissing him for his youth. The two Daoists joined forces to destroy Old Master Ren and investigate the sorcerer responsible for the corrupted burial site. 111 114

Uncle Nine accompanied Huang Bai on a night journey into the underworld, where the Judge of Guangfu helped them identify Luo Yinshan as the culprit. They later confronted Luo Yinshan together; Uncle Nine restrained the possessing ghost with his Bagua mirror while Huang Bai defeated him. 116 118

After Huang Bai departed, Uncle Nine reflected on the gap between their attainments and abandoned his plans for retirement. He returned to Mount Mao for a year of seclusion, eventually advancing to Great Stillness. 119 162

Appearance

Uncle Nine is a short-haired Daoist with joined eyebrows, an upright and stern expression, and a composed bearing. 162

  • Usually carries a peachwood sword, coin sword, compass, ink line, Eight-Trigram Mirror, and Three Pure Ones Bell. 162
  • Wears Daoist robes when conducting rituals and combatting supernatural threats. 110 162

Personality

Uncle Nine is conscientious and accountable. When Old Master Ren’s corpse transformation led to deaths, he did not evade blame and committed himself to subduing the zombie despite Ren Fa’s abuse. 111

He is strict with his disciples and deeply concerned with Mount Mao’s reputation. Wen Cai’s prank against Huang Bai and Qiu Sheng’s involvement with the ghost Xiao Yu left him furious and humiliated, prompting severe discipline. 112 113

Though initially constrained by traditional distinctions between Daoist lineages, he readily recognizes genuine skill. He treats Huang Bai as a fellow Daoist after witnessing his talismans and thunder arts, then continues cultivating after realizing that his own studies had become stagnant. 111 113 119

  • Long Breath — the initial stage, marked by sustained breathing. 116
  • Inner Breath — a minor stage in which a single exhale and inhale can last a quarter hour. 116
