As everyone knew, Naruto was also known as the Legend of Eyes, a story about the Ōtsutsuki Clan family loving and killing one another.
The world of Naruto placed immense importance on bloodlines. Civilian ninja without bloodlines were nothing more than cannon fodder. Eight Gates Guy was the absolute limit a civilian ninja could reach, yet even then, Eight Gates Guy was only a fleeting flash. After nearly kicking out the ending with one kick, he had to die immediately afterward. And throughout the ninja world's centuries of history, civilian ninja who could reach Guy's level were virtually nonexistent.
As a member of the Uzumaki Clan, Uzumaki Shusen could be considered to possess some bloodline inherited from the Kaguya Clan. However, that bloodline was hardly remarkable, merely average. In terms of talent and strength, he could not compare to his older sister Mito, nor could he compare to Sarutobi Sasuke or Hyuga Tenjin, much less Madara and Hashirama, the reincarnations of Indra and Asura.
Therefore, to walk the path toward becoming the strongest, he had set his sights on the Sharingan and the Byakugan. His talent might be mediocre, but he firmly believed that science could change destiny.
Orochimaru was the one who had inspired him in this regard.
In the original story, Orochimaru had only come to his senses after being utterly crushed by Itachi. His powerful ninjutsu was simply worthless before the Mangekyō Sharingan! That was why he later set his sights on Sasuke, scheming tirelessly to possess Sasuke's body so he could evolve eyes like Itachi's.
Unfortunately, Orochimaru had miscalculated one thing. He did not know that Sasuke carried Indra's chakra within him, and his possession ultimately ended in failure.
"The Mangekyō Sharingan is certainly powerful..."
In the reflection of a glass test tube, Uzumaki Shusen stroked the three-tomoe Sharingan in his left eye and muttered to himself.
"But the Byakugan is no less impressive."
Uzumaki Shusen reached up and touched the Byakugan in his right eye.
Having thoroughly familiarized himself with the original plot, he knew that the Byakugan's ultimate form, the Tenseigan, was not inferior in the slightest to the Sharingan's ultimate form, the Rinnegan. Toneri's Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion could even split the moon in half with a single strike!
"I should count myself fortunate. The Hyuga haven't developed the Caged Bird yet, or else I could never have obtained so many Byakugan."
Uzumaki Shusen sighed emotionally. This was a tremendous stroke of luck for him. Before the Caged Bird came into existence, he needed to acquire as many Byakugan as possible and prepare for the grand undertaking of fusing a Tenseigan.
Sometimes, he even wondered whether the Hyuga's Caged Bird system had been created because he kept gouging out their eyes.
"Come to think of it, I've worn out Black Zetsu's name by now. Both the Uchiha and Hyuga hate him to the bone."
"If things follow the original plot, when the aged Madara creates Black Zetsu with Yin-Yang Release in the darkness beneath the earth, what sort of reaction will he have?"
At that thought, Uzumaki Shusen could not help worrying for Black Zetsu, worried that Black Zetsu would never get the chance to have a heart-to-heart talk with Madara in the future.
On the worktable, two Shadow Clones were intently conducting fusion experiments, completely undistracted by Uzumaki Shusen's arrival.
The Shadow Clone on the left was analyzing a one-tomoe Sharingan. He placed it in a specially prepared solution, carefully used medical ninjutsu to strip away the ocular technique energy contained within, then fused that extracted energy into another three-tomoe Sharingan in the solution.
This was an extremely delicate process. Throughout the entire procedure, the Shadow Clone worked with utmost caution and slowness. One wrong move would cause both Sharingan to collapse.
More than an hour later, the one-tomoe Sharingan finally finished fusing with the three-tomoe Sharingan. With Kagura's Mind's Eye, Uzumaki Shusen could clearly sense that the fused three-tomoe Sharingan emitted somewhat stronger ocular technique energy than before.
"After so many earlier failures, the experiments have finally gotten on track."
Uzumaki Shusen let out a breath. Fusing Sharingan was a bold, wildly imaginative idea he had come up with himself. He did want a Sharingan, but not an ordinary tomoe Sharingan. He wanted a Mangekyō Sharingan, even the ultimate Rinnegan!
The ideal was full, but reality was harsh. There were no ready-made Mangekyō Sharingan for him to gouge out on the battlefield. The current Uchiha Clan only had its patriarch, Uchiha Tajima, possessing a Mangekyō Sharingan. Even Madara and Izuna only had three-tomoe Sharingan.
Over four years on the battlefield, Uzumaki Shusen had gouged out more than two hundred Sharingan. Only six had been three-tomoe. One had been transplanted into his left eye, while the remaining five had been used in his research experiments. Three had been destroyed during experimentation.
While studying the Sharingan once, Uzumaki Shusen had accidentally fused two one-tomoe Sharingan and unexpectedly discovered that the fused Sharingan possessed stronger ocular technique energy.
From that moment onward, Uzumaki Shusen had opened the door to a new world. He devoted all his energy to eye-fusion experiments. After a full year and a half of failures and refinements, wasting more than a hundred Sharingan and Byakugan in the process, he had finally mastered the technique of fusing eyes.
The two Shadow Clones before him possessed his memories and experience, so there was no difference between them fusing eyes and Uzumaki Shusen doing it himself. Moreover, Shadow Clones would not betray him, so Uzumaki Shusen trusted them completely.
The reason Uzumaki Shusen had begun considering eye fusion was that he had been forced into it. Since he could not obtain the Rinnegan or Tenseigan through conventional methods, he could only find another path himself. He did not know what would happen if large numbers of Sharingan were fused together, but so far, the fused Sharingan's ocular power had indeed grown stronger.
This was a tangible benefit he could plainly see. By now, the three-tomoe Sharingan soaking in the solution had fused with four two-tomoe Sharingan and nine one-tomoe Sharingan. Uzumaki Shusen estimated that even Uchiha Madara's three-tomoe ocular power might not surpass this eye.
After quietly watching the two Shadow Clones conduct their experiments for a while, Uzumaki Shusen's hands began to itch as well.
He put on sterile gloves and took a Byakugan and a two-tomoe Sharingan from two test tubes.
Today, he intended to conduct an extremely bold, innovative experiment.
The idea had long existed in his mind. Previously, however, he felt that his experimental materials were too scarce to support multiple lines of research. But tonight, he had once again returned from the battlefield with a full harvest, enough to permit a small amount of loss.
Uzumaki Shusen placed both eyes into a specially prepared solution and used medical ninjutsu. A hazy green glow covered his palms as he patiently and meticulously stripped the ocular technique energy contained within the Byakugan, guiding it to fuse with the two-tomoe Sharingan.
That was right—this was Uzumaki Shusen's bold innovation!
Since fusing Sharingan with Sharingan and Byakugan with Byakugan could strengthen ocular power, what marvelous sparks would fly from fusing a Sharingan with a Byakugan?
Could two different kinds of eyes fuse into an entirely new kind of eye?
Uzumaki Shusen held his breath and focused, carefully beginning the fusion process.
