Background / History

Shusen was born into the Uzumaki Clan during the Warring States Period. He first went to war at five years old and survived because his older sister, Mito, protected him. The brutality of that experience gave him a single overriding conviction: survive at any cost. 3

Considering his inherited bloodline average compared with figures such as Mito, Hashirama, and Madara, Shusen pursued strength through research rather than natural talent. He developed techniques including Multiple Shadow Clones, Five-Elements Cowardly Escape, and the Rasengan before turning to the Sharingan and Byakugan as the basis for artificial evolution. 3 4

For years, Shusen operated on battlefields under the identity of Black Zetsu, harvesting eyes from fallen Uchiha and Hyuga clansmen. His underground laboratory held more than one hundred Sharingan and more than one hundred Byakugan, while Shadow Clones performed and refined his fusion experiments. 1 3 4

His first Sharingan–Byakugan fusion was unstable and nearly exploded. After acquiring Hashirama Cells, he used them as a buffer to stabilize the two conflicting ocular powers, creating the Demon Eye and proving his method viable. 5 28

Personality

Shusen is driven first by self-preservation. Growing up in wartime made him intensely cautious, secretive, and willing to desecrate corpses or manipulate others if doing so advances his survival and research. He continually reviews his own mistakes and avoids revealing his dōjutsu because exposure could endanger both himself and the Uzumaki Clan. 3 5 37

He is also patient and methodical. Shusen spent years gathering eyes, more than a decade pursuing the Rinnegan and Tenseigan, and thirty-seven days carefully integrating Indra chakra with Hashirama Cells. 4 137 138

Despite his ruthlessness, Shusen increasingly acts as a protector. As the Masked Hero, he aids allied clans, opposes Black Zetsu, and insists that he can help guard the shinobi world.
