Background / History
Childhood and ideals
Hashirama lost two younger brothers during the Warring States Period. His seven-year-old brother Kawarama was surrounded and killed by Hagoromo and Uchiha shinobi, while another brother, Itama, later died at Uchiha hands. These losses led Hashirama to advocate a truce rather than revenge, though his father Butsuma rejected the idea. 105
While reflecting on the meaning of war by a river, Hashirama met Uchiha Madara. The two became friends through their shared dream of ending the era of clan warfare and creating a place where shinobi children would not have to die in battle. 105
Warring States Period
Hashirama was recognized as a gifted Wood Release user while still young. In person, he was awkward and visibly nervous around Uzumaki Mito despite his fearsome battlefield reputation. 22
He defended Mito from Kaguya Wuzhan shortly after the Kaguya Clan signed a truce, using Wood Release: Hōbi Technique to block the attacker’s bone projectiles. 25 Hashirama, Mito, Tobirama, and Shusen subsequently became sworn siblings, with Hashirama recognized as the eldest. 26
At the Ninjasteel Mine, Hashirama attempted to negotiate an equal division of the resource with Madara, but Madara refused and initiated battle. Hashirama’s Wood Release helped force the Uchiha retreat after the Uzumaki Clan joined the Senju side. 37 38
Hashirama later married Mito, joining the Senju and Uzumaki families. 64 65
Senjutsu training
While reinforcing the Sunset Clan against the Libra Clan, Hashirama fought the clan’s Sage Transformation leader. His Wood Release techniques could restrain and drain the enemy’s chakra, but the opponent repeatedly broke free through brute strength and regeneration. 69 70
After fighting alongside the masked Shusen, Hashirama investigated Shikkotsu Forest and received instruction from the Slug Sage. His Sage Body allowed him to progress at extraordinary speed: he learned to balance natural energy within a day, entered Sage Mode after ten days, and completely mastered senjutsu after a month. 73 75
Founding of Konoha
After becoming Senju Clan Head, Hashirama rejected Ryū’s invitation for the Senju Clan to join Uzushio Village. He remained committed to his own vision: a village in which all shinobi clans could coexist as equals rather than serve a single clan. 105
His effort to unite the clans was initially met with widespread suspicion. Many clans believed that his proposed village would make them vassals of the Senju Clan, especially after his overwhelming power became publicly known. 154 156
With Shusen’s intervention, the Hyuga, Sarutobi, and numerous other clans agreed to support Hashirama’s cause. The collective support enabled the clans to establish Konoha, with the Fire Country daimyō providing funding, food, and labor. 156 158 173
Hashirama repeatedly declined the position of Hokage and nominated Madara instead, believing Madara was more capable of administration. The clan heads distrusted Madara, however, and unanimously elected Hashirama as Konoha’s First Hokage. 174
Conflict with Madara
Hashirama continued to seek reconciliation with Madara even as Madara prepared to oppose Konoha. He appealed to their childhood promise and proposed that the Senju and Uchiha build their village together. 165
Following Madara’s defection, Hashirama investigated the Uchiha Clan’s situation alongside Konoha’s leaders. He learned that Madara feared the Senju–Uchiha conflict would return after Hashirama’s eventual departure from office. 183
When Madara attacked Konoha’s Ninja Academy, Hashirama used Sage Art: Super-Sized Wood Release: Hōbi Technique to shield the academy from Susanoo projectiles. Madara’s willingness to endanger the village convinced Hashirama that he could no longer avoid killing his former friend. 190 191
Appearance
Hashirama is a tall young man with an honest-looking face. In Sage Mode, dark markings appear around his eyes. 22 116

- Dark eye markings when using Sage Mode. 116
- Often appears composed and imposing in battle despite his ordinarily awkward demeanor. 22 116
Personality
Hashirama is compassionate, idealistic, and deeply opposed to the cycle of revenge that defined the Warring States Period. The deaths of his brothers shaped his belief that war only brought pain to every side, leading him to seek peace even with the Uchiha. 105
He is notably awkward and self-effacing in personal settings, particularly around Mito. He dismisses praise for his own strength and becomes visibly flustered around her, sharply contrasting his confidence and authority in battle. 22 38
Although often perceived as soft-hearted, Hashirama can be decisive when his principles or people are threatened. He confronted the four daimyō over their responsibility for war, declared that he would protect Fire Country from invasion, and ultimately resolved to kill Madara when Konoha was endangered. 114 116 191
Hashirama considers himself poorly suited to administration and relied heavily on Tobirama while leading the Senju Clan. He initially believed Madara would be a better Hokage, despite Madara’s hostility toward the Senju. 174
