Background

Chen Lingxi was born into the Chen Family of Linchuan. His father served as a Principal Fifth Rank official in the Ministry of Rites, and the family lived peacefully until Rong Chun’s Mirror Listening words implicated both the Chen and his mother’s family. His parents were executed, while Chen Lingxi was sent to the Criminal Law Bureau as an official slave. He spent two years in the Inverted Room of the Baosu Marquis Residence struggling to survive. 146

His father, Chen Yanzhi, was a literary official whose Ode to Cold Plum Blossoms received the Sage’s praise. Chen Lingxi himself earned scholarly honors, which helped spare him from execution when his family was destroyed. His mother’s family is identified as the Zhong Family. 5 23 174

Chen Lingxi also possesses memories of a previous life as a modern man. These memories awakened two years before the opening of the story and intertwined with those of his nineteen years in Great Li. His experience in the business world of his previous life contributes to his ability to recognize concealed hostility. 1 41

During his early childhood, the Chen Family rented a home in Willow Street Alley while his father served in Yuan River Prefecture. The neighboring Xi Family included Xi Yu and her younger sister Xi Lan. Chen Lingxi and Xi Yu planted the willow that later became an important source of cultivation opportunities. He left the alley at five years old, and the district subsequently suffered a deadly plague. 23 137

While serving in the Baosu Marquis Residence’s western courtyard, Chen Lingxi gained access to the Divine Chamber and awakened Sight-Roaming. He secretly used an incense burner handled by Lin Suri to observe Lin’s cultivation, then copied the Breath-Absorption Method from what he saw. 2 3 20

He secured his move to the western courtyard by appealing to Lin Longyue through a flower arrangement representing resilience in winter. Explaining that Zhao Yong’s medicine tests endangered his life, he persuaded her that his literary, artistic, and martial potential could serve her ambitions. His attempt to obtain the same protection for Liu Changle failed. 5

Jiang Yuan later examined Chen Lingxi’s bones and found that, despite signs of hunger and strain, his spine, limbs, blood-qi channels, and inner vitality possessed extraordinary resilience. Jiang Yuan took him on to cultivate Mountain-Crushing Force, while Lin Longyue transferred his slave registration to the Baosu Marquis Residence and supplied him with food, silver, medicinal baths, and martial resources. 13

Chen Lingxi outwardly pledged his life to Lin Longyue, but privately recognized that becoming useful to the marquis residence would likely make freedom even harder to obtain. 13

Despite comparisons with the reborn Truth-Seekers, Chen Lingxi is a native cultivator of Weiji Grotto-Heaven rather than one of their number. Emperor Daye confirms his native origins through the Mirror-Listening Cauldron, and the Immortal Ranking publicly records his origin as Weiji Grotto-Heaven. 174 204 206

Chen Lingxi is initially described as thin and somewhat pale, though his complexion gains a warm jade-like luster after cultivation. His refined features retain a persistent melancholy between the brows. 13

Chen Lingxi is patient, observant, and intensely self-directed. As an official slave, he learns to maintain respectful manners while hiding his real thoughts, cultivation, and ambitions from those with power over him. 13 28

He treats cultivation as his path out of confinement. He continuously analyzes the mechanisms, costs, and limits of his abilities rather than relying on them blindly, including experimenting with Dragon-Drawing Powder despite its poison and investigating the formations hidden in his possessions. 20 26 58

He can be ruthless toward enemies and obstacles, killing Wang Kong after extracting information about Dragon-Drawing Powder and later slaughtering hostile cultivators and military forces when threatened. 25 164 166 However, he also protects those with whom he forms genuine bonds, saving Lin Suri from three Eighth Floor cultivators and allowing Lin Longyue time to escape after confronting Ying Ju’s heir. 160 136

His desire for survival develops into a resilient Dao heart. Even after learning that the Cave Heaven and its inhabitants are destined for destruction, he refuses to abandon the possibility of finding a path forward through cultivation. 131

Although initially willing to use Lin Suri for his own survival, Chen Lingxi becomes ashamed of the disparity between his own calculations and Lin Suri’s sincerity. He voluntarily reveals that he is a native of the Cave Heaven because he does not wish to betray his friend’s goodwill. 160 196

His ruthlessness does not exclude concern for ordinary people. After killing Demon Lord Zhang and corrupt generals, he spares two young commanders and orders them to restore order and distribute food in Qiu Zhu Prefecture. As an official slave, Chen Lingxi gains the Divine Chamber, spies on Lin Suri’s cultivation, and secretly enters both martial and qi cultivation. Jiang Yuan’s discovery of his talent raises his standing within the western courtyard, but Chen Lingxi remains wary of the residence’s attempts to turn him into a useful death warrior. 3 13

His initial survival depends on persuading Lin Longyue to recognize his usefulness as a flower arranger and potential martial artist. Unable to obtain protection for Liu Changle as well, he leaves his absent friend the words “Live on” written in incense ashes. 5

Escape from Servitude

Chen Lingxi uses Lin Longyue’s favor to protect himself from Zhao Yong while concealing his true cultivation. He kills Wang Kong, exploits Dragon-Drawing Powder to improve his abilities, and begins acting beyond the limits of a household servant. 25 26 29

Lin Longyue eventually grants him access to the library’s first three floors, two monthly trips outside the residence, a thirty-tael allowance, and a promise of improved household status. Chen Lingxi recognizes the conditional nature of these privileges and remains determined to escape both the residence and the Capital Circuit. 29

He later steals the Demon Banner from the residence, kills the old servant guarding it, defeats Zhao Qinglou and the other retainers, and escapes with the banner and its accompanying black mist. 109

Ancestral Mountain

In Ancestral Mountain, Chen Lingxi competes with Truth-Seekers and court-aligned cultivators for spiritual opportunities. He works alongside Lin Suri, refines a second strand of Ancestral Mountain Mother Qi, reaches Qi Circulation Eighth Floor, and leaves the mountain with major treasures and enemies. 116 130 133

His gains also include Sword-Edge Qi and the opportunity to test the Life-Devouring Method. The Mother Qi’s transformation of his foundation supports his later ability to contend with cultivators above his realm. 120 121 156

War Against the Crown Prince

Chen Lingxi clashes with Ying Chi’s faction, destroys the Crown Prince’s spirit-light incarnation, kills Luo Ran, and ultimately overcomes Ying Chi himself. After defeating the Crown Prince, he takes him to a cave in the Nanju Twelve Mountains, questions him about his origins and allies, and kills him. 105 142 149

Slaying-Force Cauldron Conflict

After gaining the Enemy-Slaying Spirit Jade, Chen Lingxi dominates battles against the imperial court’s forces. He kills Wu Mohe, Emperor Bow Earl, the three Heavenly Boat women, Marquis Fengshan, and Qi Lian, while Emperor Daye and other major powers begin treating him as a significant threat. 164 165 172 174

A temporary spiritual-light blessing from the mysterious man associated with the Black Banner greatly raises the quality of his spiritual qi and his comprehension without immediately changing his actual realm. Chen Lingxi uses the opportunity to kill powerful enemies and deepen his mastery of several techniques. 162 163 164 178

Immortal Ranking and Dao Foundation

Chen Lingxi enters the Immortal Ranking by killing Wang Zhi'an, then uses its spiritual opportunities to strengthen his Dao Seed. He forms a Dragon-Stripping Dao Platform, cultivates Thunder-Prison Heaven, defeats Immortal Ranking opponents, and achieves Dao Foundation. 206 221 223 236

Before forming his Dao Platform, he kills Bai Huzhong to rise to thirty-second place, but finds himself unable to match the nineteenth-ranked Bai Qingchuan and escapes rather than prolong the battle. 211

After reaching Dao Foundation, he defeats Bai Lingze’s incarnation on Ancestral Mountain with Thunder-Prison Heaven and the Immortal-Execution Thunder Pool. Bai Lingze sacrifices the incarnation’s remaining Dao Origin to escape. 241

Complete Cauldron Vessel Struggle

As the struggle over the complete Cauldron Vessel and the Weiji Grotto-Heaven intensifies, Chen Lingxi obtains the Immortal Husk, creates a clone as a survival measure, and refines his Profound Root until its transformation makes him strong enough to drive off Bai Lingze’s incarnation. 251 257 260

He also negotiates a binding agreement with Emperor Daye and uses Luo Yuan River Water to activate the Volcano, Storm, Lake, and Ancestral Mountain Immortal Pivots. Their combined resonance pierces the void, raising the possibility of Great Sage Luo Yuan’s true body descending. 249

Before the final crisis, Chen Lingxi retrieves another Dao-Seizing Fruit and visits Liu Changle at Mystic Wonder Abbey. Changle describes visions of calamity and an all-consuming Long River, then entrusts Sun-Watching Peak to him. During the upheaval surrounding Great Sage Luo Yuan’s incarnation, Chen Lingxi hears Changle call his name and sees his familiar reflection within its waters. 256 264

Great Xuanzhuo Realm and Sun-Watching Peak

Chen Lingxi reaches the Great Xuanzhuo Realm after attaining third place on the Weiji Grotto-Heaven Immortal Ranking. Two years of seclusion, supported by the Immortal Husk and the ranking’s spiritual opportunity, bring him to the Profound Root Wondrous Fruit Realm. He discovers that ordinary Dao Foundation Early Stage cultivators in the wider world exert far less pressure on him than the powerful projected incarnations he fought in Weiji. 264 269 271 272

At Sun-Awakening Upper Peak, he secretly collects a trace of the Sun Cauldron Vessel’s aura and accepts the Yangjue Peak Master’s appointment as chief disciple. Despite warnings that Blazing Bell Upper Peak may trouble Sun-Watching Peak, he chooses to remain there temporarily. Wary that his secrets and past conflicts make the Dragon-Offering Sect unsafe, he intends to leave after settling Sun-Watching Peak’s disciples. 275

Deer-Sleeping Peak and the Dragon Palace Prince

Chen Lingxi discovers that Fate-Evolving Purple Radiance has constructed a false personal history for him, replacing his memories of Weiji with an account in which he was Changle’s junior brother at Sun-Watching Peak, was rescued by Shen Xiu'an, and became True Person Xiang Shu’s disciple. Although he identifies the fabrication, Yuan Lingyu’s genuine affection complicates his understanding of the situation. 279

When Mystic Light selects him to meet visiting Great Luo Heavenly Immortals, the Dragon Palace prince chooses him as an Entwined-Dragon Servitor. Xiang Shu objects, claiming Chen Lingxi as his disciple and intended inheritor of the dragon molt. Chen Lingxi resists the prince’s inducements with the aid of the Heaven-Inviting Great Sage’s power and departs carrying Dragon Origin for study. 286

Heavenly-Law Edict and Lord Xiuyun

After testing himself against the Heaven-Grown Jade’s guardian and studying the Yi Turtle’s carapace, Chen Lingxi approaches mastery of the Heavenly-Law Edict. A visit to Southern Luminary Peak in search of a pill formula leads to an encounter with Qi Chuan, who recognizes him as his little martial uncle. 303

Lord Xiuyun subsequently attacks him at Qi Chuan’s request. Her Dao Foundation Middle Stage reserves, complementary Sea Within Qi and Heaven-Illuminating divine abilities, and three fourth-grade Spirit Artifacts initially overwhelm him. Chen Lingxi uses the Heavenly-Law Edict to cut off heavenly light, disabling Heaven-Illuminating, then kills her with empowered Jade Tiger Sea-Reversing Sword Light. He later acknowledges that without the edict, he could not have defeated her. 307 308

By Chapter 315, Chen Lingxi has reached Dao Foundation Middle Stage, but remains conscious of the much larger gap separating him from late-stage cultivators.
