Background

Xiao Yan and Xiao Le are twin sons of Xiao Zhan. Once celebrated with Xiao Le as the Jia Ma Twin Stars, Xiao Yan became a target of mockery after his Dou Qi fell to the Third Stage. Unlike his earlier lazy and unruly manner, the decline leaves him visibly unwilling to accept his fate. Xiao Le remains beside him, while Xiao Xun'er comforts him by taking his hand 1.

When Nalan Yanran and the Misty Cloud Sect arrive to dissolve her engagement to him, Xiao Yan refuses their terms and their offered Qi Gathering Powder. Humiliated by the public dismissal, he accepts Nalan Yanran’s three-year challenge, issues a letter of repudiation, and vows to climb Misty Cloud Mountain to reclaim his family’s dignity 3 4.

Xiao Yan’s cultivation resumes after he gains Medicine Elder as a teacher. Medicine Elder subsequently accepts both twins for training, giving Xiao Yan the guidance and resources to rebuild his cultivation and pursue alchemy 5 6.
