Origin

Nuwa created the Human Race at Mount Buzhou after Fuxi advised her to mix a drop of her natal essence blood into the clay. The resulting humans possessed high intelligence and innate Dao bodies, immediately recognizing Nuwa as their mother 88.

Nuwa subsequently used the Gourd Vine to create humans on a far larger scale. These later humans initially possessed no cultivation, but the Primordial World recognized them as a new race because of their innate Dao bodies and rapidly growing numbers 89.

Nuwa swore an oath to the Great Dao to formally name the race “Human.” The Great Dao granted 80% of the creation merit to Nuwa and 20% to the newborn Human Race; Nuwa then gave half of her own share to her children, allowing the race to begin cultivating in earnest 90.

The Human Race's recognition of Nuwa as Holy Mother formed a Wheel of Fortune behind her. Chen Xuan later entrusted Nuwa with the Kongtong Seal, an innate supreme treasure used to suppress and stabilize Human Race destiny 90 91.

Innate Traits

• Innate Dao bodies — Humans are naturally suited to cultivation and were born with unusually favorable fortune. However, their bodies were not tempered through tribulation from birth, leaving them vulnerable to illness and physical danger 88 89 169.
• Wisdom and innovation — Their defining strength is wisdom rather than raw physical or innate combat power. They plan for the long term, domesticate demon beasts, develop practical tools, and create new systems of knowledge 99 169.
• Rapid spiritual adaptation — Human ghosts can recover self-awareness and memories after death, allowing them to grow quickly within the Ghost Race 98.
• Fortune and faith — Human Race fortune can empower the Human Emperor, while collective faith can be gathered through Yu King's Nine Tripods into a renewable force distinct from ordinary merit or racial fortune 392 393.
• Human-Witch descendants — Intermarriage with the Witch Race produced stronger descendants. Human offspring could inherit Witch Race physical strength, while Witch offspring could gain the ability to use magical treasures 97.

Society and Institutions

• Human Teaching — Founded by Nuwa to protect the Human Race's fortune and transmit the Dao. Fuxi served as its vice leader and Sacred Teacher 91 92 169.
• Fire Cloud Cave — Established as the Human Race's ancestral court and later became the center of its trials, sages, and sovereigns 95 169.
• Human Race Sacred Halls — Founded by Fuxi in major tribes to identify those suited to cultivation. Candidates who reached Earth Immortal later traveled to Fire Cloud Cave for final trials 169.
• Human Race ancestral trials — After the first calamity, humans were expected to undergo a Fire Cloud Cave trial at age eighteen; successful candidates earned their tribe's support and the opportunity to cultivate 169.
• Human Sage Investiture List — A list condensed from Human Race providence to reward heroic spirits and meritorious individuals with providence-golden bodies, rather than binding them through the Investiture of the Gods List 376.
• Human Race Divine Court — Di Xin later established a new divine court and suppressed Human Race fortune at Fire Cloud Cave, while leaving mortal rulers responsible for building new dynasties 470.

Development

Early ingenuity

Human tribes distinguished themselves by raising and breeding intelligent demon beasts as mounts, protectors, and livestock. Their long-term planning impressed Laozi, who considered their wisdom greater than that of the Demon, Witch, and ancient three clans 99.

After the first calamity, Chen Xuan began teaching practical knowledge rather than immediately providing higher methods. He introduced the use of fire through the Firelight Tribe, where Suiren became the first human to create fire and received a merit treasure refined from the flame and suiren wood 169 170.

Yan Zi's bark rope became the Immortal-Binding Rope after receiving merit, and many other human inventors were similarly rewarded. This revealed the Human Race's creative potential, but also encouraged some people to pursue trivial inventions purely for unearned cultivation gains 170 177.

Governance and culture

Fuxi became chief of the Hua Xu Tribe and introduced a council of elders and capable members to jointly decide major affairs. He created a calendar, promoted handicrafts and trade, and used knotted cords to preserve important records 214.

By studying the River Chart and Luo Writing, Fuxi created the Eight Trigrams, advancing humanity's understanding of the laws governing heaven, earth, and all things. The tribes later elected him common lord of the Human Race 214 216.

Cangjie resolved the limitations of knotted cords by creating writing for the Human Race. The spread of writing brought Human Race development to another peak and strengthened Fuxi's position as common sovereign 215 216.

Major Calamities and Conflicts

First Great Calamity

The Demon Race discovered that devouring Human Race souls increased cultivation and that those souls could be forged into weapons capable of harming the Witch Race. Eastern Emperor Taiyi approved the collection of human souls for the Witch-Slaying Sword, beginning the Human Race's first great calamity 164.

Demon kings and soldiers openly massacred human tribes. Fuxi initially drove the attackers back, but Kunpeng restrained him while the Ten Great Demon Commanders resumed the slaughter 164.

The Human Race's nearly ten billion scattered members were reduced to fewer than one hundred million survivors. Suiren swore a Great Dao oath that the Human and Demon Races would fight until one side was dead 168.

Self-reliance and rejection of Heavenly Dao handouts

The race's dependence on protectors and Heavenly Dao merit left it unprepared for disaster. Nuwa publicly exposed Great Luo cultivators who had received merit for trivial acts, contrasting them with Suiren's genuinely beneficial invention of fire 166 179.

Humans tore down Heavenly Dao Temples and severed the fortune they had been supplying to the Heavenly Dao. Hongjun responded by sending heavenly tribulation against the tribes, but Azure Lotus Island disciples and the Three Pure Ones protected them 179.

The Human Race later renounced its unearned Great Luo cultivation and chose the martial path. Nuwa granted the Yellow-Center Plum to extend their lifespans while they pursued genuine cultivation 182.

War with Chiyou

Chiyou, chieftain of the Jiuli Tribe, awakened a Great Sorcerer bloodline while retaining a Human Race primordial spirit. He challenged Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan's rule with support from Witch Race Great Sorcerers 220.

Human Teaching disciples used the Heavenly Star-Dipper Grand Formation to break Chiyou's Twelve Capitals Divine Fiend Formation. Chiyou was ultimately expelled from the Human Race and assigned to the Nine Netherworld as one of its Five Ghost Emperors 227 229.

Investiture of the Gods Calamity

The Investiture of the Gods Calamity was framed as the Human Race's final self-born trial and a struggle over Human Race fortune. Chen Xuan supported the Human Emperor's orthodox lineage rather than Xiqi 256.

Di Xin cultivated the Human Sovereign Scripture, a technique that refines Human Race fortune instead of spiritual qi and remains undetectable to the Heavenly Dao. The technique was created by Fuxi specifically for a Human Sovereign 277.

During the conflict with the Demon Race, Di Xin temporarily reached the Saint realm by burning his lifespan and Great Shang's national fortune. The Human Race then offered faith to sustain him, allowing Yu King's Nine Tripods to channel their collective power 392 393.

Human Path

The Human Race's fortune rose further when Di Xin permitted Demon Race members to enter human society and accumulate merit, provided they harbored no hostile intent. This offered a means to settle the ancient blood feud while preserving humanity's right to kill any demon acting maliciously 467.

Bi Gan then used the Human Sage Investiture List to invest 365 Orthodox Gods, creating divine positions for every profession and trade within the Human Race. The ceremony awakened the Human Path and produced thirty-six Human Path Saints, including the Three Human Ancestors and numerous historical sages 467.

Nuwa became spokesperson of the Human Path and reached the first level of the Dao Union Realm. Di Xin became ruler of the human realm, second only to Nuwa, while Great Shang became humanity's sacred dynasty rather than a merely mortal kingdom 467.
