Background / History

Pangu created the Primordial World by cleaving open Chaos. As his strength failed, his breath became wind and clouds, his voice became thunder, his eyes became the sun and moon, and his body became the world's poles and sacred mountains. Before fading, he entrusted Chen Xuan—his fellow offspring of the Creation Green Lotus—with protecting the world he had made 1.

The Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans were the first living beings born from the world's origin. They initially governed the waters, skies, and earth respectively, but their harmony was broken by surviving Chaos Gods and Demons. Their eventual withdrawal after the Dragon-Han Calamity ended the conflict, dispersed the world's baleful aura, and restored its spiritual veins and innate spiritual roots through heavenly merit 1 14.

Although the Nine Netherworld later made heaven and earth structurally complete, Chen Xuan maintained that the Primordial World would be truly complete only when all Six Paths had awakened 111 135. Its fragility remained a major concern: the restored Pangu Axe could split the world apart with even a minor movement, making the awakening of all Six Paths a prerequisite for its safe return 137.

Structure and Realms

• Chaos boundary — The Primordial World is separated from Chaos by a barrier. Mount Buzhou's summit was the sole known route for cultivators to cross into Chaos, while entering Chaos below the Great Luo Golden Immortal realm is effectively fatal 34 138.
• Thirty-Six Heavens — The lower Thirty-Two Heavens belonged to the Demon Race, while the Thirty-Third through Thirty-Fifth Heavens became the domains of the Three Pure Ones. The Thirty-Sixth Heaven, Great Luo Heaven, became Chen Xuan's cultivation ground 108.
• Nine Netherworld — Established beneath the earth alongside the Six Paths of Reincarnation. It receives souls, administers rebirth, contains the eighteen levels of hell, and is guarded in part by Witch Race ghost soldiers and underworld troops 135.
• East Sea sanctuaries — Azure Lotus Island serves as Chen Xuan's Daoist sanctuary, sustained by seven jade dragon pillars linked to East Sea spiritual veins. The Three Immortal Islands Overseas were later connected to it, increasing its territory and spiritual-qi density 19 196.

Natural Order

Reincarnation

Houtu created the Six Paths of Reincarnation because souls previously had nowhere to return and were forced to devour one another. Rebirth through the Paths of Celestial Gods, Humans, Asuras, Hell, Hungry Ghosts, and Beasts is determined by a being's accumulated merit and karmic burden 130.

The later Book of Life and Death gave the Nine Netherworld authority over the lifespans of all beings below the Quasi-Sage realm. Great Luo Golden Immortals received a maximum lifespan of 490,000 years, and the Five Ghost Emperors began seizing the souls of cultivators who had gained their realms through trickery 178.

Merit, Karma, and Fortune

• Merit is bestowed for actions that benefit the world, including ending calamities, creating races, establishing reincarnation, and restoring the heavens 14 130 196.
• Karma restricts the Three Clans after the Dragon-Han Calamity; their descendants cannot exceed the peak Taiyi Golden Immortal realm unless their karmic burden is cleansed with immense merit 14.
• Fortune can support races, sects, and paths. The Human Race's fortune enabled Nuwa to reach the Dao Union Realm upon becoming spokesperson of the Human Path 467.

Major Calamities and Threats

• Dragon-Han Calamity — The conflict among the Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans ended with all three withdrawing from the struggle for dominance, leaving their inheritances diminished and karmically burdened 14.
• Witch-Demon Calamity — The conflict devastated the world before the Witch Race retreated into the Nine Netherworld and the Demon Race declined. Merit later descended upon those who restored the aftermath 195 196.
• Ten Suns disaster — Ten Golden Crows entered the world and scorched countless living beings to ashes before Da Yi shot down nine of them 186.
• Investiture of the Gods Calamity — Began as a struggle over Human Race fortune but showed signs of evolving into an Immeasurable Calamity as multiple factions entered the war 256 404.
• Chaos God incursions — Surviving Chaos Gods and Demons remained a threat from beyond the world. Hongjun later brought Calamity and Destruction into the Primordial World, forcing Chen Xuan to defend it while preventing their battle from damaging the land 134 462.

Relationships

• Pangu — Creator; entrusted Chen Xuan with protecting the world after opening the heavens 1.
• Chen Xuan / Green Lotus Daoist — Principal protector who seeks the full awakening of the Six Paths and repeatedly safeguards the world's stability 5 111 137.
• Houtu — Completed the world's reincarnation system by becoming the Six Paths of Reincarnation and ruling the Nine Netherworld as Lady Pingxin 130 135.
• Hongjun — Spokesperson of the Heavenly Dao whose plans seek to preserve Heavenly Path dominance and restrain or manipulate the other paths 111 468.
• Three Pure Ones — Pangu's descendants and Chen Xuan's disciples; charged with establishing the Dao Sect to guide the world's living beings 31 146.
