Background / History

Team Minato and Kannabi Bridge

Obito begins as a warmhearted young ninja close to Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara. His repeated lateness comes from helping strangers and injured animals rather than neglecting his friends. He calls the three of them Konoha’s “strongest iron triangle” 8.

As Minato’s disciple, he regularly spars with Kakashi and members of Hyuga Yuto’s Team Nine. Kakashi teases him for not having awakened the Sharingan, while Obito treats the younger Shisui with boisterous familiarity 152.

During the rescue of Rin at Kannabi Bridge, a cave collapse crushes the right half of Obito’s body. Believing himself beyond saving, he asks Rin to transplant his left Sharingan into Kakashi as a belated jōnin promotion gift. He also reassures Kakashi that both he and his father are outstanding ninja, regardless of the village’s judgment 156.

White Zetsu retrieves Obito through a prepared underground passage and takes him to Madara. Yuto watches the rescue without intervening because following Obito allows him to locate Madara’s hideout. Zetsu begins reconstructing Obito’s body while Yuto battles Madara’s forces 156 158.

Madara’s Successor and the Nine-Tails Attack

Madara considers Obito an ideal pawn because his capacity for love can become equally powerful hatred. By the time Madara arranges the inheritance of his plans, Obito and Zetsu have already departed to carry on his will 164 180.

Rin’s death becomes the center of Obito’s rejection of the world. He pursues the Eye of the Moon Plan to create a world in which she exists, accepting increasingly destructive methods to achieve it 206 213 254.

Obito controls the Nine-Tails during the attack on Konoha and attacks Minato and the pregnant Kushina. Minato’s death is ultimately attributed to Hyuga Yuto, not Obito, while Kushina survives with half of the Nine-Tails sealed inside her and the other half inside Naruto 205 206 207 217.

After Yuto’s identity as the Moon God is exposed, Obito realizes that Yuto has manipulated him. He develops an obsession with the Byakugan, controls Fifth Mizukage Hozuki Mangetsu through dōjutsu, and imposes the brutal policies that turn Hidden Mist into the “Blood Mist Village” 246.

Exposure and the Cemetery Ambush

Four years after the Nine-Tails attack, Obito assaults Shisui and Mochizuki Ruri at sea to obtain information about Yuto. Their coordinated attacks force him to use Izanagi, but Yuto arrives before he can finish them. Obito then seeks a private agreement concerning Yuto’s Rinnegan 202 203.

Yuto reveals Obito’s identity to Konoha, intending to use the village against him. Kakashi’s left eye becomes the bait: its Kamui confirms Obito’s identity and gives Konoha a means of confronting his space-time ability 205 206.

At Kakashi’s staged funeral, Obito opens the coffin to reclaim the eye. A photograph of Team Minato makes him hesitate, allowing Kakashi to strike him with a Rasengan. Orochimaru interrupts his attempted escape with a chakra-disrupting bite 209 210.

Rather than retreat, Obito transplants a Rinnegan and summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, sacrificing his life force to attack Konoha. Tsunade’s punch, empowered by Yuto’s planted eye technique, devastates his body. Orochimaru captures him and removes both his right Mangekyō and left Rinnegan 213 214 215.

Imprisonment and Rescue

Imprisoned with empty eye sockets and a broken spine, Obito refuses to explain himself to Kakashi or repent. Although his behavior appears increasingly deranged, Orochimaru notices that he is still memorizing details of his surroundings 217 221.

Konoha appoints Kakashi as his executioner and uses the execution to lure out his allies. Zetsu and Hozuki Mangetsu disrupt the operation, with the Three-Tails tying down Hiruzen and Orochimaru. Zetsu shields Obito from Shisui and escapes with him despite catastrophic injuries from explosive tags 221 224.

Additional Hashirama Cells keep Obito alive, but restoring his combat strength requires further surgery. During the escape, he approaches Jiraiya and exploits the latter’s disability and resentment by arguing that Konoha possesses the means to heal him but has withheld them 224 225.

Phantom Organization and Reincarnation

Over the following two years, the Phantom Organization gains Sasori, Hidan, and the Five-Tails. Obito nevertheless remains severely weakened: transplanted Sharingan cannot replace his own abilities, and his damaged body has lost at least ninety percent of its strength 254.

After repeatedly failing to perform Impure World Reincarnation himself, Obito proposes a plan to an unidentified collaborator. He accepts being killed so that substituted remains can trick Orochimaru into resurrecting him instead of Minato 254 255.

The ensuing Konoha invasion uses a masked decoy, the Five-Tails, and bionic beast soldiers to conceal its real objective. Resurrected with Kamui restored, Obito breaks Orochimaru’s control, ambushes Fugaku, and uses Sasuke and explosive tags to reclaim his right eye. Fugaku dies, and Sasuke awakens his Sharingan 252 255 256.

Obito avoids another direct confrontation with Orochimaru, destroys the Hokage Building, and steals the Rinnegan stored there. Although Yuto takes the Five-Tails, Obito considers his recovery a success. His return and pursuit of the tailed beasts become an international threat alongside Yuto’s Akatsuki 256 257 259.

Appearance

  • As a boy: Dark eyes, sunglasses, and a bright smile; often arrives sweating after helping people on the way 8.
  • Kannabi injuries: The right half of his body is crushed, and his left eye is removed for Kakashi’s transplant 156.
  • Masked identity: Wears a one-eyed mask exposing his right Sharingan 179 202.
  • After the cemetery battle: Empty eye sockets, a broken spine, and extensive wounds; the attempted rescue adds severe burns and damage to his skull and chest 215 221 224.
  • Impure World form: His face resembles a cracked mud wall, and his right Mangekyō reappears with the reconstructed body 255.

Personality

Early Obito is compassionate, openly affectionate toward his friends, and easily provoked by Kakashi’s teasing. Even while mortally injured, he smiles, comforts Rin, and offers Kakashi both his eye and recognition that the village has denied him 8 152 156.

After Rin’s death, that attachment becomes an obsession. He treats the existing world as false, dismisses the suffering caused by the Nine-Tails attack, and refuses to regard himself as a criminal. His willingness to spend his own life extends to cruelty toward former comrades and children 213 217 221 254 255.

His instability does not eliminate his tactical intelligence. He studies his prison while ranting, manipulates Jiraiya’s grievances, and eventually learns to withdraw rather than repeat his failed confrontation with Orochimaru. Memories of Team Minato still affect him strongly enough to expose an opening during the cemetery ambush 209 217 225 256.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

  • Intangibility: Shifts the relevant portions of his real body into the Kamui Dimension, allowing physical attacks to pass through his apparent body 202 210.
  • Spatial transfer: Draws himself, other people, and objects entirely into the alternate dimension 210.
  • Mobility and storage: Uses spatial vortices to reposition, escape, and retrieve weapons stored in Kamui space 202 256.
  • Attack limitation: Cannot physically strike an opponent while remaining intangible; Shisui and Ruri exploit the moments when he attacks 202.
  • Escape limitation: Full-body transfer is slower than ordinary intangibility. Orochimaru exploits that delay to interrupt his escape 210.
  • Chakra disruption: Orochimaru’s Cursed Seal prevents him from maintaining Kamui during the ambush 210.

Sharingan, Genjutsu, and Izanagi

  • Controls the Nine-Tails and Fifth Mizukage Hozuki Mangetsu through ocular power 205 206 246.
  • Uses Izanagi to reverse injuries inflicted by Shisui and Ruri, closing the expendable Sharingan hidden behind his mask afterward 202.
  • Inherits spare Sharingan collected by Madara, providing replacements for sacrificial use 202.
  • Uses transplanted clansmen’s Sharingan after losing his own eyes, but remains drastically weaker than before 253 254.

Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

  • Summons the Demonic Statue with a single transplanted Rinnegan 213 214.
  • Allows its black rods to pierce his body and drain his life force when his chakra is exhausted 213.
  • Suffers rapid physical wasting from the process; the statue’s available power decreases after Tsunade destroys much of his body 213 215.

Hashirama Cell Augmentation

  • Survives the destruction of half his body and later regains the ability to move and fight 225.
  • Possesses enough additional vitality to fuel the Demonic Statue after exhausting his chakra 213.
  • Survives further catastrophic injuries through emergency cell transplantation, though this does not immediately restore combat strength 224 225.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Cannot successfully cast the technique himself despite preparing its hand signs, materials, and a dead subject 254.
  • Uses his own death and substituted remains to make Orochimaru resurrect him 254 255.
  • Performs the release sequence quickly enough to escape Orochimaru’s control 255.
  • Regains his right Mangekyō through the reanimated body, but still treats Orochimaru’s potential soul-sealing attack as dangerous 255 256.

Combat and Strategy

  • Uses the Great Fireball Technique, swords, shuriken, kunai, and explosive tags 152 202 256.
  • Develops bionic beast soldiers from Five-Tails chakra and Hashirama Cells. Their limited intelligence and self-destructive capabilities make them expendable distractions rather than a reliable means of reclaiming his eyes 252.
  • Exploits emotional vulnerabilities, including Jiraiya’s resentment and Fugaku’s determination to protect Sasuke 225 255.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — Teammate and the central object of his love. Her death drives his rejection of the world and willingness to risk everything for the Eye of the Moon Plan 8 206 213 254.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Friend, rival, and recipient of his left Sharingan; later his opponent and appointed executioner. Kakashi continues to show compassion despite Obito’s threats 152 156 210 217 221.
  • Minato Namikaze — Teacher whose team Obito once cherished; later a target of the Nine-Tails attack 152 209 206.
  • Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, manipulator, and predecessor. Selects Obito as a pawn and leaves him to inherit his will 158 164 180.
  • Zetsu — Companion and repeated rescuer. Reconstructs his body, shields him in battle, and protests his decision to entrust his death-and-revival plan to an outsider 158 213 224 254.
  • Hyuga Yuto / Moon God — Manipulator, uneasy negotiating partner, and rival for the tailed beasts. Exposes Obito to Konoha and later takes the Five-Tails from his invasion 156 203 205 246 257.
  • Shisui Uchiha and Mochizuki Ruri — Former sparring acquaintances who become opponents. Their teamwork forces him to expend Izanagi 152 202.
  • Orochimaru — Principal opponent in Konoha. Captures and blinds him, then is tricked into restoring him through Impure World Reincarnation 215 255.
  • Uchiha Fugaku and Sasuke — Fugaku helps Konoha capture him and receives his right eye. Obito later exploits Sasuke to reclaim that eye, causing Fugaku’s death 206 255 256.
  • Jiraiya — Target of psychological manipulation during Obito’s escape; later associated with the Phantom Organization despite retaining loyalty to Konoha 225 254.
